Batch Cupcakery

I have been craving cake so when I saw Batch on my way to Süp yesterday I got excited about treating myself to something sweet! The guy working didn’t even get up from his chair to greet me — he said hi and asked if I was looking for something. I said I hadn’t been in before and was checking things out. All he did was tell me to let him know if I wanted something and went back to whatever was on his phone. I walked out moments later without making a purchase. I love supporting local businesses, but why would I give my $ to a place that can’t even provide their customers any type of service.
Here’s a tip: When someone steps into your shop you should get on your feet to greet and assist. When they tell you it’s their first time in maybe give them some info about the place, pick their brain about what they’re craving, and make a suggestion since they obviously don’t know your product.

Just had my first Batch Cupcake. Not being a cake eater, I was sceptical to say the least. I was pleasently surprised how light the cake portion was. The buttercream frosting was also better than expected. Even though this was my first from there, it won’t be the last!

Yummy yummy, the owner of this place is just the sweetest lady ever. She dropped off some cupcakes at our work and we had the privilege of tasting them and they were just wonderful. I had the vinilla cherry one and it was amazing the frosting just melts in your mouth so great and the owner is just as sweet as her cupcakes !!! :)

I have never been overly impressed with their cupcakes but they are the only shop in town so we go occasionally. Service has always been on the low end and when you go into the shop, the person behind the counter always acts inconvenienced.
The tipping point for me occurred when I decided to use batch to support a local charity event. I ordered 100 cupcakes and paid extra to have them delivered and set up. They called me 2 hours after the scheduled delivery time to say they had the wrong address but she read me the correct address so they just didn’t get the job done. They attempted to deliver the cupcakes 3 hours late but the event was over. The cupcakes were going to be a big part of the event and I was counting on Batch to provide the basic service they offered.
This place is not managed well and they place little value in the customers experience. I will not be back and hope a new bakery opens up in Reno in the near future.

DIdnt even get as far as ordering a cupcake, Entered the business and the employee had to turn down his rap music. Very few cupcakes to choose from and what was there didnt look fresh. Displays werent cleaned up… just not a place I chose to even order from.

WOW! I hadn’t been to Batch in over a year. I stopped to purchase a cupcake for a special treat for my friend and I, they didn’t impress me today. Which is sad, because I use to love them.
None of the chalkboard tables were clean: they all were scribbled on and had food crumbs on them. I came in when no one was sitting down or getting up, so I sorta feel that they really had no excuse for dirty tables (clean them up after each customer please).
The complimentary water was lukewarm and the table it was on was dirty and un-​organized.
While Batch does offer a great selection of cupcakes with buttercream icing (very important to me, since I can’t eat cream cheese); the cupcake I had (the Pucker Up) was low on the lemon filling and the actual cupcake was just overly sweet (it was like they used 1 cup too much of sugar in the cupcake batter). It just tasted sweet, with no other flavors and clearly not enough lemon. For the cost of a cupcake here, I expect much more than what they delivered. If I wanted a pure sugary taste I could of dissolved sugar into water and drank it straight.
The woman at the counter was friendly, but her service wasn’t anything special.
I like the fact they still offer a punchcard. I also appreciate that they offer vegan and paleo treats.
Normally, when a restaurant or place disappoints me this much I don’t come back… but since they had been great in the past I’ll give them another chance… hopefully they won’t disappoint.

The service was good and quick, though we were the only ones in the store. We tried the David and Goliath, pucker up, and keep Tahoe blueberry. I thought they were just average. On all three cupcakes the cake was dry and didn’t have very much flavor. The frosting on all of them just tasted like sugar, far too sweet and I like a fairly sweet frosting. I don’t think they were worth $ 3.50 a piece; I honestly make better cupcakes at home.

Picked up a half dozen cupcakes today. They were GOOD. No complaints about the cupcakes. The girl working the counter was super sweet (ha) as well, and very patient with how indecisive I was. This place is a little pricy, but worth it. The cupcakes are so, so good. And some of the flavors are very creative!
I just wish they had more vegan options. They tout themselves as being so vegan-​friendly, and while having any vegan cupcakes at all is amazing, I want more options!
I got this incredible looking caramel pretzel concotion for my roommate and he said it was just as fabulous as it looked, I just want a vegan version of that. That’s all I’m asking for, Batch. That’s it. I don’t even need a huge assortment of vegan cupcakes, just a pretzel cupcake. Make it happen. (But for real, more vegan and probably GF/​paleo options would be a huge improvement.)
In summary: non-​vegans, go to Batch and buy a pretzel cupcake. Vegans, I’m very sorry about the pretzel predicament, but the vegan cupcakes are bomb too don’t worry.

Batch was playing Atmosphere when my fiancé and I walked in, which made him very happy. We ordered four cupcakes, and while they weren’t bad, they did not live up to the promise of their descriptions. For example, the Oreo cupcake was a regular chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting and half an Oreo cookie on top. The cookie dough cupcake did not contain or taste of cookie dough. They were a little too sweet, which is pretty unbelievable coming from someone firmly on Team More Frosting Always, but the cakes were moist and the price was about average for Reno.
Give Batch a shot and hopefully you’ll like them more than me!

