Meh. The Americano wasn’t hot, by the time I walked to my car two blocks away it was lukewarm. It was also very bitter, now this could be due to the fact that it was decaf, but it just wasn’t good. But the real reason I won’t be back and I will not recommend it to a friend is because the owner(I’m assuming) hates his job. The customer service experience was awful. It was clear he wasn’t happy from the moment I walked in. I was hoping the nice lady would help me, but no such luck. They were out of half and half. I told him, he said, dismissively ‘Thank you, have a nice day’. Uh, no, guy, I need half and half. I simply, nicely repeated myself. He replied ‘give me a minute!’. Whoa. He took someone’s order and then handed me a carton. Cool. I made my drink and then offered it back since the insulated dispenser would need to be filled. He saw me coming and waved me away with ‘just leave it over there!’. Ok, man. Whew. Relax.

Great spot for a cup of coffee in the Church Hill neighborhood! In particular, I’m a huge fan of the Church Hill blend brew they have everyday. Perfect amount of hazelnut and cinnamon flavor is welcome to a hazelnut cup of joe fan. I’ve tried a few different foods they have available and find them to standard fare that isn’t very unique from other nearby options and also hasn’t impressed me. The in house roasted coffee on the other hand is great and the reason I keep coming back. In addition to a great environment to study and pass the day, a free refill also makes it even better. I gave this 3 stars for having great coffee, but the attempt at trying to cater to all types of food availability and offering mediocre selection stopped me from giving a better rating. The customer service can be patchy at times, sometimes amazing and the other times quite lackluster.

Great coffee decent food. Coffee ice cubes in frozen drinks and that is very very cool in my book.

Found this place when I helped a friend move. Went in for a cup of coffee and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of the coffee. The atmosphere was relaxing and felt like I was visiting a friends house. I so enjoyed it that I brought my wife back to try it. We both tried a quiche for breakfast. The crust was light and fluffy and the quiche melted in your mouth. Before we left we got a deviled egg and a couple of scones for later. They were delicious as well. We spoke to the owner and got the back story of how he got started. A friendly staff that really goes the extra mile to make sure you are taken care of. A wonderful way to start your day!

Captain Buzzy’s was one of the reasons we moved to Church Hill 5 years ago. My husband and I enjoyed getting a coffee for a walk with dog, meet friends or get some work done. However this past year the customer service has gone down hill and left us a little disappointed.

best iced coffee in church hill! the church hill blend is sort of hazelnutty and mothbally but irresistibly chocolately. the icecubes in it are also made out of coffee. plus, this place has wi-fi and great employees who go above and beyond. pastries sort of suck. but seriously, best coffee in the neighborhood.

Not too impressed with the $ 5 egg and cheese sandwich, which is literally two pieces of sandwich bread, a clump of egg and a slice of cheese. Also, the Unilocal offer was not honored, apparently it’s buy one get one. They ran out of coffee lids even though they are a coffee shop. Kind of a shame.

Captain Buzzy’ Beanery s is a cool joint in Church Hill. A variety of coffee options and diner-style dishes are made to order. It is a casual place where the staff will make you welcome. It is the perfect pit stop while touring Richmond. Plenty of seating and comfortable couches for enjoying your handmade beverages. They roast coffee on site, so this is the freshest coffee you will find. Try Buzzy’s blend. Or a freshly-squeezed lemonade.

What a lovely place to stop for a breakfast sandwich and a coffee with friends! Certainly a good place for an afternoon coffee or an evening hang out. Their outdoor bench encourages many an evening to be spent with a cup in your hands and a friend at your side.

I love coming here whenever I’m in Church Hill and need a quiet, comfy spot to read or do work. High ceilings and lots of natural light give the place a relaxing, cozy feel. They have a number of smoothies/juices that use fresh fruit — so much better than the mixes from concentrate a lot of other coffee shops in the area use. Their iced coffee is really flavorful and not watered down at all. Prices are okay and staff isn’t the friendliest, but things are fresh here. Ambiance and flavor more than make up for it.

Went here twice recently. The first time, I popped in on the way home from work and just got a scone(didn’t want the caffeine). It was good. The second time, I went in wanting to get a little scoop of ice cream for my pup after a trip to the dog park. It looked like they were having some private event(no sign on the door) but they served me anyway. Good customer service, definitely. My coffee was decent(especially when i went home and put Frangelico in it… shhh). I’ll give three stars for now because nothing was amazing, but I’d go back and give it another shot.

