Specialties
The Children’s Museum of Richmond is a non-profit organization that exists to inspire all children by appealing to their natural capacity for curiosity, exploration and learning.
Everything in the museum is hands-on and self-guided for children up to age 8. There is an art studio where children can create anything and everything. Little Farm is a special area exclusively for babies and toddlers 3 and under. The Backyard features sand and water play in the summer and snow in the winter. Town Square allows children the ultimate in imaginative play with a TV Studio, grocery store, café, car garage, hospital, and bank.
History
Established in 1981.
In 1981, the Museum opened to the public with its première exhibit, Boxes, Blocks, and Blueprints. For the next 18 years, CMoR welcomed children in to its small but heroic 8,100 square foot building. Then, in the year 2000, the Children’s Museum of Richmond opened its new 44,000 square foot facility on West Broad Street!
Since then, the museum has gone through many changes. Most recently the new exhibit Town Square opened in Fall of 2008 and Little Farm opened June 2009.
