Gordon’s Photo Service

The first thing I did after moving to Reno in October was to hunt down a camera shop. I found Gordon’s and was very happy to see an «old fashioned «shop like Gordon’s thriving.
I shoot film (have been for 36 years, don’t like digital much) and to find a place selling used gear at reasonable prices and processing film in acceptable turn around time was exactly what I was looking for. Plus the discounts for being a member is more than worth the one time fee.
So far I’m extremely happy doing business at Gordon’s.
Going on 8 months and I’m even more pleased with my interactions at Gordon’s. When I shoot color I like using expired film for a variety of reasons. While Gordon’s doesn’t keep a lot of expired film on hand so far I’ve been very happy with what I’ve found there and at a dollar a roll there’s nothing to complain about.

So glad I came here. Online competitor didn’t have what I wanted and was charging 65 for a battery. At Gordon’s I got the battery and a charger with European and car options plus best customer service ever for only $ 20 more. Come to this place when you need anything for photos it’s great

My friend Mike Smith recommended Gordon’s. I’m retired and have to watch my budget, but I love photography, One of my Nikon lens’s died, no auto focus, so I wanted to look for a new one and have wanted a 300 mm zoom for a long time, you can get them on line, but their a little pricy. Gordon’s had two used lenses that fit the bill, for way under the price on line. I even learned some thing new about one of my Nikon’s.

This place has tons of used cameras, filters, lenses, and other accessories. It’s great. That’s why it’s getting 2 stars.
The customer service is very bad. Treated me like I didn’t know what I was talking about. I needed a 52 mm nd filter. I asked if they could check for a 1.2 ND filter, which is 4 stops, the gentleman in charge looked at me like I was stupid, he told me that didn’t exist. I told him I own that exact filter already, he again looked at me like I was dumb and asked what kind it was. I told him it was a cheap tiffen filter, he looked at me like I was dumb again and handed me a different filter and told me that THAT was a common ND filter. His attitude was really bad. He was condescending and makes you feel like he’s better than you.
Gordon’s Carson City is smaller, they have less used and new gear. But the customer service is amazing there. Try that one first if you need any camera gear.

I’ve been going here for years. They are always personable and helpful. Great place to drop off your camera for a thorough cleaning and equipment service needs.

It is nice to see a local camera store with staff that can actually answer your questions about both gear and photography.
I come in a lot, sometimes just to browse around and sometimes to buy a book on photography and, of course, to get film developed.
Everybody in this store is very friendly, very knowledgeable and they don’t look down on you, because you don’t know something.

Great customer service with a lot of inventory. So glad there is a place in Reno to shop for camera gear and to help with digital technology. Go here for your camera needs, and maintenance.

I am so happy we have a store like Gordons here in Reno. The employees are soo super nice regardless of my questions! Sometimes I have no idea what I need and other times I know exactly what I need and I have never been treated different in either situation, the general attitude is always light and easy going. Its never a bad experience, actually I love going there its like a treasure hunt every time!

I visited Gordon’s Photo Service Reno location after taking a look at their Carson sites. This store is definitely much larger although I didn’t get a sense that there is more inventory here. Sure, there’s a cabinet of used gear just as you walk in and there is a space for larger items like flash stands, etc that the Carson store lacks but there wasn’t anything here that made me say, «Oooo! I need to go to the Reno location instead of the Carson location!» I’m sure that if I lived in Reno and saw the Carson location after seeing this one I would say the same thing. ;-)
I found the staff to be very friendly, engaging, and personable. Two people asked me if I needed assistance and that was nice.
Prices for accessories with white price tags are reasonable if you join their Buyer’s Club which I did. Cameras seemed to be marked at MSRP but I suppose all things are negotiable (maybe?). Like the Carson store there was a decent amount of B&W developing material which is nice to see. There were plenty of tripods, bags, print based materials (i.e. albums, frames, etc), film, etc. I think there is very little missing from their store.
I’ll give them five stars because I liked the place, I was treated well, and I would not hesitate to come again if I’m in Reno. Could it be better? Sure, nothing is perfect and there is always room for improvement like in anything. Still, this looks like a good shop!

I am disappointed every time I walk into this store because their customer service is atrocious.
I have dealt with multiple employees at this store and every single one is condescending towards me because they think they know more about photography than I do. It’s one thing to be informative, it’s another to be rude when I am asking a question about a particular product.
Not only do they lack basic customer service/​people skills, it takes FOREVER for anyone to even acknowledge you when you walk in. Not a great first impression.
It’s really unfortunate that I have gift cards to spend at this store but I have a hard time bringing myself to take a trip down there. I try to support local businesses, but so far I have been buying all of my equipment for my DSLR online. B&H is great!

Today, June 9^th 2012 around 2pm … I Walk in, got ignored for ten minutes, walked out. Came back 15 min later, stood there for another 10min while not one employee even made eye contact with me.
I would be a fool to waste any more of my time here …

I am a professional photographer who has done business at Gordon’s since they opened in Carson City over 30 years ago. Their service can not be beat regarding all aspects of photography! The staff is friendly and knowledgable.

