Hibiscus Thai Cuisine

This place serves absolutely delicious Thai food. It is our go-​to take-​out place and dining in is also convenient. It’s the best Thai we’ve had in Reston (though not the best we’ve ever had, hence the ⁴⁄₅).
Protein: The potato curry puffs are a great appetizer. The sauce that comes with it is amazing.

So I had previously been here to get takeout with my friends and I wasn’t impressed with it, it seemed like we paid a premium for some small portions, the prices weren’t justified at all.
I recently went here for lunch on a Friday and I had some high hopes, sadly they were not met. The ambience and décor was nice enough, no problems there. The food was even good as well, their Crispy Duck with Basil was delicious, but the problem was that there wasn’t much of it. When I spend $ 13.95 on something, I expect a good amount of food, and the portions were just so tiny. The duck was so tasty, especially with the crispy skin, but there just wasn’t enough of it, and to make matters worse there was a small scoop of rice. It was tasty but not filling enough, I even had to get an appetizer, the spring rolls, which was decent, but again it was just too small for the price.
The tiny portion wasn’t the only bad thing though, the service could have been a lot better. My coworker had asked for dinner size portions for the fried rice, and instead of him getting it, our other coworker appeared to get it. My other coworker had ordered Pad Thai, yet somehow they made more fried rice and offered it to him; he took it, but only because they said half price, which was a good step. My coworkers were so hungry after the meal, because of the small portions that they ordered another fried rice dish and split it. And to make matters worse, it took the 10 minutes for us to get the check, the people sitting next to us got there after us and left before us, simply baffling.
My one coworker said this would go on his «blacklist» and I have to agree. There’s another Thai place down the street that’s a bit further to go to, but I’d much rather go there because at least the portions were bigger and overall it was better value.
The one takeaway from this review, the food is tasty, but the price might not equate to the price depending on what you get.

Non-​vegetarian friendly, rude service, over-​priced. I’m not usually picky about things but these factors definitely prove i am not going back. Any other thai restaurant is more accommodating.

This was the first time I’ve had thai food. Never tried before. I went on a Friday around lunch time and it was packed, full house. They have many tables and a small bar. I found a place to eat (I was eating by myself) and the girl that greeted me was very nice and friendly.
I ordered shrimp Pad Thai and I have to say, I LOVED it. It was delicious. I will be going back in the future and updating my review, if necessary. Considering how busy they were, service was quick.

I may have found my new lunch spot! I was looking for a new place for lunch, somewhere very close to work. So I decided to come here for lunch at about 1pm.
The place is nice. The décor is colorful and has a fresh vibe to it. It’s in a plaza so plenty of parking.
When I came in, there was only 1 person working. As I was there, few other people came in and the guy got very busy running around. But he was efficient and was handling things well.
I got the chilli basil chicken, asked for mild, it came with rice. The dish was alright. I would give it a ³⁄₅.
Since this place is right by my work, I plan on returning to try the various other items on the menu.

This pineapple fried rice I ordered was so so so good. My husband ordered pad Thai, and that was amazing too. A highlight of the restaurant was the aquarium. My toddler son was fascinated the whole time.

The staff here is so rude. The food is decent, but they just DON’T care. They have total disdain for customers. I gave it a few shots because they owners are friends of friends, but they just suck. Not getting my money. Its too bad really.

Located in a strip mall in with the Big Orange Box anchor. It has a pleasant interior with a saltwater fish display that is worth a look-​see. The service is always polite and attentive. Unlike some other Thai kitchens, this one understands how to handle the hot spice as something to compliment flavors. They use fresh basil, cilantro, and other herbs that enhance the dishes. I’ll skip any seafood dishes that contain calamari because it is rubbery, but otherwise, we like just about everything else they offer.

food ok but the staff is very bad. Chicken entrees are yuck… its very rubbery.

We went to this restaurant this Thursday with a group of 15. The service was bad, the server was very rude. I ordered Yellow curry and it was the worst I ever had, please don’t go to this place. Giving one Star because it won’t let me to review otherwise. I would rate it as zero star and stay away from this place.

