History

Established in 1997.

In 1990 the Alliance of Redding Musuems was formed, bringing together The Redding Museum of Art & History, The Forest Museum, The Carter House Natural Science Association and the Redding Arboretum. Over the next decade, they set out to fundraise and design a single 300 acre complex focusing on sustainability and the blending of natural science, art, forestry, humanities and human ecology. In 1997 Turtle Bay Exploration Park opened its doors as Phase I of construction was completed with the building of Paul Bunyan’s Forest Camp and the Boardwalk over the Wetlands. In 2000, Phase II is completed as the Turtle Bay Visitor Center opens. In 2002, Phase III, the Turtle Bay Museum opens its doors. In 2004, Santiago Calatrava’s magnificient Sundial Bridge is complete and in 2005, Phase IV, the last part of the campus, the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardnes opens to the public.
