We provide one on one tutoring with a personal touch. All tutoring sessions are based on the goals of the student. Tutors employ various methods to teach to the learning style of each student. Success is dependent upon fostering a relationship between the tutor and student. The tutor will be able to help the student achieve their goals best if meetings are consistent. The tutor will be current with the student’s work and be able to chart the progress of the student towards the accomplishment of the specific goals. All tutors hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, have experience teaching and tutoring and have excellent references from former students. We offer in home tutoring throughout the South Bay of Los Angeles in the following areas: all levels of mathematics and science, reading comprehension, writing and grammar, SAT and ACT preparation, time management, study and organizational skills, Spanish, homework help, GRE preparation, GED preparation.

History

Established in 2001.

Expanding Abilities Tutoring was founded in 2001 as a private tutoring company servicing students in the South Bay of Los Angeles primarily Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Melissa Haueter began working with Expanding Abilities Tutoring in 2003 as a private tutor in math and science. In 2005, she became the director of Expanding Abilities Tutoring and the following year she became the owner. In the following years, Expanding Abilities Tutoring helped many students and families to reach their scholastic goals. Melissa Haueter continues to service the community by offering free telephone consultations for parents and students to assist them in making the best choices on the path to reaching their goals. Melissa also employs the most qualified tutors with the greatest abilities to teach using various modalities. All tutors have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and excellent tutoring references from former students.

Melissa began tutoring twenty years ago. This is her tenth year with Expanding Abilities Tutoring where she is the director. Melissa is a natural teacher and teaching is what she loves to do. She also relates well with young people having spent time as a camp counselor, recreation leader, driver’s education teacher, and gymnastics instructor.

Melissa earned her Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from UCLA. Upon completion of her degree, Melissa participated in an internship at the SEA Laboratory in Redondo Beach where marine biology was taught to inner-​city youth. Melissa became the director of Expanding Abilities Tutoring in January of 2005. She also held the position of Faculty Math Tutor at Marymount College in Rancho Palos Verdes from the Fall semester of 2006 until the birth of her daughter, Alison, in January 2010. She has now dedicated the majority of her time to working with Expanding Abilities Tutoring’s students and tutors to promote learning in the South Bay.
