WOW — What a great find. Typically, not the kind of place that I would stop at while traveling but every now and then for one reason or another, I pull over while traveling and try something totally random — in this case it was Mr. Shake’s, who apparently just opened for business earlier this season, On a Monday night around 7, with a storm very definatley on its way, the place was packed. 20 Cars in the parking lot! It’s apparent the locals have found and love this place. The building is clean and from what I could easily see into the kitchen, it was kept spotless — a good sign for a roadside restaurant — definitely not a greasy spoon kind of ordeal. Service was prompt, professional and friendly. Seems like it was all young girls and thought perhaps they may be lacking — but again, they were on top of their game and functioned as good as any crew of servers twice their age. Good Job girls! I had a Philly Cheese steak with grilled onions and peppers — ummm, it was good. Bread was toasted, meat was moist and the onions and peppers were very good. Might have been able to handle a little more cheese, but it was fine. The sandwich itself was very good and satisfied my hunger, along with the Sweet Potato Fries we shared. I asked for ‘Extra Crispy’ and that’s exactly what I got — not over-cooked the way many places will give them to me when I order them this way(I hate soggy fries). Ellie had a burger that was cooked to perfection and also served on a toasted bun. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and tasted great with the burger. Then in a moment of weakness, we gave into temptation and ordered a single scoop cone of Turkey Hill Hard Ice Cream. I think I counted over 40 flavors being available. The Rocky Road was some of the best I’ve ever had. They also do Soft Serve that seemed to be pretty popular. The prices were great. As a matter of fact, I don’t think they can survive with their current prices — except that they definitely make it up in volume. For example, my ‘Angus Philly Steak Sandwich’ was the most expensive sandwich on the menu at $ 4.75. Ellie’s ¼ lb Cheeseburger was $ 3.09. They have a 13 Fried Shrimp plate for only $ 4.30 — that only $ 0.33 a Shrimp — seriously, you can’t beat that. Word of warning though, when you give in and order an Ice Cream Cone — a Small is actually 2 scoops — if you only want one, be sure to order the Toddler. There is also a brand new Miniature Golf Course that looks like a lot of fun. It’s well lit up and again, the locals sure seem to enjoy it, as there were 3 or 4 groups playing the game who all appeared to be having a wonder summer evening, bonding with one another over a friendly game of Miniature Golf.