I love Captain Buzzy’s! The Churchhill neighborhood is one of my favorite spots to walk around in Richmond, and Captain Buzzy’s has a great, comfortable vibe. Every time I have been, it’s been pretty quiet and low-key, and service was quick. I enjoy sitting on the couches by the window and catching up with friends, and there are even a selection of board games for those who want to stay around a little longer. I have tried their smoothies and a few of their sweet treats. Both satisfied my cravings, but were not noticeably better than any other coffee shop. Overall, Captain Buzzy’s is a cute Richmond coffee shop – seems like a great place to study! A look around the area is definitely worth it as well – nearby are incredible views of the river and downtown as well as Historic St. John’s Church!

This place is downright cringeworthy. I’m genuinely dumbfounded that anyone has left anything more than 2 stars. I’ve come 4 or 5 times(because the location is convenient), each time thinking«Ehh…I’ll give it one more chance, it can’t be completely horrific every time!» Oh, but it can. I stopped in this morning thinking«Welp, maybe the morning staff isn’t as rude and incompetent as the evening staff!» I ordered an iced latte with a little bit of hazelnut, received a cup of bitter, milk-tinted water. Literally. Why is there water in my latte, lady? So I waited in line again and politely asked for a little bit more hazelnut in my(irreparably repulsive) latte, and the woman who made it literally YELLED at me «YOUTOLDMEONLYTOPUT A LITTLEBITINTHERE.» I do in fact mean yelled, as in customers stopping what they’re doing to turn and look. Awk. And you’re right, I did ask for only a little bit of hazelnut, but I also did NOT ask for a cup of swamp. I feel like I should mention that there is one redeeming quality about their drinks, which is that they use coffee ice cubes in their iced coffee so it doesn’t get watered down. However, I am entirely baffled by this due to the use of actual water in drinks that should contain no water. WHAT? If you’re in Church HIll looking for a good cup of coffee and a pastry go to WPA or Proper Pie. However, if you’re in the neighborhood and have a hankering for an at best off-putting, at worst downright nasty staff and a cup of undrinkable sludge, come on in to Captain Buzzy’s!

Loved this place! The friends I stayed with in Richmond lived just down the street from this comfy coffee shop, so we came here a few times to get our morning caffeine fix. The hot cocoa and pumpkin lattes were so good, and I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. I unfortunately didn’t get to try any of the food, but I’ll be back to do some more exploring!

This place is an easy going good coffee shop. Good wifi, good coffee, good service. Food is okay. Bagel wasn’t super moist. But if you’re hungry and tired this place will set you straight! :)

I’m very grateful to have found this place. I’ve been living downtown for a few months now and for some unknown reason, I always find myself at Starbucks in the Farm fresh grocery store. It’s so small and has no seating so it doesn’t really fit my needs for a place to get some coffee and work on my computer. I love the Church Hill Urban Farmhouse(especially when it’s warm out, that patio is killer) but I always get stumped with the lack of wifi connection there. Captain Buzzy’s is a few blocks up and over from my place and while out doing errands with my fiancé, we stopped in to start our morning off right. They had a check in offer for buy one get one free coffee or lattes. We got one and one and I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Honey Spice latte and OHLORD was it delicious. I’m not a morning person by any means until I’ve had my caffeine fix but with my latte in hand, I was happy as a clam all morning checking things off our to do list. We also ordered a huge slice of quiche to share(we were planning on eating lunch out, we didn’t want to overdo it.) It looked delicious in the cooler case but they microwaved it and I’m sad to report that it was a little soggy/chewy on the edges. The flavor was very nice though regardless of the texture. The girls working here were also super friendly. One girl war making some severe eye contact with me while I was ordering before she asked me how I got my eyelashes so long which was really funny. We chatted about our favorite products and I appreciated that it wasn’t some cookie cutter conversation about the weather or coffee I ordered. The place is pretty huge. It has tons of tables of different sizes and some very comfy looking couches. I will definitely be heading here when I need to get out of my apartment and be productive on my laptop.

A wonderful neighborhood coffee spot, with good strronnngggg coffee to keep you going through the day. Don’t come here expecting the best pastry or snack, head somewhere else near by. But for a good coffee shop experience, head here. The wifi is FAST, the couches are worn in and comfy, the tables exude a sense of home. This is not your artisanal house roasted coffee, but the coffee is good to get you through the day. And unlike most of the coffee places in Churchill/Shockoe, its open for a reasonable amount of time everyday to do some work. Sure it could be Four Barrel or the Mill and serve $ 4 toast with phenomenal coffee, but hey RVA is not SF. This place could still be the lost ‘Central Perk’ of Churchill, and place of gathering and neighborhood. It’s Reminiscent of 90s/2000s TV shows rather than the mass-market Starbucks revolution and the counter-revolution of hipster coffee shops. So sit down with a drink, bring your book, and just drink some damn American coffee with ‘Friends.‘ ALSO, make sure to Check in on Unilocal for 2 for 1 coffee drinks!!! EVERYTIME!
