History

Established in 1948.

In 1948, Silas and Al Ackroyd opened Ackroyd’s Meat Market in downtown Detroit, where they sold savory Scottish goods, such as meat pies and sausage rolls, pastries and breads.

As demand grew for their Scottish goods throughout the 1960s, the brothers moved the bakery to its current Redford location. In 1977, the bakery welcomed the next generation of family into the bakery as Allan Ackroyd, Al’s’ son, joined as a bakery manager.

In the late 2000’s, the family decided for the bakery to expand its reach and make its authentic Scottish food available to a wider audience through two new routes– wholesale in grocery stores and mail-​order shipping of the Scottish baked goods.



In 2010, following in her grandfather’s and father’s footsteps, Allan’s daughter Megan joined the family bakery.

Now with 3 generations involved in Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery, the business is ever-​growing and expanding. it will remain dedicated to providing quality products and unmatched value.

Business Owner

Allan is a man passionate about his family’s business. He’s been in business with his father for over 30 years and has recently had his daughter join them. Though he’s never tried it, he probably knows how to bake Scottish goods in his sleep!

His commitment to keeping the family business alive for so many years is rooted in its customers. The fresh baked goods from Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery are a part of many families traditions, passed down with each generation. Allan wants to help keep these traditions going for more generations to come. He also loves turning new customers on to Ackroyd’s delicious Scottish baked goods.

When he isn’t at the bakery, Allan is likely golfing, enjoying time with his family and dogs, watching MSU sports, or just relaxing by a lake with a pint in hand.
