Janie and Joe’s Cuts for Kids

Nice place and very happy customer! My 2 ½ toddler HATES hair cuts but at Janie’s and Joe’s Cuts for Kids he surprisedly did good! This place is super kid friendly & we were in & out in 20 mins! Happy toddler = happy mommy!

I took my 4-​month old daughter here for a trim and had a great experience. The store itself is clean and inviting, both on the inside and outside. It is very child-​friendly, with a play area for toddlers, and a safety gate at the front door to prevent children from running out. I had made an appointment, and didn’t have to wait at all when I arrived (it wasn’t a busy time of the day, however). The staff are super-​friendly, and knew how to handle my daughter well, at least at keeping her from getting fussy. Cathy did the actual haircut, which she did quickly and satisfactorily. Thanks to Cathy and the staff!

My 13 month old daughter just had her first haircut (which was hard for my husband haha) and Cathy did a fantastic job. I’m not going to lie, I was a bit nervous about my daughter sitting still but we had no issues. Cathy and her assistant are great with kids and our daughter felt completely comfortable. Her assistant placed my daughter in her own personal toy car chair and put on nursey rhymes, which my daughter loved. Cathy cut her hair quickly and the cut turned out great. They saved us her first cut locks for our keepsake box at home. They also provide a play area and toys for the kiddos which really helps. We’ll definitely be returning! Thank you ladies!

Went today for my son’s first haircut and it went great. I was taken in early, parking was practically empty and both Cathy and her assistant were super nice. She was quick and good. Her assistant kept him entertained but after the first 10 seconds he started crying. Will be going again for sure! They charge $ 20 with tip included. Great place. Very happy.

They do NOT honor appointments, which is the very reason why we decided to try Janie and Joes since Snip-​Its only does walks-​in. As parents know waiting with a toddler is not always the easiest and time is not something we readily have all the time.
We really wanted to like Janie and Joes since from the pictures it looks pretty awesome with cool cars the kids get to sit in and they accept appointments but upon getting there my husband and I should’ve known it wasn’t going to be pretty.
First off, its located near a liquor store. Secondly, when we got there the place reeked of nail polish, because supposedly they also do nails in the small area it is situated. To make matters worse, there was no air conditioning just a fan so as you can imagine it was pretty toasty in there especially in the summer. Yet, my husband and I thought since we have an appointment it will be quick. The receptionist who took our call/​appointment was very nice and told us to come 15 mins early so we did and after 30 mins of waiting and realizing there were still 3 kids in front of our son we decided to leave since it was almost time for his dinner time and we didn’t have an hour to wait which was crazy since the receptionist told us to come early. If we came any earlier we would’ve just waited longer! As we left she said sorry and said she tried to fit everyone in which is nice but it not cool if you make an appointment and they don’t honor it.
The next day we decided to go to Snip-​its again but instead of going there during noon we went right when it opened and to my surprise it only took 15 minutes in and out. I actually went there a little early and Snip-​Its just let me in and started the haircut 5 mins before the doors even opened. My son got a toy afterwards and his hair looked awesome. From now on I’ll be taking my son to Snip-​its for his haircut. It is $ 3 more, but time is of the essence when you are a parent you don’t time to wait for hours for a haircut that should have taken at most 15 mins.

Cathy is incredible! Is she patient with overly sensitive toddlers? YES! Can she be fast and accurate with haircuts when needed? YES! Does she fix bad haircuts caused by other people? YES!!! We love going to Cathy because she’s so compassionate and of course, has an adorable kid-​friendly salon. Everything she does is to cater to her little clients and her passion for what she does really shows. Thanks, Cathy!

