TRADITION, PRODUCTS, & PIZZA
The story DiCarlo’s Pizza can be told based on these three words, which has captured the heart of the family’s philosophy for over 100 years.
In the early 1900’s, Michael DiCarlo owned & operated an Italian grocery store in Steubenville, Ohio and later extended his endeavors into the bakery business. What today is known as Original DiCarlo’s Famous Bread, which is still sold in many areas of the Ohio Valley. Michael, who had immigrated from Sora, Italy along with his six children ran all facets of the business enterprises.
Returning home to Steubenville from serving in World War II, Michael’s oldest son Primo described a dish that was popular in Italy. It was a delicacy consisting of crispy bread covered with sauce and cheese and it had been sold in many of the Italian cafes. His ingenious idea would eventually lead to the grand opening of the very first DiCarlo’s Original Pizza shop located on 146 South 3rd Street in Steubenville around 1945.
