Rocky Point

I’ve always wanted to go kayaking and my cousins finally found a great spot! The people running the business (Caylin and Mateo) were happy to help and teach us how to kayak! The cousins and I were going around the dock and almost out to the beach for about 2 hours, and we couldn’t get enough. We flipped a couple of times but the life vests worked fine. It was a fun experience and we all got shoulder workouts from paddling for so long haha!

It had been a topic of conversation for awhile and we were waiting for the perfect day to go Kayaking so last Sunday came and we made it happen.
Some of the reviewers are right, this location is deep into the marina and a bit tough to find but nothing you can’t find without your GPS or asking a bit. Redondians are friendly! I would know ;o)
So, we came ready and prepared. Some tips I recommend:
**Bring comfortable clothes you’re okay with getting wet; You WILL get soaked.
I mean besides the kayak paddle bringing in water into your vessel there are small holes in the kayaks (Also known as Scupper holes, may be found in the cockpit, foot wells and tank well of kayaks. These holes are self-​bailing which means any water coming over the deck of the kayak will automatically drain out) I can bet you $ 100 your underwear will be drenched. Haha. It’s part of the adventure.
**Depending on the weather, consider wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, protective wear etc.
**As for electronics you wanna take on board, make sure it’s waterproof. LifeProof case on phone, GoPro highly recommended! I brought mine, It came in super handy! The attendant will gladly hold on to your vehicle’s battery powered key and other stuff you don’t wanna take on.
**Be ready for a workout! (Best part of it too). This may also depend on how fast or far you wanna kayak too. If you stay in the harbor, (quieter waters) it’ll be chill, out in the ocean well, the waters get more movement also depending on the swell. Either way, a healthy thing!
They do issue you a floating vest that isn’t required to be used but must be on your vessel at all times.
My boyfriend and I really enjoyed ourselves overall; hung out in the middle of the ocean, took tons of pics, raced across the Harbor and checked out all the boats all for approximately two hours. We would recommend this location and most deff consider renting with this company again.

My cousins invited me to go kayaking on a Sunday because I have not seen them in a while & they were beginning to worry about me. I dragged the bf along & asked a Unilocal bud & her hubby to join me but sadly they could not.
This place is not all that easy to find so pay attention. Go in by Sea Side Lagoon & go straight. Go to the guard & tell him you’re going to Rocky Point & they will let you in. NO CHARGE! Then go straight & turn right at the end which will take you right to Rocky Point. Park & get out. They have lots of FREE parking. Woohoo!
We walked in & my cousins are already there & had just finished signing up. There was a large meetup group there as well. As I was signing up I over heard someone say they there had been some whale sightings the last few weekends so now I was UBER EXCITED! I had never seen a whale aside from the ones on TV, Sea World or the big screen like Free Willy.
The bf had his own kayak so once we were all paid & signed up we all went down to the little dock & were given our kayaks & paddles. If you didn’t have a PFD they have them for you. You are not required to wear them but they MUST be on your boat/​SUP or you’ll get a ticket. The OC doesn’t have theses silly rules. I hear the fines are about $ 500 smackers.
One by one we each got our kayak & Legg’s loaded in last since he already had his own personal kayak. We were set & started out kayaking. The water was a little choppy going out but calmed down once you passed all the breaks & got passed the surf. But NOTHING that is AT ALL SCARY. One of the guides for the meetup came to ask us & said we could follow him out to where the whales were supposed to be which was about 45 minutes out from shore.
Tons of SUP’ers, kayakers & boaters were heading out to see the whales. It was GREAT because should any smaller water craft have any issues there was someone nearby that could be of assistance. After a while we saw a large flock of birds & people so we figured that must be where the whales were. We continued to paddle out, resting in between until OMG I saw a whales back & fin! We all went faster & faster to hurry & get there BEFORE they left! Then we saw another fin & another & another until GLORY-​BE we were there & everyone was taking vids & pics.
The MOST AHHHH-​MAZING sight ever. At one point I think we were all a bit too close because one popped up about 25 yards or less from me & FREAKED me out… but in a GOOD WAY! I had chills! I was snapping pics like a mad woman. SNAP, SNAP, SNAP, SNAP… but first let me take selfie. It was GREAT! We were paddling out further & further as the pod of whales move so did we…

TOTALLY AWESOME! There were several dolphin pods & seals all over because of the fish the whales were eating. At one point one seal got in the way of the whale & the whale had the seal in its mouth but spit him out. I think he got injured but there was so much going on we didn’t see the seal afterwards.
After we all had our fill of the wild life we paddled back but NOT before I got a few more group shots to remember the day using my selfie stick & then it happened… A bump of my elbow with a stray paddle & my phone took a swan dive off my selfie stick & into the deep blue sea, the Pacific Ocean, went to go visit Nemo & Sponge Bob. I was freaking out! All but 3 pics I had JUST texted to my aunt were ALL GONE! WHHHHYYYYYY!

