Tung Shing House

Expensive mediocre chinese family style restaurant.
Don’t even think about it, just make the trek to flushing, elmhurst or Chinatown for cheaper higher quality chinese family style food.
The only thing they have going for them is location and size as it is the largest chinese restaurant in Rego Park.

the peking duck dish was good — they were rolled and served like duck burritos but the skin was crispy and fatty and the duck meat tender. I also liked their fried rice which had raisins and other interesting things in it. Other than that everything was not memorable, and we had at least 8 other dishes.

Nice lg dining room with white tablecloths and cloth napkins. Great sesame chicken not too sweet. Kung po chicken good.

My family and I have been coming here for the past 20 years mostly because Tung Shing serves relatively authentic Chinese food while avoiding the hot mess that is Flushing. The management has changed in the past years, as has the quality of the food. The peking duck and ham in brown sauce are amazing– just as good as the real deal in China!- and are by far the best items on the menu. Everything else is decent, but no different from other Chinese restaurants, where you could get the food for less.
This place was packed on a Sunday evening and filled with both Chinese and non-​Chinese customers. A good sign!

Decent chinese food. If you want to order Peking duck, it takes about 40 minutes so be prepared to wait or refrain from stuffing your face with other dishes beforehand. The duck skin was cut a bit thick so it wasn’t as crispy as I’d like. Also, they use «bing» instead of «bao» which is a plus in my book.
I’m not good with translating dishes (beef with black bean sauce doesn’t mean anything to me) but overall, the food was pretty good.
It’s a big restaurant and very clean. Cleanliness means alot when it comes to Chinese restaurants so that being said, I’d go back and not be afraid to bring my parents.

What an interesting place. The food overall is average but really oily. I could’ve sworn I was sweating oil out. For a chinese restaurant in Queens, it’s decent. It doesn’t stand out much. I’ve driven past this place thousands of times and it never caught my eye. From the outside it looks like a warehouse. Nothing about it says «Come in, my food is good!». The interior really surprised me.
There are lots of Chinese decorations and statues. Even the doorway to their larger seating area is that «asian» round shape… impressive for Queens!
Not all food was oily, the Peking Duck was really good. This is one of the only places that make it properly. Duck skin was completely off the meat. Yes that’s how it’s done. Meat on a separate plate and in a separate bowl of soup.
Why 3 stars off?
1 star off — It was raining cats and dogs that night and water was leaking onto us and onto our table. They didn’t want to move us. We were near finished anyway.
1 star off — I don’t know if the waiter was trying to be funny or not but after we said something about the leaky roof he quickly retorts with «Then go get an umbrella». That really irritated me.
1 star off — Our course consisted of a few dishes and some kind of dessert. The check was brought out to us BEFORE the dessert came out. How tacky is that??!
Tung Shing House, I will continue to drive by you for the rest of my days. I’d favor the MSG loaded pork fried rice down the block over you ANY DAY!
I gave it two stars because the Peking Duck was made properly.

I walked in, and I knew that I was in the right place. The customers were incredibly diverse — tables of three generations of family members with a community meal and bilingual conversations were the majority. I went with a group of friends, which was unusual compared to all of the other families, but I didn’t feel out of place at all.
We had the peking duck dinner for four (not on the regular menu that they handed us — we asked for it, and they had a second menu). The duck was great! I could have done without the other dishes — they were a little greasy and bland, but the duck was fantastic!
Our server was great, too. She had a wonderful personality, and she taught some members of the group how to assemble and to roll their own peking duck.
Overall, I recommend it if you like duck. If you’re looking for sauteed string beans, pan friend noodles, etc. — it’s fine, but I’ve had better.

Best restaurant in the Rego Park area where you can get americanized and more traditional Chinese food. The white meat sesame chicken and pan fried noodles with seafood are delicious. Tung
Shing is perfect for large and small groups and delivery. Service is prompt.

The night we visited this Shanghainese, we swore there were two different chefs with completely different styles working there. The dish would either be EXTREMELY salty or EXTREMELY bland. There was no middle ground. In some vegetable dishes I swore there was absolutely no seasoning because I tasted nothing. The Peking Duck I agree with everyone else is really good. The duck was plump and juicy and the crêpe and the sauce complemented the duck perfectly. The other parts of the duck were made into other parts of the meal like in the soup and sauteed with other vegetables. Again, all were very salty.
For dessert we had Eight Treasure Jewel rice and it was very delicious, although very heavy. Overall the meal was tasty but I just wish it wasn’t so bipolar.

Sometimes I feel like drunken chicken and not necessarily after one too many rounds of liquor. I’m referring to the Shanghai cold appetizer of chicken steeped in rice wine and Tung Shing House offers this and much, much more.
The menu is like a book. It’s probably a few pages short of Cheesecake Factory length and usually such casting the net that wide is bad. (Many an episode of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares comes to mind).
But in the case of Tung Shing House, the menu book can really be seen as an attempt to satisfy two core constituents– those who want authentic Shanghai cuisine and those who want Chinese American food.
And I’m all for inclusion, especially if it means I can have drunken chicken and lo mein on the same menu.
Last night I opted for the singapore noodles and the serving size was enough for four people. Mildly spicy, the vermicelli was bountiful along with the accompanying shrimp and pork strips. Try as I may I could not finish the dish.
At $ 10.95, the price seems high by comparison to other purveyors of Chinese food but at Tung Shing House you’re relaxing at a booth in a rather large restaurant. It’s spacious and the staff was on top of everything.
I especially enjoyed seeing a microcosm of the neighborhood all dining and joined by a love of Chinese food– large tables of Chinese families, old and young, older Russian couples, yarmukles and sweat pants alike, all are welcome.
I’ve read that Tung Shing has been around for quite some time (decades and in a different location). I hope they last for many more.

