Captain’s

First visit to Captain’s today. I had read some of the reviews and was willing to give a try. I am glad I went. The wait was not bad and I had Marissa as my barber. She was very pleasant and asked a lot of good questions about my last haircut and what I wanted to have done. She did an excellent job with haircut and beard trim. I will definitely be going back!

My Barber dedicated an hour and a half on my hair. He predominantly used clippers and I can honestly say that I’m very pleased with the outcome. Very good at fading with a side parting.

Ruby cuts my son’s hair and she does a good job! His hair looks neat and trendy. He is 4 years old and she is very gentle with him. They provide a booster seat, water, lollipops and coffee. I like this place! Thank you Ruby! Aiden will be back for his next hair cut!

First time today and I’m impressed! I have two boys and have searched everywhere for a place that could cut their hair the right way!
Have to admit that the wait was a bit much, but in the end it was so worth it!
Ruby did an awesome job on my boys and won their trust by having conversations with each of them!
Only downfall, come prepared with cash because that’s all they take!
Found out that Ruby takes appointments on certain days, so that’s a huge plus in my book!
This is certainly the place to get my kids haircuts!

This is the only place that I can trust my hair with. I’ve been to many barber shops around san francisco, and all of them could not give me the precision that the barbers at this shop offer. And my hair is so important to me I get it cut every month! So this is why I still come back to redwood city every month even after I moved to SF. :)

I’ve been coming here religiously for the past two years. They’re a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Michelle has been my go to barber almost the entire time (Amber is also awesome). I’d recommend calling ahead because the place does get busy and there can be a wait. Forget the price and the wait because it’s worth it. Best haircuts on the Peninsula.
This is a skate shop and they have everything you need. If they don’t they’ll order it for you. I ordered a Santa Cruz longboard for my girlfriend and it was ready to pick up at the end of the week.

We’ve been going to Captains for my son’s haircuts for a year now. He will only see Amber. She has been so great with him. He had his ear cut at Super Cuts so he was apprehensive at first to let anyone near him. Amber has been awesome with him. We now make appointments and head to his haircut with no arguing. It’s priceless! His hair is thick and not easy to cut. Amber always does a great job and it grows back nice. That’s how I know it’s a good haircut… no mushroom head. We’ve had a great experience with Amber. From observing all the barbers for a year now I’d say they all are super talented. I highly recommend Captains!

I’ve come several times for a beard trim and they do a great job. Lots of attention to detail and price is great too. I’ll definitely keep coming back.

Marissa helped a 48 year old man get his bucket list of a haircut and shave. Was worth the cost. Try it and you will not be disappointed. I was even able to get a skateboard in the same color as my muscle car.

I wanted to love place but the staff are stuck ups and need people skills. For effin $ 30 a cut ain’t worth a shit. Just a bunch of overpaid pot heads.
I came in for a low fade for my pomp and this lesbian didn’t even know how to do it. To be honest the quality is very lacking. To describe it, it’s probably somewhat what you see on a typical asian salon where the hairstylist does not understand English very well and they’ll cut your hair with their own liking.
Very disappointed at this place.

Upgrading my review to add a star, as someone reached out to me and offered a free do-​over. Although I probably won’t go back for a hair cut, I do appreciate a business that makes an effort to make things right. I’d go back for their stickers and hats though.

I desperately need my bangs trip. I experienced unfriendly staff. They should redo the sign it should say take a look somewhere else.

I drive from San Jose to enjoy Captain’s. Every single Barber in there is a professional of the finest standard. The atmosphere is of old world charm, I can find a piece of every culture I love inside of their doors! My favorite aspect of Captain’s is their wide selection of Heirloom Relic’s jewelry, I would urge anyone looking for an expertly handcrafted piece to seek out Angie’s work.
The perfect balance of the grit and class, old and new, sophisticated and eccentric.

Finally !!! I found my personal favorite barber … Great environment and finally someone who knows how to trim a gentleman properly…

Took my 3 and a half year old son a couple days ago and I’m so grateful I did. I’ve taken my son to get a haircut at many other places, which they always fall short. I either have to deal with it or take him somewhere else to fix the mess. My son has two cowlicks and Amber understood perfectly when I told her I didn’t want it cut too short because if not he would hair sticking out in every direction lol. I told her to do whatever she thought was best for his hair and she did an amazing job. I will for sure continue to bring my son back here! Thank you Amber my son is more handsome than ever!

I don’t normally do these Unilocal reviews but I just got my beard trimmed by Pedro & had a great experience at this shop. Friendly customer service made me feel welcome. Professionalism at it’s best.
There’s nothing like getting a good hair cut/​beard trim after a shitty day. Changed my whole mood. Thanks for the tips on beard oil!

