Sushi 7

Kwon hits it out of the park again! Once again he takes over old place and puts his magical touch on it.
After setting up his new Carson city restaurant TOMO, he returns to Reno and takes over Sushi 7.
Ambience: Nicely redone. Clean and simple. Just what you would want in a comfortable and inviting place to eat.
People: Kwon was working the sushi bar as usual making sure the orders got out expeditiously. Staff was great. Eduardo was our main server and was great. Food came out quickly and he always made sure we had everything. Special thanks for being so patient with the kids!
Food: We ordered a mix of all you can eat and ala carte. Crystal shrimp, Caterpillar, Saba, Unagi, Geisha, Ikura, Uzura, Toro, Mauro and Hamachi. I cant recall all the other stuff but it was all delicious!
5 Stars ***** If you are ever in the area you owe it to yourself to stop in and treat yourself to a good time.

I have driven by Sushi 7 dozens of times. Finally, I decided it was time to take a break from my usual sushi spots (Hiroba & Tha Joint) to try something new.
It was a Sunday afternoon around 4ish and the place was nearly empty… score! This means I won’t have to deal with bumping elbows at the sushi bar. We were instantly greeted upon arrival and seated at the bar.
Our chef immediately greeted us and asked if we wanted any appetizers. We started off with an order of mussels and yakitan. I knew as soon as I took my first bite into the yakitan that I was going to get along well with Sushi 7. Their mussels came out without the shell, which was actually a pleasant surprise, sometimes those stubborn mussels stick to the shell and it’s a fuss trying to eat ‘em.
Onto the most important part of AYCE — the sushi rolls were good… although none really stood out to me. I’ll usually try and eat at least 5 – 6 rolls but I was over it by the 3^rd roll.
One minor complaint: my boyfriend and I had been watching a football game that was on tv and a couple came to sit at the bar next to us and they had asked the waitress to change it to a different game. Without hesitation, the channel was flipped. It would’ve made the situation better if the waitress asked if we were watching the game or not. After all, we were sitting right in front of that specific television. No big deal though :)

Went here again on 3÷5÷16 and it just gets better every time!
We were honored to be served by the owner, Chef Kwon, this time.
Started off with appetizers & he made us a special Edamame, prepared with Garlic & Chile… delicious!
We had the usual assortment of Nigiri & again, Chef Kwon hit us with another special creation, Seared Albacore… WOW! We tried an assortment of long rolls that were sooooo good… everything here is so fresh & tasty.
Halfway through the meal, Kwon handed us over to his Sushi Chef, Juan, who had served us on our initial visit. Juan made some amazing creations, as well, including a couple of his own creations, called the «Volcano» & the «Pinkachu» (sp?)…make sure you ask for them when you visit… outstanding!
This is my new go to place… you must go here the next time you want great Sushi!

This restaurant on the corner of McCarran and Las Brisas is just delightful.
First an admission, I was scared to try Sushi 7 under the old owners, based purely on the snippet of a review somewhere that may have simply said… ‘Bright yellow ginger!!! YIKES!‘
Take any reviews from the prior owners and throw them out the window.
The new owners brought their awesome rep with them from prior ventures, and then re-​earned all the accolades.
The miso is simple and spot-​on.
The fish was fresh and well prepped when needed, and left in its natural state As much as possible.
The AYCE includes small saki Monday –Thursday only.

So Sushi 7 has a new owner. Reno Famous Kwon! Sushi Expert that brought you, pretty much every top rated sushi joint in Reno. After taking a break and selling his previous restaurant, he took over this place and it shows. It’s amazing how one person can turn a restaurant around. He’s not like the typical owner who sits in the back and count cash. Kwon runs around his restaurant and makes sure everyone is satisfied. He checks in on the chefs to make sure they prepare the fish to his exact standards. Service here is always great. Chefs are lively and engaging. Then there’s Kwon and his wife who makes sure you’re satisfied.

Stopped in with a group of Unilocalers following Paul’s beer UYE. We all had the all you can eat and shared gyozas and a wide variety of rolls and nigiri. I am a huge fan of gyoza’s and theirs were delicous! I know we were there for sushi but I could’ve eaten the gyoza’s all night long. Super yummy! They were slightly crispy on the outside and stuffed full of flavorful filling. As for the sushi we had a large variety of rolls and everything was presented beautifully. The ingredients were fresh and the rice to filling ratio was great. My favorites of the night were the Compa and the A-​Pink.
Service and food were great and I would definitely return to get my sushi and gyoza fix.

