California Cactus Ranch

The place has wonderful cactus/​succulent type plants. The only thing I did not like was that it was only open on the weekends and they only took cash and checks. Their prices are not cheap but it is a place where you will find just about any type of cactus/​succulent type plants. I would think this place has the best selection in the Los Angeles area. I also wish they spoke a bit better English there and to explain how to transplant and care for these plants.

Full disclosure: I know very little about plants or nurseries. This place is a little overwhelming at first because there is so much to look at, different sizes, and some areas are overgrown. That being said it was a wonderful and fun adventure for my husband and I on a Sunday. We left an hour and a half later with 2 flats of succulents and mini cacti and one medium sized agave variation. There is such a great selection! Fun to explore! To echo some past reviews, weren’t greeted or helped by anyone while we were there and it took a few minutes to find someone to ring us up. It didn’t bother us though. We I’ll be back soon to pick out more cacti soon!

I took my daughter to OSH this weekend to buy some little succulents she wanted to plant in a container. She didn’t like the selection so I did a search on Unilocal and found this place was open. We had no idea what to expect. California Cactus Ranch is one of the most fascinating nurseries I have ever visited. The beauty and diversity of desert-​climate species on display is breathtaking and the environment is very relaxing. The prices were consistent with what we would have paid at OSH and my daughter found everything she needed for her little succulent planter. I didn’t have the same problems with customer service noted by some reviewers. The place is huge and criss-​crossed by little paths and aisles, so it’s not easy to see who’s minding the store. But if you holler they’ll come help you out.

If you love a rare and exotic cactus and succulents, this is a place for you! Some of the other reviews are not appropriate as the customer should understand that this is normally a wholesaler that is only open to the public on weekends, it is a privilege to be able to shop here for such amazing unique and rare pieces! I have never seen barrel cactus so large, and neon blue cactus! vyou get what you pay for, these rare species are expensive! And they’re healthy large sizes come at a price!

Plenty of boxes at the entrance — be sure to pick one up to carry your selections in.
I was greeted by a gentleman who asked if I needed any help when I was standing by the front– I was looking lost, I assume. I told him I was fine, just lost my partner — he joked that that happened all the time here.
We made our purchases from the same gentleman– without being prompted he started telling us the names of our selections– when I whipped out my phone to take note, he slowed down and spelled out each name for me.
We will most definitely return next time we are in the area.

I had a very great experience here due to all the varieties and colors of succulents there were. I was overwhelmed and had much trouble deciding on which ones I should pick. I probably spent a good 2 hours here and trust me it’s worth it! This is a highly recommend place to shop for succulents!

Not impressed. Great selection of succulent plants, hence the 2 stars, but that’s all there is about this place.
Like other people mentioned, we were extremely unimpressed with their customer service. We walked in and weren’t even acknowledged, even though there was a guy right there who saw us walk in. We had our baby with us in his stroller and the isles were way too narrow for it, so I ended up staying near the entrance with the stroller, while my husband went in to browse around (he is the one who said they had a good selection, I didn’t even get to see it as I could not access with the stroller). More than anything, I was put off by how unwelcome we were made to feel. Even though several workers walked by me and baby, not one of them said ‘hi’. My husband said that there was an employee helping another customer further in where he went, but that most customers were browsing around on their own. The impression we got was that you had to know what you’re looking for to shop at this place, as assistance is not necessarily available and most employees don’t care enough about customers.
After reading the reviews saying how they’re more expensive than other places too, I’m really glad we didn’t buy anything there, though we left without even inquiring about prices. Note: there are no prices on the plants. You have to inquire at the front desk and they charge by pot size. Parking is on the street, but at least it’s free.
I don’t think we’ll be going back. No reason to.

This is a wholesale nursery with a ton of material, and generally sells to the retail nursery trade. However, if you feel you will get a good deal… think again!
The prices they are asking are outrageous!
A common species of cactus in a 15 gallon pot can run you several hundred dollars, so be prepared. They have the nerve to not accept credit cards and there is really poor customer service.
My sense of things is that they really do not care about retail customers, so it might be better to go elsewhere.

Huge selection, but that is useless if no one wants to sell you anything. Could not find an employee anywhere even after calling out. Might have bought a few things had there been anyone to ring me up. Prices are very high though, so maybe they did me a favor. Tiny succulents I pay from $ 0.50 to $ 1.50 are $ 2.50 here and prices go up from there for larger pot sizes. Larger sizes are very expensive
The place is huge and interesting, but a mess with weeds and trash.
I would recommend the place on Topanga by the 118 which also has a huge selection but in addition has friendly helpful owners and staff and way better prices.