What a great service! Not only were they faster than they estimated and less cost than estimated but they were nice too!

I travel internationally for work to some unusual places (last year I did a crazy round the world trip that started in London, went on to Scotland, Bangkok, Myanmar, Singapore, and back to the USA), and in a few weeks I need to go to Mexico and Thailand.
Part of my job is photographing the places I visit, and the images have to be worthy enough to be produced in our annual catalog. So dragging around both an inexpensive pocket digital camera and a very expensive digital SLR with a multitude of lenses can be a challenge, especially when you’re in a third world country in remote places.
Gordon’s is the place I go for my camera accessories, anything from filters to lenses to highly durable camera bags. While their stuff is not cheap, it’s high quality, and the staff can come up with different options depending on your needs.

I go here for all my printing needs. I also have bought and will continue to buy all my camera gear through them. Their prices are great and their staff goes beyond what is necessary to help you with whatever you may need. I am so grateful that we have Gordon’s in Reno. Thank you to the staff and lab for everything you do!

Anyway, they should change their name to Gordon’s Photo DISservice. I went here to print some photos I took in Hawaii at my friends’ wedding, and was told by the lady behind the desk that I needed to obtain a release to print my photos. I wondered why I needed a release from myself to print my own photos. She replied saying that the photos «looked» professional, and that I needed a release before they would print them. She cited a $ 200,000 fine that they would be assessed if they printed my photos.
Long story short, I received the photos they agreed to print without a release and never went back.
This town is too small to treat customers like this, and judging from other reviews on here Gordon’s isn’t doing everything right. People are correct in saying that there aren’t many photo places in Northern Nevada, but I will take my photos to Costco before I take them to Gordon’s. If they don’t want my business, I will gladly take it elsewhere.

Not to be contradictory but this place really does a good job of having the stuff I need at the prices I need to pay. I have many times had to come here because «best buy» just doesn’t have the stuff that is needed. From the proper filters to the accessories. These guys always have what I need.
I’ve been a club member for 20 years. We are lucky to have a real photography/​camera shop like this in the area. When the T2i was in real high demand they put me on the list and gave me a call as soon as they came in.
This last Monday I needed to get a case for my SD cards… did Best Buy have them? No But Gordon’s had a decent selection to choose from.

Horrible! Every time I go in there it reminds me of why I don’t like to go there! Every time it feels like they are talking down to you because you are not a «professional» like them. They are always in a hurry to stop talking to you! Unfortunately it is one of the only camera stores in this town. I guess they feel that gives them the right to treat people like crap! I recently went there with a friend of mine who is a professional photographer in LA and the salesman proceeded to argue with him about a product that my friend uses on a daily basis for work and told him he did not know what he was talking about! My recommendation is to only go there if you need large good quality prints!!! NOTHING ELSE!!! Unless you want to be talked down to by some jackass that thinks he is an photography genius!

I love taking pictures, and back when I was still in college I had full access to a darkroom and always developed my black and white shots myself. Now that those days are long gone I have to rely on photo labs to develop my artsy b/​w pics, and let me tell ya, this is the ONLY place to get it done.
If you want to see the difference take a roll of film and drop it off at Gordon’s, then take those negatives and have them developed at a standard grocery store photo lab. The difference in mind-​blowing. These guys know what they’re doing, and don’t mind spending a little extra time touching up your photos to add contrast or fix red-​eye. This is great for color photos, but downright necessary when it comes to b/​w.
The only reason I’m deducting a star (and I’d only deduct half of one if it were possible) is because of an experience I had there in November. I’m very into film cameras. I have a digital and have lately been using it a lot, but I still think the best way to learn to take pictures is to take them the old fashioned way. So, when my little sister started talking about getting into photography I set about finding her a nice little starter Nikon. I know Gordon’s sells used cameras, so I thought this was the best place to start.
When I walked in and asked the woman behind the counter for a non-​digital SLR she looked at me like I’d grown a second head. I believe her exact response was something like, «Like a film camera? Why? Nobody buys those anymore.» She was friendly enough and I’m not griping about the service at all, but I expect a place that sells hundreds of different types of film AND prides itself on having the best photolab in the state would understand that there are still people out there who use film cameras.
She got a supervisor, who showed me a few used cameras, all of which were incredibly well-​priced, but none of which were Nikons, so I wound up leaving empty handed. All in all I’d say that Gordon’s is a great place to get and leave film, but maybe not the best place to get a camera to use it in.

Just picked up some pictures from Gordon’s, and they are gorgeous! This is definitely the place to go if you have special photos to print up. They charge more than most photo labs, but you see it in the quality. They also do giant enlargements, digital photo services, photo restoration, photography equipment… the whole bit. There are always plenty of people working so you usually can find someone willing to give you time and attention. The place does get a bit stinky from all the chemicals, so if you have a sensitive sniffer, beware.