This was one of my favorite sushi spots before the new ownership.
Now it is just another generic sushi joint.
The good news is now my wife wont make me drive from the other-​side of sparks just to eat here.
Sorry to see you go Sushi Seven… I thought what we had was real :(

My Husband and I use to come here often. It was a nice break from the chain sushi places in town. It was obvious as soon as you walk in that it was under new ownership. The rolls changed to compete with the local chains and now they are less desirable.
The service was awkward, like they were all in some kind of trial review period. Forced smiles and the atmosphere was just uncomfortable.
I loved how even though the old owners would work along with their staff, there was never a feeling of unease.
Not only have the staff lost their spark, but the sushi has morphed into generic gas station rolls :(there is nothing to separate them from all the other chains in town. They even raised their price.
We wont be back.

Background — Just finished up at UYE Beer Club and needed some food.
Atmosphere — Part of a small strip mall. AYCE sushi can be done at the tables which is nice when you have a group of four.
Food
Drinks — Just water, I had enough beer earlier in the night.
Appetizers — My wife loves the gyozas. We started with two orders of them, and another two orders later in the night. They are either fly fried or deep fried, either way they were good. Somehow I missed them in the pics I took.
Dinner — I have no clue what rolls I was eating. The three ladies were ordering away. I loved all the rolls they ordered. They mixed up the type of rolls up. Even some nigiri, the yellow tail varied in color while the octopus was solid while and consistent.
Service — I think we had every floor runner working our table which was nice. They even split the bill after the fact. We all forgot about the 10% Unilocal check in discount.
Future — Yes.

Food was decent but don’t go with a big party on a Friday night. It was a bit disastrous! The staff tried to keep up but the organization was not good. Not a good place to celebrate a 16^th birthday on a busy Friday night.

I’ve been looking for a sushi place close to my work and I think I found the one! Really fresh fish and they are definitely not skimpy on it either! I got mine to go but service was still really good. Been to a few places where they won’t even acknowledge you when you enter. Will definitely come back :)

I came here tonight with my husband and a few friends. Hubby and I had been here once before when the previous owners still had the place and it was okay then, so at the behest of our friend we came back.
It really wasn’t great. The service was quite bad. The waitresses kept forgetting about our orders, no one person was assigned to us so they kept asking us for orders over and over or brought us doubles of food orders. A simple request of «Can they please add hot sauce to my roll» was met with complete confusion. I suggest sitting at the bar so this doesn’t happen.
The food was really mediocre. The fish wasn’t the best quality and our appetizers arrived cold. There was nothing really horrible about it, but nothing stood as as being really good either.
It was a pretty disappointing experience and we’re going to refrain from going back.

I have visited Sushi 7 a few times, and each time the experience was okay. The service is consistently good but the sushi rolls are consistently inconsistent. In one night, you can order the same roll many times and it will look and taste pretty different each time.
During my most recent visit, I felt that more rolls had rice that completely fell apart than stuck together and I thought the overall presentation was pretty sloppy. Our table ordered some nigiri and the fish just didn’t look very healthy. Presentation isn’t everything, but it does help. A majority of the rolls we tasted were pretty good, but a few were unpleasant. I highly recommend trying the Yummy and the Truckee. Bonus: check in on Unilocal!and get 10% off your order!
To me, Sushi 7 is a good place to stop in for a roll or two, but I probably won’t come back for AYCE. I feel like Reno has a LOT of sushi options and if I’m going to get AYCE, I’m going to get something that is consistently great — not a hit or miss.