Definitely an eclectic place. Interesting and vast selection of every sort of succulent BUT, the prices are just lousy, the staff is disinterested, there were huge areas where flats of succulents were overrun with weeds, others were dead from lack of water and complete neglect. It was shocking in some areas what poor shape some of the plants were in. Definitely has a mom and pop vibe, but a mom and pop who don’t give a damn about their customers. That said, though, it’s such an odd place and so completely different from any other nursery I’ve visited, if you are a succulent nut and if you have an hour to wander around, might be worth it. But, if you just want a basic selection of succulents go to OSH or Treeland or Home Depot or any other nursery, because California Cactus Ranch has terrible prices and little to no customer service.

Excellent selection like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Literally three acres of cacti and succulents and all sizes/​maturity. Feels very mom and pops and the staff definitely know their stuff and are willing to take time giving you an education. The prices are fair and I would much rather support a place like this than a large retail type. I’ll be back for sure.

This place is huge. Very good selection. The green houses are filled with beautiful plants that are well taken care of. It’s fun to just walk around and look at everything. It can be a bit pricey for the larger sized pots, but the quality seems very good. I’ll be coming back for sure. And there is plenty of street parking.

We looked around for a cart or basket. There are some laying around as you enter.
Prices are located at the store front (prices based on pot size). The entrance to the 3 green house rooms. Most things beyond yellow tape aren’t for sale. Cheaper by the dozen (basically get one free).
They have tons of cool pots and garden ceramics.
Lots of little oddball plants. Super fun to explore!

This nursery is out of this world! I like to take friends here from out of town. Great place for gift shopping too.

This is an eclectic nursery with the laziest most useless workers I’ve ever seen. I watched multiple customers stand at the cash register and literally yell for assistance. Despite their pleas for «anyone to please take my money» no one appeared. They then proceeded to leave without their purchases. After 10 minutes without a single worker making an appearance, what can you do?
I wouldn’t call the nursery well organized. Flats of succulents are scattered across piles of fertilizer and there are empty containers and soda cans laying amongst the plants. Towards the back there are weeds standing taller than me. Overall not a well kept nursery.
On a positive note they have a wide selection of cacti and succulents. The prices are high for your run of the mill stuff, but there are some good finds in here if you don’t mind sifting through trash and clutter.

This sprawling succulent and cacti compound offers a lot in the way of unique specimens and plant life. It’s fairly big, about 20 min to do a full walk through. The premises is clean and laid out well. Lot of cacti everywhere, keep your children close.
There’s a lot of stock I’ve seen elsewhere but in far larger quantities making it easier to find the ideal cacti or succulent. Some standard selections were priced a bit higher which is a bit off considering this is wholesale operation and you should expect more of a deal.
There was a good assortment of lithops and hopefully they expand their selection in the future. Definitely not as many rarities as I hoped for, but took home enough curiosities to make the drive worth it.
As I mentioned before, this is normally a wholesale operation during the week and not a nursery where you have your hand held. Basically don’t come here expecting anyone walking you through the rows helping you plan you next landscaping project.
Overall it’s a pretty interesting place to go your first time but if you’re not local, the not so bargain prices and lack of customer service really don’t justify the trip from part further out.

The name says it: Cactus Ranch! If you love cacti and succulents this is the place to visit. We went on a Sunday morning as they opened and we were the only customers :) so we got lots of help! To get help, you have to ask, because yes, no one is following you to make you buy plants, and it felt good not to be followed … We wanted to know how big each cactus was going to grow, if it was better inside our outside, when to fertilize, which fertilizer to use (20−20−20) …
We got all the answers we needed, even the right soil to start a successful garden (in the Bay Area). We left with the trunk full of plants (mainly small or a little bigger), a beautiful composition of 8 cacti in a vase, a nice terracotta vase and three bags of soil for a total of $ 260. We got many, many plants so I don’t think it was expensive considering the amazing selection they have and the health of the plants. Also if you buy 12 or more of the same size vase, one is free. We spent more than one hour and had a great time! thank you Cactus Rancher we will be back

Amazing large selection of unusual great plants. Had a great time. They make you feel very comfortable here.

Killer selection, prices on the «standard» selection items are a bit higher than your standard nursery but non-​existent customer service.
I’m not talking bad service, or rude service but plain no service available. No one on the grounds, no one in the office, no one even answered the phone when we called to find out if someone could ring us up.
We did find a jumpy and a birthday partying starting but that was about it.
I’m not that big of a succulent freak and will skip on their rare varietals in exchange for actually being able to buy and take them home.