Dear Batch Cupcakery:
Today was officially my last visit. You were once a beacon of joy for this vegan cupcake fan, with truly inspirational German chocolate vegan cupcakes. That’s probably why I have held on for so long hoping that possibly you would get your act together… but enough is enough. This marks the fourth random Saturday I have ventured to your door, before noon, in the sheerest act of optimism… that maybe just maybe you would have vegan cupcakes today…
You have four 3-​tier towers of cupcakes behind your counter. One single lonely tier of these four towers is the vegan cupcake tier. The other 11 tiers are ALWAYS full… and the one lonely vegan tier is ALWAYS empty. WHY???
When will you wake up and realize «Hmm… we ALWAYS sell out of vegan cupcakes, maybe we should bake more??? Maybe we could offer more than one tiny tier of vegan cupcakes since they are guaranteed to sell out??»
P. S. I don’t know a single person that would enjoy chocolate cupcakes with lemon frosting (the last vegan flavor you happened to have in stock months ago)… that again should have been a clue… «Wow… we ALWAYS sell out of vegan cupcakes, except these chocolate cupcakes with lemon frosting… hmmm… this must be a hideous flavor combination to offer as our only vegan flavor?»

I was not overly impressed with this place. Walking in the door we were greeted with an invisible «how ya doin». I looked around and didn’t see any one. As I approached the counter there was a young man sitting on a chair nose deep in a computer or TV or something. After a moment he got up, asked if we were looking for anything specific and made a few suggestions.
We had just eaten breakfast and were looking for a sweet treat to cap off our meal. Being early in the morning I assumed everything would be fresh. Honestly I don’t think it was.
We ordered two cupcakes vanilla for me and chocolate for her. both were dry and frankly my vanilla cupcake was not sweet at all. The frosting on the other hand was so sugary I had a hard time eating it. The chocolate was slightly better, but the balance of sweet and savory again was off.
All in all it was not a great experience, the kid behind the counter did try to help us after a few moments, and the inside was cute and inviting. problem is the main attraction, the cupcakes just weren’t that good. we probably wont be returning anytime soon.

STALE/​DRY & COCKROACH
I would think this place would be making items fresh every day or at least the cupcakes. I came one day, it was ok but stale and dry. Came the next day with a friend, same items were on the the shelf/​under the glass. Then as we were deciding what we wanted… guess what I saw… COCKROACH. Yep that’s right. It was crawling on the wall on the left side as you enter. I wonder how many eggs were in the items in the kitchen and racks.
We walked out. Sorry cockroaches are a deal killer. Does Washoe county health department know? They will soon.

I personally love the Gluten Free Variety!

Time: 7:17pm/92°F sunny
Purpose: The plan was to head over to SixFour Growlers next door. The big cupcake signage out front looks cool. Since next door closes at 10pm, I made the walk over.
Set-​up: Located on the out skirts of Virginia ave minutes from downtown Reno. This place is hard to see driving by no advertising or logos seen. Batch shares its space with several other businesses within the complex. Lot is average size and spacious. Be careful when backing out as this place makes a kid darting through lot pointing out cupcake. Inside is a six person seater as most of the place has island table stands with goods on display. Full front end counter with pedestal all fill. Couple of here and there displays some fill and some sold out. The color scheme brown, green, white and orange along with bright lights makes you in spending mood. Well put together shop thats not cramp up having room to maneuver around without knocking things down.
Staff: Only a girl about her mid 20s doing her duties. Friendly and knowledgeable as I ask whats this and that? She didn’t get upset that I ask more than usual. Certainly a multitasker as, she answers me while doing her task briskly and makes sense. Within five minutes, I walk out with a bag with everything I wanted to try.
Cleanliness: Grade A, standard baked shop with items wrapped, package or cover. No items left out in open were seen. Cake pedestal stands wipe clean, spotless.
Eats/​Drinks: Vanilla push-​pop cupcake $ 3, hand crimp lemon pie $ 3, organic chai cookie $ 1.50, cinnamon cupcake $ 3. Start off with the push-​pop. Icing were a little gritty and too sweet. The sponge cake itself, was kinda dried out, only the icing damper on top provide some moist. This wasn’t buttercream icing, but fondant. I felt like paying for plastic pop assembly than actual push-​pop as whole. Money wasn’t well spent on push-​pop. Cinnamon cupcake was better, but again icing so underwhelming with gritty feel and too sweet. Seems like this place uses one kind of icing for everything. Hits of cinnamon tasted like gingerbread while sponge a little more moist. This was edible. Organic chai cookie was under baked inside. While its chewy and fresh looking, it just didn’t wow me. Toss it in toaster oven hoping I can become a quick pastry chef for the time being. Chai cookie I like it, but need more chai flavors to make it more tasty. Lemon pie was somewhat disappointed. The fillings are the bright neon yellow production line type. Just what I hope not to see, I see on second bite. The pie shell was too thick. Had no real hints of butter just tasted bland without any special efforts to give it some flavor. Given the quantity of filling this shouldn’t be call a pie, but a cookie more like it. A measly less than full tablespoon of filling wasn’t even to balance this pie out. I’m looking at 92% pie shell crust with 8% filling here.
Main Features: GF items.
Products/​Services: Cupcake, cookie, pie, whoopie pie, push-​pop. GF, vegan, organic and paleo choices along with special dietary needs available. Special events and catering available.
Punch Lines: Friendly, clean, lively, modest cost, limited choices, strip mall complex, no deals on large quantity purchase, no promotion, no samples, seats are minimal, small lot, made on site, takes plastic, Unilocal deal $ 5 for $ 10.
Tradeoffs: Gets people in, but quickly realized its not all products suits their needs. For GF people you’ll find it somewhat disappointed as, you’ll get 2 – 3 items of GF while the rest are not.
Final Thoughts: In «The Biggest Little City in the World» Reno. On this stretch of Virginia street most businesses are average size shop without major make overs. Batch seems to fit in, but not sure about the vibrant theme. There wasn’t much vibrant going on this part of town as, people were milling around aimlessly. Not saying area is bad and all, but I just don’t see a bake shop making stardom in this area. Given the fact that only a limited amount of goods sold here, its just a matter of time people will be tired of it. I suggest new weekly items or daily specials posted. Doing things to attract first timers so, they’ll have a vivid memory of the place. Even though they may not buy on first visit, but at least now they know you’re there. It’s sure beats first time people like me today. After this experience I was disappointed already so, I may or may not repeat.