I live in Herndon and this is my favorite place within 15 miles to get my Thai fix. I am a connoisseur of Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai, Chicken Satay, and Tom Yum soup. (Yes, everything standard.)
Why is it my favorite?
*Noodles for the drunken noodles are wide but not thick, like many places. I love the wider rice noodles but when they are too thick they can be gummy and sometimes chewy. NOT HERE! They also use fresh diced tomatoes, green beans, and a LOT of Thai Basil.
*A standard order of drunken noodles is medium spicy, and I am an EXTRA spicy kind of person. They are happy to step it up on request.
*We have gotten takeout several times. When we get Pad Thai, we have asked for it to be extra spicy. Not only do they spice the dish when they’re cooking it, but they also gave us a small ToGo ramekin of their super spice mix. AMAZING! We use any leftover to spice homemade endeavors.
*When dining in, they are incredibly quick and efficient. We went in one Thursday evening with 30 minutes before we had to leave for the airport. We shared soup, finished entrees, and paid the check in 25 minutes.
*I LOVE sitting next to the huge aquarium and staring at all of the different fish going about their business.
(Sad note: Closed on Sundays. Terrible. Also, closed between 3 and 5. My middle-​of-​the-​afternoon dining habits take a hit when considering Thai food.)

Arif my friend who works at the place always knows what we want and life. Our choice of soup and wine is always there when we get there. This is an awesome place and wonderful menu. I enjoy the service and spicy food. Great service, good people and excellent location in Reston /​Herndon.

This is probably the best Thai restaurant in Fairfax County. Fresh, richly flavorful, fun atmosphere. The sriracha fried rice blew me away!

After a quick trip to run some errands, a friend and I grab a quick bite of dinner at Hibiscus Thai to satisfy/​quench our hangry-​ness.
A pretty standard thai restaurant at a mildly decent price point. We weren’t too adventurous and just stuck with the basics: split an appetizer of fried (crab?) wontons, followed by our entrees of drunken noodles and pad thai. The usual and expected flavors, nothing bad, nothing amazing. One thing to note, the drunken noodles weren’t spicy (which I appreciated due to my failure of being able to eat anything spicier than pepper), but for those who crave spice, maybe ask to up the spice level if so desired.

mmm.“Spicy and Wild” rocks! So did the appetizers, by the way… we enjoyed our curried fish cakes, which were delicious and crisp, as well as steamed dumplings.
Here’s the secret though, of Hibiscus Thai Cuisine (and why it is my new favorite Thai restaurant): They have special hot sauces. The first time I came here, they didn’t offer these, but on my second visit they were brought out with my Spicy and Wild. This dish wasn’t itself especially spicy, actually, but I dressed it up with the four hot sauces in the little bowls. These ranged from slightly hot (the peppers) to a hotter chili pepper powder, to a very hot arrangement of small green peppers (fully loaded with seeds). This last dressing gave me the exceedingly hot, clear your sinuses thrill that I had been seeking.
Hibiscus Thai Cuisine is a small, well run establishment with nice servers and good food – we’ll be back.
Oh yeah, as far as my five star rating goes, I have indeed been to Thailand many times. Ever wonder why some Unilocalers need to talk smack about others in their reviews? Low self-​esteem is my theory…

Meh. As the 2 star rating for Unilocal says. I strongly suspect that those giving it 5 stars have never set foot in Thailand, or in a an actual 5 star restaurant.
A party of 4, we all ordered appetizers and 2 salads for the couples to share. All of these came to the table at various times for some reason. The Ginger Salad was mediocre, as was the soup that was supposed to be Cilantro free but had about two tablespoons on it as a garnish.
The entrees (Seafood Chili Basil and Seafood Ginger) were tiny. One miniscule scoop of rice, and an entrée hardly befitting the nearly $ 16 price for a restaurant located in a strip mall. High prices are fine for high quality food, but this isn’t it. Rubbery calamari, 2 pieces of shrimp, 2 mussels, and the rest only green peppers. Please. That’s dismal.
Almost forgot the funny part. We walked in to an empty restaurant (2 other tables). They wanted to know if we had reservations. Uhm… do we need them? There’s nobody in here. Clearly for a reason.

We enjoyed our massaman and pad Thai. The beef was slightly overcooked but otherwise a decent meal. Also liked the fact we got 2 dinner entrees for about $ 20.

My friends absolutely love Hibiscus. I’ve been here four times and can’t say the same. I wouldn’t say it’s terrible, it’s just not memorable. The last time I went, I had drunken noodles. They had the heat, but no other flavor. It was like eating slightly spicy buttered noodles. The Thai iced tea was good. Avoid regular iced tea though… that comes from the soda fountain.
There are definitely places that are worse, but also others nearby that are much better.

Very authentic Thai with great service! We have ventured here twice now and the food is still as good as we remembered it to be from our first visit.
The staff are kind and recommend entrees that we have yet not been satisfied with.
Really recommend this place for locals to try out. We have found our new Thai food spot!

I’ve been back a few times to try a variety of dishes. You’ll be disappointed by the non-​fresh noodles and the bland rice dishes. The flavors just aren’t there.
If Pei Wei is your favorite Chinese restaurant, you’ll probably love this place.