Sushi 7 wasn’t even on my radar as another sushi place to try in Reno, being I found my fave place already for now. Sushi 7 is located way in the NW of Reno and I spend most of my time in the south end of town. Reno Unilocaler Robert S. knowing I love Ikura (Salmon Caviar), suggested I try this place as his experience here was great, especially the Ikura. Well, OK then! My BF was busy, so I grabbed my Cuz who knows the local scene and off we went. It’s a bit of a drive to get here form the south end of town, but having driven to Sakana’s Somersett location many times, I’ll drive for excellent sushi.
We get there and enter. We’re greeted by a hostess, and then along comes Kwon all smiling. He recognizes my Cuz and me and shakes our hands. I know Kwon from his Tomo Sushi in Carson. We wanted a seat at the bar of course, but it was all full as were half of the tables. We waited a bit and some seats cleared. Kwon sure does have a following as the place is pretty busy and he just took over. I asked him, and he is the new owner, not just manager and he still owns Tomo in Carson. The lunch price was $ 17.95 AYCE. The staff here is all hustling about as I see Kwon all rushing around directing his symphony keep things running. This is a big place with 6 – 7 chefs behind the long bar.
I’m not big on rolls really and we both love to enjoy the purity of nigiri style sushi and feel the real texture and flavors of each fish. We start with hamachi (yellowtail), muguro (red tuna), albacore and of course Ikura. The orders came out super fast… almost too fast. 3 orders of each and each were plated separately. The cuts were not quite perfect and the rice squeezed at bit too tight, but the size was good. The quality as far as taste and texture and melty in my mouth were about average to a little above. The Albacore was exceptional though, super tender, almost fall apart. The Gravlax, aka, house cured salmon, we didn’t try as I’ve had Kwon’s before in Carson and didn’t care for it.
The Ikura raved about by my Unilocaler friend was good but still had an undercurrent of a taste like sake (the drink). It did a add character to the flavor profile, but I didn’t care for it so much, but my Cuz liked it better than at Pisces where the caviar tastes more pure… like the ocean. I was shown a pic of a Ikura creation here by my Unilocaler friend with a fish wrapped around the rice and Ikura piled on top. I asked about that, and one of the chefs knew what I was talking about. He fixed a couple of orders of what came out as salmon wrapped rice ball with Ikura piled on top. See my pic. I’d never see that before and hoisted that big thing into my mouth trying not to spill any eggs. I close my lips and bit down and swirl the mix of rice, fish and caviar over my tongue. Wow, that’s something! I will say this concoction really does work. Get this!
Pushing an off menu item, we ordered a Hamachi Kamma, cooked Yellowtail Cheek collar. You must order this if you never had one. It’s included in AYCE. Broiled, it was very nice, about as good as anyone in town.
Next to try was the Saba (cured Mackerel), Tomago (sweet egg), Unagi (Eel), seared Tuna, Tobiko, and deep fried upside down shrimp. The Saba was not so good and sort of dried and too salty. Saba at most sushi houses, is just ordered from the Saba «factory», pre cured and vac packed. I never really like Saba till I had it cured in house and not at the «factory», like they do at my fave sushi house in south Reno. The rest of the nigiri was cut generous for Reno, but lacked plating effort. Here’s the fish, but nothing pretty. The deep fried upside down shrimp was pretty good with a nice light fried coating on the shrimp, and then piled with scallops.
I usually don’t partake in dessert with sushi, but I gave the deep fried ice cream a try. It was a big scoop tempura coated and covered in whipped cream, chocolate and red sauce. The tempura was a little tough and chewy, but the ice cream was fine… I’ll pass on dessert.
Overall, I’m going with a 3 star A-​OK rating. The fish quality is more or less OK, good albacore and the Ikura creation was unique. We didn’t do any rolls this trip. The size of the place dictates the chefs to be very fast, but with there goes the nice presentation and plating that encompasses the «art» of sushi, you just don’t have time to do it when you need to get stuff out so fast. I didn’t ask if they do half rolls here, cause like, who wants to eat the same thing for 8 pieces? I’m ready for a new taste after 2– 3 pieces. Kwon sure does work hard to keep his place running smooth and I’ll give him credit for cultivating his following. But for me, it wasn’t an exceptional experience, more of less OK, and the drive here for me is not worth a just OK experience. I rather stick to my «bouquet» sushi house where I know my chef and he knows me. Give Kwon’s Sushi7 a try, it may work out for you, depending on your tastes and expectations. After my first visit with the new owners, I wrote a quick review, but I didn’t really have a lot to review from that first visit to be fair. I came back with friends a week later and proceeded to have the best nigiri I’ve ever experienced. I’m not normally a huge nigiri person in general, but that night, I ate more than I probably ate all year. The salmon and albacore were divine. I liked my rolls that I did have, they were made very nicely and not sloppy. The chefs that night for our group were Jose and a girl who’s name I didn’t get, two of three that stayed with the new owners during the transfer according to Jose. I asked for my regular signature creation, which I do have a few ingredients… the chefs were joking about giving me one rice, as in, one rice kernel. I did hear one chef say that it sounded good what I was having them create though. (tuna, ebi, lemon, cilantro, krab stick with no sauce). The Godzilla that night, wasn’t quite as crispy as I prefer, but still good for a fried roll. I was ready to run home and bump up to 5 stars. My laziness prevented a quick turn around on a review though, which is okay, because I have yet another visit to count under my belt for a good amount of observations now.
I came back about a week later, different sushi chef, not sure on the name, the rolls and nigiri were not presented as well. I ordered another A-​pink, which was just not as nicely made as before, and barely torched with the tobiko on about two pieces and the rest on the plate. I noticed too, the nigiri slices may be pre-​sliced, which kind of sucks. Maybe just for this chef? It was something I remember with the old owners of sushi 7, but hadn’t noticed since. My signature creation, which the chef insisted I name (We came up with Bewitched… I didn’t want my name, but there is a correlation no?), forgot to put cilantro on twice.
Note, the mochi ice cream comes with whipped cream and strawberry and chocolate syrup. I prefer to not have that, so remember to request it without.
This is definitely still a top ranking for my personal AYCE choices in Reno, it is in my neighborhood, I just will be more picky about who is my chef. I liked Jose and the girls’ creations and personalities a lot, so I will keep an eye out for them in the future. Definitely a place for me to hit up when I want nigiri.