First Unilocal review. Came in at 1:30 and the kind gentleman behind the counter said it would be about 20 minutes. Forty-​five minutes later and its my turn to go, except i am cut in line by who appears to be a friend of the barber. Was told, «i feel bad because you’ve been waiting so long.» I kept my cool and said «no worries,» which i immediately regretted. Waited another 15 minutes and got a decent cut by Ruby. What this place lacks is experience in running a barbershop operation. If you’re appontments only, your friends who need haircuts should follow suit. Don’t kick your customers to the curb like that. 2 stars because this place has potential.

After waiting about 15 minutes, I sat in Leo’s chair. The guy working the store part was really nice and welcoming and he explained the whole process and asked if we wanted anything to drink.
I was a bit nervous about how my hair would look because I usually go to a salon for the whole shampoo, cut, style, etc. experience. When I sat in his chair and told him what I wanted, he said no problem and quickly got to work. He was done so quickly that I wasn’t sure what I’d end up with. At the salon, the stylist uses the whole hour cutting and shampooing and making minor adjustments, but Leo only took about 10 minutes. but when be spun me around I was very pleasantly surprised. He did exactly what I wanted. They have a well curated selection of men’s hair care products too. A great place to get your hair cut!

I normally can’t stand barber shops. My mom had a women’s Coiffeurs beauty salon in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and so my hair was exclusively maintained free of charge by the careful eye of a woman all my life. And I grew up in that environment, drooling over the beautiful women in the glam and gossip magazines, perving on the lingerie photo spreads and learning what I could from the highly educational sexual related editorial, to find out what a woman really wanted. So, I continued that tradition in my adult life, going to salons instead of barbers most of the time because, face it, at a Salon, a potentially beautiful and scented woman spends 30 minutes or so running her hands through your hair, massaging your scalp in the sink, getting close, touching your neck and maybe even giving a little cleavage show if you’re lucky. You talk about personal things to the opposite sex and at it’s best it has a distant hint of a lap dance to it. Ok, I’m exaggerating, but this is the stuff that goes through my mind.
By contrast, your typical barber situation smells like dead wet hair, farts and bug spray. It’s usually not very clean and it can be full of sweaty dudes, talking about mundane bullshit like politics, or the news, or some ridiculous sports team. There’s sticky magazines everywhere and there’s always some crappy sports theme and probably even a wide screen TV belching out some garbage that only works to distract you from your thoughts of serenity and sex, like you’re in some awful frat boys’ man cave from hell where chicks dare not go and have never been. Who wants that?
What Casey and his wife have done with Captains is turned the concept of going to the barber into something COOL and so it changes the whole dynamic of male grooming and it’s enjoyable instead of stinky.
First, look at the layout. It’s all old timey and wood everywhere and it’s clean and though there’s lots of stuff there it’s not cluttered and the front part is a Skate shop or is it a clothing shop or is it just a Whatever Is Totally Cool shop? There’s moto stuff here and there, vintage bicycles over there. There’s cool t-​shirts. There’s art. And there’s stuff for men and women and it’s displayed well and you can’t walk past this place in downtown Redwood City and not go, wow, this place is cool!
And it makes total sense to mix a skate shop with a barber because back in my day Skater dudes were always the dudes with the absolute best hair cuts all the time. Skaters were always on the cutting edge of hair style trends.
The staff are covered in tattoos and there’s cute women who work there too. When you walk in every one is always chill and friendly without being overly friendly and uppity. While you wait for a chair to free up from one of the raunchy looking barbers you get to sit in some really comfortable leather chairs and just look around at all the cool stuff. Or, pick up one of the rad magazines and look at all the naked women in DICE magazine or VICE and enjoy a beer or other beverage if you drink. This place is fun.
Then, when you’re getting your cut, the barbers are cool too and they either ask you real questions and dig into your life, or don’t talk at all and just let you meditate in your space, or you might hear them chatting some hardcore barber lingo about some score for some desirable barber tools like shavers or razors or shears or whatever weapons they use. When they talk about this stuff, you’ll have no idea what they’re talking about because it’s all in barber-​speak code, unless you have been to barber school yourself. They’ll say stuff like «yea, I was down in San Mateo in some place I couldn’t even tell if it was the right place or anything but I just walked in and she had a tray there with them all laid out and there was an E10 and a 5-​star for good prices too.» And they’ll talk about that for 20 minutes and you have no idea what they are saying.
No one talks about politics or other garbage. They talk about cool stuff: bikes, skateboards, work, school, girl friends, hair, tattoos, food, cooking, beer, bikes, motos, women, places to go, travel, dreams, plans.
The cuts are always great too. You walk out feeling confident and hip. Since I started getting my hair cut at Captain’s I’ve noticed a dramatic increase in the positive reaction of women to my personal appearance. Chicks are digging me way more than before I had my hair cut at Captains, that is for sure. So there’s a bonus there.
This is Captains and we’re lucky to have this place in Redwood City.