But the screaming was so noisy that the whales could hear my cry
All I have are the wonderful memories of that day & a few pics.
This place is GREAT if you’re looking to do some ocean kayaking & get out the safety of the inlets. The entire process is SUPER EASY & they are fairly cheap with rental ONLY $ 12.50 an hour. Plus they also have SUP’s for rent.
PS bring a camera that floats or get a camera PFD!

The people who work here are chill and we had a great time kayaking on a gorgeous day ! :-)

Great prices and an easy going atmosphere. The owner/​operater is very nice and I enjoy how the rental office has water and snacks. I will rent kayaks from Rocky Point again.

After an hour of relaxing paddle boarding with my girlfriend, on my way back to the dock, all I heard is a crazy woman yelling «get down on your knees NOW» I said «I’m gonna fall in the water if I do at this movement, give me a second» then she yelled again «who cares, get down on your knees right now» WTF???
Oh and Ryan is really nice, cute and sweet. 3 stars for him.

They let you drink in the kayak!
This was my second time renting with this company. They are very laid back and seem like they are getting more and more popular. I HIGHLY recommend using this company. They are away from the touristy crowds at the pier. I always have a wonderful time chillin in the middle of the Pacific with great friends and brewskys (which they ALSO sell!) =D

This is the 7 – 11 of fuel purveyors in the area for recreational boaters or cruisers. Always there, but you’ll pay a convenience premium for fuel (diesel or gas) relative to LA Harbor. Only place more expensive would be Catalina, and not by much.
They look like they do a good commercial business too (Foss, various government, concessions).
All the usual stuff (ice, et cetera) is here too. Nice people.

I came here to skiff fish with my grandfather long ago and it used to be the hot spot. The skiff used to go out really fast in the morning but… well here it goes.
I came here with my fishing buddies one summer day. On time, when the store was suppose to be open. We waited about 30 mins. Lucky, some of my buddies were running late. This place is very hard to find, had to go all the way inside the parking lot and its at the end. Well, after 30 mins some kid shows up and opens the shop. As we were getting the skiff rentals I ask for local advice, «so, hows the fishing lately?» He answers,“huh what? I donno. I don’t fish that much.” I thought to myself. smart guy… I wasn’t asking for his opinion. I was asking if other people were doing good or not. I also looked throu out the store, was not well stocked for fishing nor anything else. He finally got us out to some old junky skiff. He was first having a hard time turning it on. Then he told us we can’t fish in the part of the bay were the boats are landed. (Thats were all the fish hide.) so we had to go out side into the open bay to fish. As we fished for 3 hrs. (no fish) the motor died, so we went back using the ore to repair the boat. After 20 mins of trying to fix the motor he brings out a new boat so we could continue fishing. The after another 3 hrs or so we got one Blue perch (aka junk fish). Don’t get me wrong. I know how to bay fish. Just this experence was the far most worst I have ever been through.
Fishermans beware. Don’t waste your money on the Skiff. Just fish off the rocks, the chances are just the same or even better.

Laid back service. They don’t give you any directions or guidelines, but hey answer any questions you may have. Can’t expect much service from teenagers.
Very secluded place to rent which makes it awesome. It was a beautiful day yesterday. It was our first time kayaking so we didn’t venture out past the bay, but we will next time.
Saw a lot of sea lions and crabs. Beautiful boats.
$ 25 for a single for 2 hours, $ 35 for a double.
I will definitely go back.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to get very close to the marine life. Saw bunch of seals crabs and fish. Water visibility is pretty good here. Enjoy the ocean scenery very much.
Price is better than other kayaking shops close by. $ 35 for two ppl kayaking for two hours.
The rocky point is behind an oceanview private resort. Drive on Breyl all the way down, pass a main gate, get in the resort, and pass another gate, then it’s right there. Cause the location is kinda hidden, i feel more exclusive to kayak here.
But don’t forget to bring towls and changing clothes cause kayaking will definitely get u wet and there is no shower room to clean up. U don’t want to mess up ur car with salty water after having so much fun.

This is about renting a kayak there (sit on top) and taking it out past the bay break to paddle along the beach, going south towards Palos Verdes. It’s much harder riding when the tide is high, didn’t get very far after an hour out, then we paddled an hour back. But it’s scenic (though over cast the day we went) and one day, we’ll make it to the cove.
