Liberty’s Restaurant & Lounge

The service was adequate, though it’s nothing to write home about. The food was good, and the restaurant was in a Victorian storefront, but other than that, it’s quite boring. The music playing is just Muzak, which is a big no-​no for somebody like me.

My husband, myself, and my married daughter went to Liberty ’ s to eat. What an experience it was! My husband ordered the shrimp dinner for 22 dollars. The shrimp came and it was flat and the shrimp was bits and pieces that you receive in a shrimp basket at a fast food place. Then, it was deep fried and so crunchy and hard. you could hear him eat. I ordered Alfredo with chicken. I couldn’t cut the chicken. The sauce was aawful. No taste, at all. No garlic or seasonings. Our waitress said there had been complaints about that dish the night before. The two pieces of garlic toast were old and hard. I told the gal to take it off our bill. My daughter ordered a sandwich that was burned and uneatable. She had it taken off the bill. By this time we thought we were on Candid Camera! The potatoes my husband ordered we the cheese potatoes. Usually, their cheesy potatoes are good but these were awful. No taste, dry, and was that cheese? We were unsure. We were laughing by this time. They must really be cutting corners. How sad. This is a second generation restaurant and first owners, Lee and Dorothy would be mortified if food like this was ever served to his loyal patrons. From from reading reviews it seems as if there’s good days with decent/​good food. Being from Red Wing we are going back to see if we hit one of those good days and use our gift certificate ! Let you know…

Average food. Sometimes the staff is really good. their pasta buffet is excellent since everything is made fresh and custom. Their desserts are good if fresh, fresh is the key many have been in a refrig too long so I know longer order them. Liberty’s looks like it needs a remodeling, the place is a bit rough. I think breakfast is what they do best.

We order delivery from here often. Always exactly what we expect. Wonderful food and service. Last week 2 pizza places wouldn’t deliver because of the snow that was falling. Called here and they were happy to get up our hill. Usually order steak, chicken, and/​or breakfast. The pizza and Alfredo last week was very good.

Asked the waitress what she recommended. .“anything buffalo” Best wings I’ve ever had (crispy and awesome sauces). And very good buffalo chicken pizza. Will be back!

I’ve only ordered delivery from Liberty’s so I can’t speak to the restaurant experience. At my workplace, we’ve ordered Liberty’s pizza on all of my trips to Red Wing.
After trying several pizzas, I have to say that the «plain» cheese is their best work. I’m not a fan of the square slices, but the cheese is rich and the crust is flavorful. Delivery is also really fast — about 25 minutes after ordering.

We went to Liberty’s for a big group holiday dinner. It was fantastic. We preferred the chicken dinner for everyone and they each got to choose broasted or grilled. The dinner came with a roll, salad (outstanding house dressing), green beans, au gratin potatoes, and chicken. Best holiday party in years!

Great Mimosas! Breakfast was very good! Our server was very friendly and attentive.

We had to fish tacos and pepperoni pizza. The food was fine and well prepared. The service was underwhelming, we had to ask several times for refills of soda. She never checked in on how our meal was.

This is a cute restaurant in a cute town. My wife and I were there in the middle of the afternoon looking for something to eat, and something to drink. We walked into a few places, (like the hotel on the other side of the street), but nothing really sparked us. We’d been in Minnesota for a week, and, in that time, we’d already had our fill of pizza. We just wanted something more like how we regularly eat at home, and we found it here. It’s difficult to eat in Minnesota if you don’t want bland, you don’t want meat, and you don’t want cheese.
We decided on the Caesar Salad, the Liberty Signature Grilled Cheese Sandwich, (sans the bacon), and the Vegetable and Dill Dip. We were very pleased with out choices.
The Vegetable and Dill Dip was just what we needed. The veggies were all fresh, crisp, and lovely. The Dill Dip was the best we’d ever had anywhere.
The Caesar Salad was unlike any other we’d ever had. For one thing, we’d never had a Caesar with red onions and black olives on it before, but it worked. The salad really hit the spot, the Caesar dressing was excellent, and we actually liked the little extras thrown in.
Finally, the Grilled Cheese Sandwich. I guess some people like bacon on their grilled cheese, or in their Mac-​n-​Cheese, but we don’t. The restaurant gladly left the bacon off on ours. This sandwich doesn’t need the bacon to be great. It flies all by itself. I absolutely loved the cracked wheat bread. It was the best breat, and the best sandwich I had the entire time I was in Minnesota.
To top it off, the Bloody Mary was great, the server/​bartender, (we ate at the bar), was very nice, and we loved the history of the building. The history is not unlike the history of many other, similar places, but I always like to hear it. This place is called Libertys because it was founded the same year the Nation was celebrating it’s 200 year anniversay. It was also the year I was graduating from high school. Yeah, I’d go back here again, and I’d sit in the bar area, or at the bar where it is more open, and there is more room to move around. This place ended up being a very good, satisfying choice for dining, and it made our trip to Red Wing, Minnesota just that much better

I have not been to this place in years and recently became reacquainted with it because we were in the middle of moving and hauling stuff up and down the road and I needed some straight up comfort food which I thought they used to have more of on the menu. They still have amazing pie… the pie deserves it’s own star rating because it was absolutely delicious. I had the french silk – highly recommend. I ended up ordering a grilled cheese because they did not have the hot turkey or roast beef sandwich on the menu that I was hoping for. My husband had chili and raved on and on about it. He described it as sweet, spicy, and smokey. Said it was possibly the best he has ever had… other than mine of course! This is a very large older bar and they have a ton of cycle stuff out for decoration if your into cycles.