Our fussy 19 month old was entertained and loved his experience at Janie & Joe’s. He enjoyed it so much that he didn’t want to leave the shop! Not a single tear from the children ahead of us or from my own toddler. We absolutely, highly-​recommend this shop. Cathy and her assistants are experienced and great with children. I am thoroughly impressed. His cut cost $ 20 flat. No tip expected or accepted. Amazing convenience. The only thing missing is a drive-​thru feature. LOL

Hmm… We’ve been to see Cathy twice for boy haircuts and I’ve been on the fence about returning both times. The MB salon we used to go to regularly closed so we’ve been looking for a replacement. Saw that this place has 100+ reviews at 5 stars.
First, the haircuts are quick and while that may be just fine for my little one who is actually pretty good at sitting sit, the quality of haircut itself suffers (no careful double checking). It’s pretty obvious stuff to notice. For example, there were stray hairs in the back that were not buzzed. His neck had areas that needed to be cleaned up. The grade of the cut was off, making an awkward transition between the sides of the head and the longer hair on the top. It took so long to fix that my husband wondered why I just didn’t do the whole cut myself.
Second, the front office has no policy re time management. Folks way ahead of us showed up egregiously late. They were still squeezed in. This meant that other folks ahead of us had to wait 45 min before they got their turn (patience of Mother Freaking Theresa). We waited 35 min past our scheduled time.
Cathy was cutting as fast as possible and making up time. While some appreciate that — maybe I’m a big bad guy — I just wished we started as scheduled and we could have had 5 more minutes of Cathy’s time so we can get a more mindful cut.
MINDFUL. I think that is the key word. It was a factory here, moving constantly and churning cuts out one after another. Our previous stylist would ask what she needed to know up front (eg tell her about the cowlick, the funny swirl or where the scalp has a divot) and then ask for input mid-​cut. I really MISS that. Cathy asked what we wanted. We said a #3 in the back and a clean up of the top with special attention re the grade and swirl. We got a #2 in the back and some unevenness. :/​
When she we finished, Cathy asked how things looked. But it was more of a ‘tada, I’m done and have 5 seconds left to address one thing so tell me what it is and I’ll walking away.
It’s just a buzz.’ I kept hearing the lady at the front use this phrase for boys in line for short cuts. She was trying to explain away the wait time for patrons still awaiting their turns. Perhaps that should have clued me in. Boys’ short cuts are considered quickie buzzes while girls get more attention? Super irritated Grrr…
The waiting area is nice and bright with lots of toys. The hair cutting area had stray hair on the floor, chairs and car chairs but was being swept periodically by little helpful hands. There are 2 small TVs kids can watch DVDs as they have their cuts. Bathroom in the rear. Plenty of parking in the lot.
PRICE CHANGE. Haircut price is now $ 20 and no tip accepted per the posted sign. Used to be $ 15 plus tip. CASH ONLY.
There are few options for nice kids’ cuts in the South Bay and I hope we find a place that can cut my son’s hair more like a salon vs a supercuts. Maybe this is the place and we just got in at bad times. And maybe I’m giving in cause I can’t find a better solution. I’m clearly still mulling this over… Very conflicted…

I am so in love with my sons first haircut. Cathy did an amazing job. Her assistant was really nice as well. We felt welcomed we will be going back for sure.

This place was a little far for me to drive for a haircut but because of the great reviews we went ahead and made the trek. It was totally worth it! Cathy and her assistant were great with my 17 month old son. So gentle and calm. You can tell that this is her profession, as she is extremely patient and caring towards the little ones. Great play area for before and after the cut! I will be coming back for sure to see Cathy! Great place for a kids cut!

My 13 month old son was in desperate need of a haircut and I was in denial! But I finally realized I have to get it done so my poor baby could see and stop being confused for a girl. Janie and Joe’s is located right in my neighborhood, in fact we walked over there, and so it was a no-​brainer to chose this spot for his haircut. Especially with the great reviews on Unilocal.And the reviewers did not lie. It was really nice that they had a little spot with toys for my son and 3-​year old to play while waiting for his haircut.
The stylist shares the place with a few other people but on the day we went it was just kids haircuts. They are open until 6, but closed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. They were very patient with us as my husband was rushing to be there and totally understood that it was important for us to have him there. There are two car type seats for the kiddos to sit on while they get their haircut and there is a monitor with kiddie shows for them to watch while they get their haircut. She spent about 15 minutes on my son and did a great job. He was very calm and easy to manage throughout the whole cut — his personality generally. But I think the environment would help soothe even a difficult child while getting their haircut. She also saved some of his hair and put it in a baggie for me without me having to ask. He looked like a little man and was super cute.
We were very happy with our experience and will definitely be back when he needs another trim!