Just stopped by here to try out the paleo cupcakes. I was blown away! First of all, I have never had paleo baked goods and second of all, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. We got the chocolate paleo cupcake, the pumpkin banana cupcake, paleo cookies and a paleo bar. The chocolate paleo cupcake was a little dry but it still had pretty good flavor. The pumpkin banana cupcake was by far my favorite. The paleo bar was pretty good (they keep them in the fridge so you have to ask for it) and you can definitely taste the coconut. I’m saving the cookies for later.
I don’t really get the negative reviews posted so far. If you’re getting a specialty cupcake like gluten free or paleo, you can’t expect it to taste like the original (although the pumpkin banana comes close in my opinion). And this isn’t your local supermarket so the cupcakes might be more expensive than what you’re used to… Lastly, the service here is super friendly. I will definitely be returning.

I’m sorry to say that Batch has become hit or miss for me. I have been in quite a few times in the last year and more often than not I seem to be disappointed.
Most recently was this past weekend. I had a Java Joe cupcake and my twin had a Keep Tahoe Blueberry. Mine was super dry and overly sweet, hers was quite tasty. That sums it up perfectly. This place isn’t cheap, so it hurts my feelings when teh product isn’t as expected. Luckily my twin was willing to share her tastiness.
I’d also like to mention that all of their gluten free cupcakes taste the same. That was also an expensive lesson to learn! So save yourself the agony of deciding because it’ll be the same regardless.
If you are willing to gamble on a cupcake then hit place up.

I just came back from my first visit to Batch Cupcakery. Since I was out for my version of a power-​walk I did not have my tablet or phone so I did not get any pics of the cute and colorful shop. Lots of little domed covered platters of cupcakes, croissants, cookies and dessert breads. Everything is fresh made from scratch and they have vegan, gluten-​free and paleo choices as well as the stuff for us normal folks LOL! I absolutely loved the color scheme and stools. I picked up 4 different cupcakes for my neighbors for $ 13. Definitely a place for a special gift or a delectable dessert or even a sinfully delicious treat. They also have a Milk Bar with oodles of different types of milk. Yet another Midtown treasure.

You know, I keep giving these guys a chance in hopes that they will improve. They have not.
I had to clear my throat loudly to entice someone to come from the back to actually help me.
I was in on a Sunday afternoon and while they weren’t busy there were hardly any cupcakes to purchase. I was surprised by the lack of variety despite being there with over 3 hours of business hours left until closing. The two cupcakes I purchased were lemon (for the wife), and a chocolate caramel pretzel combo of some sort. Once I paid for them I was anxious to eat mine.
I got them home and once we had lunch it was time for dessert. My wife tried hers, one bite was all she took to be done. She said it the icing was too sweet and the cake too dry. I felt the same about my mine. Also, the caramel part in the description was not at all present in my cupcake. It really amounted to overly granulated sugary icing with crushed up pretzel bits on top. The frosting had crusted over so it clearly wasn’t fresh. The cake was also dry so it too wasn’t fresh. You are a cupcake place, that only makes cupcakes but you can’t do that well? Clearly, this just doesn’t compute.
Next time, I will save myself from these dry cupcakes and make my own.

A decadent treat for us Gluten-​Free folks!
Frequently pop into this place for dessert after dining at Great Full Gardens (in the same complex). Also anytime I’m downtown and have a hankering for something sweet.
Lots of tasty (not dry) gluten-​free options, with generous (almost too much!) frosting.
Only downside is parking is tough in the tiny lot of this popular complex.