Exactly what you’d expect from a longstanding, small town restaurant and more.
It was sincerely the best pizza I’ve ever eaten. Taco salad completely adequate and I’d order it again. Service was amazing… helpful, nice to kids, familiar with beer list and breweries. Not sure why we ate anywhere else during our visit to Red Wing?!
We’ll drive from the Twin Cities to eat that Pizza again… the menu is almost too huge. Tons of options.

This place is a dirty dump. I’ve been there 3 times now and it is progressively getting worse.
Last night my pizza was soggy (I had asked for thin and crisp) and the bar area had an obnoxious and loud patron intent on winning at a pull-​tab game. Never again!

While roaming the streets of Red Wing to find a place to eat, I do what every self-​respecting Unilocaler does: not ask the locals where to eat, but pull Unilocal.
I find a place within walking distance to the St James, so I mosey on over. (Red Wing seems like the kind of place where I can use that word) The menu looked good, but then I spy this fun-​looking restaurant across the street: Liberty’s Restaurant and Lounge.
So I pull it up on the Unilocal app, and to my surprise, I see Brian R had left a review last year. It was so detailed, I felt like I was at dinner with his family. (Check out his review) As if his solid review wasn’t enough for me, I send him a text, including a picture, asking if I should mosey on into the Liberty. (Where’s my cowboy hat?) He told me he’d go back, and his word is good enough for me.
I check out the menu, and then I got a little worried. Liberty’s has one of those menus that is very extensive, from cheese curds, to egg rolls, to prime rib. Chef Ramsey says not to do that on ‘Kitchen Nightmares’. But again, Brian’s a man of his word. That word, of course, is AYCE. (Okay, that’s four words)
One stand-​out feature of Liberty’s is the entire staff is so friendly! That added two stars to my review even before I had any food. I mentioned Brian’s word is AYCE. I’m all over that as well. Wednesday night is AYCE build your own pasta bar. How could you go wrong with that?
It came with a bowl of soup (Chicken Dumpling was awesome. Had to be home made), and as many trips as you want. Three sorts of pasta, lots of fresh toppings, and the lady chef was so friendly. The other fun thing to watch were all the regulars coming in and how my server knew their names. My server, by the way, was helpful and of course, friendly. I’m overusing that word, but it works.
While I wimped out with only one-​and-​a-​half trips, they were good ones. I’m guessing that Red Wing isn’t a gastric mecca, but this meal hit the spot and was fresh.
Like Brian, I’d go back to try something else. Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll have an AYCE taco bar. But then again, they serve breakfast all day. Mmmm.

Our experience was poor. We did have a large table, but our waiter didn’t didn’t receive help from his coworkers, and the manager on duty threw the waiter under the bus when we complained. (hint: that’s really bad management!)
I’m not likely to come back here even with a small group.

Stay away!!! Service=horrible. Waitress grabbed menu out of my mom’s hand. Also, she had a permanent look of distain on her face. It took 20 minutes for her to take our order after we put our drinks in… Food took 30 – 40 minutes after we finally ordered. Food=cardboard taste. Basically, they threw everything in vat of grease and called it a day. Restaurant was poorly lit and very dirty, the type of place you leave with your clothes tainted with with a nasty odor. As I write this review, I’m feeling as if I might have a bout of food illness coming on… Never again and I hope this helps other people to avoid such an unfortunate fate. :(((

Liberty’s catered my wedding and I could not be more happy! From the first meeting Doug knew exactly how to proceed with us and gave us the best options to choose from, making the decision making process a snap.
We were still a little uncertain of our final count even a few weeks before the big day but it was never an issue for Liberty’s. The answer was always «no problem, we got you covered.»
Finally when our wedding day arrived everything went absolutely PERFECT! The food was spectacular, and the transition between dinner & hors d’ oeuvres (did I mention they do those??) was so smooth I didn’t even notice the switch over. They even brought in their famous pizzas later in the evening much to the delight of all my out of town family that HAS to have it whenever they are here.
Liberty’s had all the little details taken care of so I didn’t have to. The staff was wonderful, professional, and efficient.
Best part? The next day we got to come back and pick up all our leftover food and serve it up to all our hungry tailgaters during the Packers game! ;)