New owner brought us back.
It was just ok the last time we were in. Heard recently there was a new owner and several changes to menu and quality. Nothing about the bar and dinning has changed– it was all nice and clean.
Our chef was very good and attentive. Server kept the waters and sodas full, and empties picked up. AYCE at night is $ 24. Check in with Unilocal took 10%off.
Right off I like the mussels– four to an order and served in a spoon and not the shell. They were large in size too. A few orders of nigiri came out — I was surprised. Nice sized pieces of ahi, shrimp and octopus with tiny balls of rice. Yeah !! Less fill up on rice and a chance to try more fish. We tried about 6 long rolls, a couple of hand rolls, several servings of nigiri and some mochi. Impressed with the amount of fish and vegetables versus rice in them all. Nothing had an off flavor or smelled. With everything we ate I couldn’t believe we didn’t roll out of there. We felt like we wanted to try more but were full and comfortable.

I have been going to sushi 7 since they opened in 2007, so I wanted to check it out when I found out it was under new ownership. The quality of fish seems to have improved, and the new menu had plenty to offer. I will definitely continue to be a return customer.

This place, now under new management (the people who started hiroba years ago then sold it), is easily one of my fav sushi spots in town. First off I should mention they have high quality habanero paste. I always get the spiciest spicy tuna handroll they can make when I go to sushi, and some places just have to pour in a crap ton of chili powder, then the roll is dark red and tastes nothing like the fish anymore, some places pathetically only have Sriracha (which only gets to about a 3 on the spicy scale and once again that’s with nuking the flavor), then a very small handful of places shell out for the high grade habanero. It’ll make you sweat and flush and turn red without just making your mouth hurt.
Moving on, the service, staff, chefs, food quality, all top notch and they have a great menu.

**UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT***
I typically don’t write reviews while still in the restaurant. But after eating my food I have a few updates that I want to add to my old review. So as my third experience– the food quality is much much better, the atmosphere has improved aesthetically, and overall I am very happy I came here to try this place again. I ordered a «sparks» roll which was gone in seconds! The rainbow roll was much much better, and he was pleased with the spicy tuna roll.
They have only been open under new management for three days. Overall, quality from the last management has been far surpassed. I absolutely cannot wait to come here again. I’ll be back, Sushi 7!!!
Also, I haven’t done the AYCE yet, but I do believe they still do the punch cards.

Note: my opinion is based off overtime. Not off of one visit.
Upon entering you are given the option for bar or table. Optioned for bar. The menus have been updated and the options have changed slightly for the better. First request was order of mussels. The delivery of the mussels was a surprise to me as I have been there multiple times before. Upon taste, mussels have a spicy and sweet flavor to them due to changes of the sauce.
The chefs are a delight and are admirable to you being their guest. Words do not define the change but it is good to see a change for the better and that the staff continuously work to assure your visit is a delightful one.