We took our 8 month old to get his 1^st haircut and loved it!!! He definitely needed it because everyone kept referring him as a girl!
Place was entertaining for him. Cathy was nice and gentle, yet worked so fast! We were totally prepared for the worst, but our little one didn’t cry at all! Totally amazing job because he was so handsome! She saved a lock of his hair (which i didn’t even think to ask for)!
Will definitely be booking an appt with Cathy again soon :)

I brought my 2 year old daughter here to have her hair cut for the first time and it was such a great experience. Cathy really knows what she is doing and is great with kids (of course with 9 grandkids of her own its to be expected) my little monster was a little fussy once she started but Cathy has so much patience and cut my babies hair while I was holding her. All in all I highly recommend this salon for kids of all ages, it’s such a fun place for kids to go and be pampered and best of all the price is perfect, can’t wait to bring her back in 6 months for a touch up!!!

My 12month old boy got his first hair cut here and it was awesome, granted he wasn’t cranky coz he just woke up from his nap. But he usually hates ppl touching his head but she did a great job, was quick and efficient. Haircut done in less than 10mins and styled it exactly how we wanted it from the pic we showed her.
$ 22 is definitely a reasonable price. They even gave him a certificate for his first haircut and gave me the first snippets of his hair in a small envelope without me asking.

I had a pretty good experience with my son’s first professional haircut.
Kathy is clearly an expert. During my 45 minutes at the salon, she completed 4 haircuts. I think they allocate 15 minutes a cut, so I did have to wait 15 minute past my appt time, but it wasn’t a big deal.
The staff really know how to pacify kids! The waiting area is a playroom equipped with ipads and lots of different types of toys. My son was in heaven. Also, during his haircut, he had a Tv in front of him, and an ipad even closer to him.
The cut was completed fairly quickly, which is all you can do with a 1 year old who is wondering what the heck is happening to his head and fidgeting around. He’s 1 and doesn’t have a ton of hair, but it looked good and was even styled with baby hair product. :)
Will definitely be here for regular hair cuts.

I took my 17 month old here for his first haircut. Everybody was so amazing & friendly. The stylist & her assistant were total pro’s and handled my son so well! My poor baby did cry but I was able to hold him while she cut his hair. This is the only place I will trust with touching my sons hair!
Its easy to see why they have 5 stars. :)

Fast forward 5 years and Cathy is still the only one who I’d trust to cut my kids’ hair. Our new addition, a little boy who is always on the move, is able to sit just long enough for her to cut his naturally long hair and she does such an adorable job! My 3 kids and I love her new space in Redondo and hope to be coming here for years to come!

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE! From the moment we walked in we were greeted with warm genuine smiles. The place is a kids dream, so much to entertain them while they wait.
My husband and I were looking for a place to have our baby boys first haircut and came across this place! Cathy and her staff are amazing and she did such a great job! Considering the fact that our little one is 5 months, Cathy’s staff had him entertained the entire time and saved a few snippets of his hair for us! As we left, we couldn’t stop talking about how great of an experience that was for us and thiago! We have found our new spot for thiago for years to come!

We took our son here for his very 1^st haircut and we couldn’t have been happier! All of the toys they have in the waiting area kept him occupied until it was his turn. And he was so excited to sit in the little race car and watch the Elmo movie that I had picked out from their DVD selection, that he didn’t even really notice he was getting his hair cut.
The staff was very friendly and Cathy did a great job cutting his long curly hair. They were even prepared with a little baggie for us to save a lock of his hair. We will definitely be going back for his next cut.

We have known about Cathy way back when Citymommy was a website. The owner sent out an email blast informing all the moms of her incredible friend who was moving to Manhattan Beach and that she was great at kids haircuts. At the time, my daughters hair never grew. So we never even needed any haircuts. But I told several friends and they all raved about the haircuts their sons received.
Fast forward a few years, I now take my son there. He is VERY shy and takes an enormous amount of time to feel comfortable around any new person. Cathy was GREAT and so patient. Not only that, but we got a wonderful haircut. Which seems impossible considering the amount of squirming he did. And that he didn’t want to sit in the typical barber chair. No problem. She let him sit in one of those little kid chairs. You know the ones that are 2″ high. Yeah those ones.
She ended up cutting his hair in that chair. No other salon would do that. Five stars all the way. Oh yeah, and kids get a lollipop at the end. They love going now!