With a gorgeous Friday upon us, Alyssa & I decided to take a day trip down to Red Wing and meet up with some college friends. We never knew it was so close! Under an hour and we’re roaming the old streets and businesses. After a long day in Bay Point Park playing and catching up, we make a plan to head over to Liberty’s for the All-​You-​Can-​Eat Friday Night Fish Fry Buffet. This one has been bookmarked about as long as we’ve been on Unilocal.However, we have never made the trip to try it out before.
We decided to walk from the park to Liberty’s and that paid off for us. We got Pheona to sleep during the walk. Pheona has entered her terrible two’s. Going out to eat is not a pleasurable experience. In fact, we are thinking we might not be eating out much for the next year or so. Our friends made the drive to Liberty’s, so they got there before us. When we arrived, which took maybe 20 – 30 minutes, we looked around for them, but couldn’t find ‘em. They never came in! They stayed in the car. So, we got a good look around at the place. It’s located right in the heart of downtown Red Wing. On the corner of 3^rd & Plum. They have great signage outside. One says they’ve been open since 1975. On the sidewalk outside, they have a sign stating the AYCE Buffet being served from 4:30 — 9:30. We got there right before 8:30.
When you walk in, you are greeted by the host stand. There is seating areas to the right and left. Just past that is two more seating areas to the right and left. If you kept walking straight through from the entrance, you’d be heading into the bar area. The place is large! In every one of the four dining areas, they have pictures on the wall telling the story of Red Wing. Very cool history.
We asked to be seated where we wouldn’t be disturbing any other diners. We got our request honored. We sat in the second area to the right. Nobody but our group was in there. Our server was prompt in asking our choice of beverages. One of our friends noted that they serve 1919 Root Beer on tap. I got a pitcher of it to share. When our beverages were delivered, we all ordered the Buffet.
Pheona was awake at this time, so I ran up to grab her some food right away. Some Popcorn Shrimp, Beer Battered Cod, and Tater Tots were quick & easy. Those got in front of her in a minutes time. I went back to grab a cup of Clam Chowder & a salad. The salad bar was fresh & stocked. It had everything a normal salad bar should have. Cheddar Cheese & real Bacon Bits, too! There was also Coleslaw & Pasta Salad. As well as Chocolate Mousse & Cherry Marshmallow Whip. You really can’t beat making your own salad. It tasted great. The Chowder was just as good. It had that house made feel. Instead of cubed potatoes, it had shredded, or hash brown potatoes. First time I’ve experienced that.
My next trip up, I got a real good look at all the offerings for supper. Besides what I got for Pheona, there was Broasted Chicken, BBQ Ribs, Chicken Wings, Green Bean Casserole, Baked Beans, Au Gratins, Baked Potatoes, & Rolls.
I started with almost the same plate I got Pheona. I added Baked Beans & Au Gratins. The Tater Tots were old and cooked a long time ago. Same with the Popcorn Shrimp. The Cod was slightly better. Still, it wasn’t fresh. Maybe cooked a hour before? The Au Gratins were forgettable. The Beans were thick & hearty. Good flavor with BBQ sauce mixed in.
Going up for hot food the second time, I was really just poking around to see what might be fresh, if anything. I noticed they had put more Beer Battered Cod out, so I grabbed a couple of those along with some Beans. I also got some desserts. Besides the sweets in the Salad Bar, they had a plate of Chocolate Cake. I got all three. The Cod was much better. A squeeze of lemon and a dip in the creamy Tartar Sauce made for an enjoyable bite. The Cod flaked away from the crunchy shell of Beer Batter.
After finishing the Fish, I took in my plate of sweets. The Chocolate Cake was moist and rich. Fantastic. The Mousse was standard and was more pudding-​like. I loved the Cherry Whip. The marshmallows made me feel like a kid again. All-​in-​all, it was a fine finish to the meal.
Alyssa & I were debating on whether to rate this a 2 or a 3 star review. We both agreed on 3 due to the timing of us coming in and eating. When eating a Buffet and arriving within the last hour of it being served, should one expect everything to be fresh? That depends. We both think if you arrive within a hour of the time this Buffet starts, it could be great. It’s something to remember going forward. Starts at 4:30. Get there by 5 and you’ll be fine.

The Friday night buffet is great … From the fish, shrimp, chicken, ribs, and salad bar … The buffet is a great deal for the dollars you spend … The atmosphere is neat … It has a tendency to bring you back in time to the early days of Red Wing … The staff is pleasant and friendly … Plenty of seating in the dinning room or bar area … I have no problem recommending Liberty’s to anyone…

Stopped for a snack while passing through town. Service was mediocre. I had the cinnamon twist which was fantastic. It was warm and soft, the icing was of good flavor and sweetness — not too thin, not too thick.
My boyfriend got a chocolate milkshake and egg sandwhich on an English muffin. The shake was good. Nice texture. He recommends it. The sandwich was also good, but he wished it came with hashbrowns instead of potato chips.
