The Magpie Cafe Pop-up Brunch

There is a family of Magpies that live in the tree outside my bedroom window. Though the species is one my father would rather see wiped from the planet (Why, Dad? Why???), I find myself fond of the bird, with its long sweeping tail, inky blue feathers and proud white chest.
So it would make sense, at least on the surface, that I would also be fond of a pop-​up brunch, named after the bird. Well, named after the coffee roasters who caffeinated us brunch-​goers. But that establishment, is of course, named after the bird. In any event, this pop-​up brunch at Chapel Tavern’s awesome «new» bar was an absolute success, if you ask me.
If I could sum the meal up quickly (which is the opposite of what I want to do), I would say that it reminded me of having breakfast on a French ranch. Everything was fresh and familiar, like that which you find on my grandmother’s breakfast table, but was elevated in both preparation (for example, the 63-​degree duck egg. I don’t know if it was the strong pour-​over coffee or my utter excitement for the duck egg, but I was unable to stay planted on my bench, jumping around with anxious joy) AND in presentation. The cream cheese biscuit and gravy were tied with the duck egg and mortadella ragu for best item on the plate, which isn’t to say that the fritata was overlooked. It, in combination with its sauce, provided a seemingly lighter component. After all, zucchini-​green always makes you feel a little better about asking for a second cheese biscuit.
We were all oohing and ahhing over what turned into our several-​hour brunch (although we cleaned our plates in no more than 10 minutes, it seemed), and although our requests for more biscuits were repeatedly denied (and don’t think I didn’t see you eat three, Ms. hostess!), all six of us had nothing but love in our hearts and bellies for the Magpie pop-​up brunch. And speaking of bellies, thanks for choosing to have it at Chapel, which happens to be an amazing bar. The men were thus able to demolish their cocktail, belly up to the bar, and chest bump over some beers, which I’m sure were also fantastic.
Hopefully these brunches will grow in number as quickly as the magpies in my tree! Props to Chapel, Campo, and Magpie for putting on something so awesome! Can’t wait for the next one!