I’ve been going to this restaurant with my parents since I was in elementary school through numerous management changes, chef changes, and ultimately a sexy-​fying of the restaurant in recent years with a chic renovation and a new sports bar (which can have annoyingly drunk random patrons).
The food is some of the best Chinese in or out of Flushing/​Chinatown. Their Peking Duck has not yet been beaten by any I’ve tasted (except when I was in Beijing), though some places in Chinatown are of equal quality. The ambiance is very nice without the usual dirty or overcrowded feeling you can sometimes get with authentic restaurants. Some of the dishes do have a more western flair than there should be, but never does it destroy the dish just changes it slightly while still being good. I really enjoy almost everything on the menu: drunken chicken, sizzling beef platter, prawn with walnuts, beef chow fun, bring it all on!
The location is right off the 63^rd Drive stop on the R, V, and G train and there is a parking lot around the corner that the restaurant will validate your ticket for. And for the bargain hunters out there, right next door is a Loehmann’s that has a better selection than any other Loehmann’s I’ve seen in the city, just in case you have to wait a while for your dinner companion. Enjoy!

Went to dinner here with friends and wow… Really good drunken chicken, jellyfish and peking duck… MMMMMMMMM!!! Plus we were seated by the windows in the front and our table was separated by rolling walls from the ones next to us so it gave it almost a booth like feel for the privacy it gave.
Peking duck order was put in first since that takes a while then our waiter came back to get the rest. We started off w. the drunken chicken (swimming in alcohol, drunkest chicken I’ve EVER had!) and jellyfish w. sesame oil sauce (LOVE jellyfish!).
We then had the lobster. I’m usually a crab lover instead of lobster (hush!) but this was really tasty. Just the right saltiness… Really good dish! plus it’s well presented :)
Then the peking duck came out, instead of mantao it comes out w. a flat bread for you to roll it in. Duck was perfectly done and was sooooo good with all the fixings. They also made a soup out of the duck bones with clear noodles and veggies/​mushrooms that was really good too. Super stuffed but totally satisfied.
We ended the meal with eight treasures rice pudding. First time eating this and it was really good. Wish my tummy had room for more but I only had a small portion.
Great dinner and we loved everything that came out. We’ve already recommended it to my bf’s parents and we’ll definitely be going back.

The Peking Duck @ Tung Shing is one of the best that I’ve had so far! It’s a MUST to order if you are a fan of ducks. Also, the Sweet & Sour Fish Fillet is pretty good too. However, do not get the Pork Steamed Buns because the skin and meat combination were just awful. I’d rather go to Joe’s Shanghai to eat the Pork Steamed Buns. Overall, I was quite satisfied with the general food and service. Next time, I want to go back to try some of their other CHEF SPECIALS.

I may be a bit biased since my family and I have been coming in here for years. Service is always good as the staff already knows us and knows what we like to order. I’ve never had a problem with anything at Tung Shing. You have a complaint, you can talk it over with the manager and he’ll do what he can to make your stay more pleasant. We’ve had family banquets here, graduation parties, celebrated Chinese New Year, birthdays, etc. I guess because this place is so familiar it feels like home.
Oh, and their Peking duck is excellent.

Okay, time to tackle the infamous Tung Shing House. About 10 years ago, this place is the stuff. Known for their Peaking Ducks, they attract both white and Chinese customers. Due to the vast chinese restaurants in flushing, this restaurant declines in customers both white and Chinese for these past couple of years.
Now, what i hate the most about this restaurant is the racial prejudice. Chinese people must order something on the chinese menu and the whites must order from theirs. You are going to be frowned upon if you order something from the opposite menu. The whites usually get seats in the front of the restaurant and they usually seat the chinese people in the back where it’s the twilight zone. The wait staff are rather cocky in situations that they try to please white people.
The food isnt all that great btw. Everything is starched, fried, heavily sauced. Their rice was hard, dry; meanwhile, their peaking duck was an utter failure. Even the ducks you get in flushing that is exponentially cheaper taste better than this crap. Due to the lack of customers, there is a lack of freshness. I do not recommend anyone to eat here unless, you’re white and you like starchy over sauced chinese food. Everything is also overpriced.
I do not mean to offend anyone if that’s the case, but i’m just trying to make a point. I would not eat here ever again, but if you dont believe me, try it out yourself. =)
I do not recommend this restaurant, however, there is a spectacular Japanese restaurant a block away named Churikan (i think that’s how you spell it. Give it a try, it’s cheap and great!

I was excited to read that a place close to my new apartment serves mock chicken and mock duck. So excited that i made sure it was the first restaurant I tried after signing the lease.
Those choices were only on the cold appetizer list and are prepared ahead of time… cold chicken or duck? kind of unappetizing. So I asked if its possible to take the mock chicken and make a general tso or something fairly easy and common. Nope, no can do. weird.
The scallion pancakes were really good and they do have a longer vegetable entrée list than most places and the restaurant itself is more upscale than your average chinese food place.
They also have Japanese food there and what seems like decent priced lunch specials.
We’ll probably try it again but I cant help but be disappointed with my first attempt.

I’ve come here many times over, distressingly, more than a decade. Everytime, it’s with my relatives and family — we order a lot of dishes e.g. peking duck, prawn w/​walnuts. The waiters put them on the cool wheel thing in the middle, and at that point, when people are still figuring out which direction to turn the wheel, it all looks very good.
Everytime, though, I feel like it just wasn’t that satisfying. Sure the peking duck is okay, but nothing stands out as above-​average. You can do better in Flushing or Chinatown. (More importantly, my mom/​dad/​brother have the same opinion) It’s a nice place to get together with family, but I never remember the food.
