P & J Custom Window Coverings

Ok so they advertise/​say they have a lifetime warranty… LIARS. They want you to make sure you have your pink slip first. So luckily I keep all records. I call them 6 times during the course of 4 months and don’t even request for anyone to come out. Just have them sent me new plastic, flimsy inserts to fix it myself. They say they ship them on Mondays and it is coming out to me. I am still waiting and the people I speak with on the other end keep telling me the same story. It’s on it’s way. Well snail mail it is because I am still waiting. I am about to report them to BBB. These people have no ethics, customer service or any business sense whatsoever. I requested to speak with someone who can just get me what I need and no reply. These people need to get shut down. If you are considering them STOP and run the other way! Don’t do business with these people unless you want to be taken advantage of.

We love P&J. I just ordered two more window coverings from them today. Lesli came out today and measured for us. She brought samples and made sure that what we were ordering matched our current window coverings. She explained some new options to us as well.
The shutters in my daughters room look amazing, keep out the light when we want it out and have been fantastic. Little kids opening and closing them for a few years has not made any impact on them. They look brand new, open and close easily, and are fantastic.
From the call to get Lesli out to the service when they install them, P&J is fantastic. I have referred my friends to them and will continue to do so!

This company has the worst customer service. Less then a year after we bought new blinds for our slider several of them broke. When we called they told us there was nothing they could do about it. We had to threaten to contact the better business bureau before they agreed to replace the broken blinds. The new ones have broken (and we always open the blinds before collapsing them). They sell poor quality product at high quality prices. I will never recommend this company for anything!

My 89-​year old mother-​in-​law purchased a set of pleated shades here. When the shades arrived 4 weeks later, they were not what she ordered. Since she had family visiting from Chicago, she asked if they could expedite the replacement order. They said yes, it should be done in two weeks. After 2 weeks and no delivery (and family arriving), she called to find out where the order stood. The rep didn’t know. She then asked if the company would give her a discount since they misplaced the order and even the second order was late. The woman said she would take care of it. Two full months after the original order, the pleated shades were delivered. There was no discount. The installer, who was very professional, said that he would call the office. The manager, Donna, said absolutely not. So the bottom line is a mistake in order entry, 2-​month delivery time, and promised discounts with none given.

My husband and I ordered shutters for 2 sets of sliding glass doors in April 2014. The salesperson, Leslie, was nice and made a good presentation. After some delays, the plantation shutters were installed. We stayed entirely out of the way during the install. We were SO angry when we saw them! CHEAP!!! My husband wanted to rip them down. The calls to the office were so frustrating, the receptionist was unbelievably RUDE each time I called. It was obvious it was part of her job to be nasty, she was very good at it. Eventually Leslie came out to investigate and agreed with us. The cheesy plastic «valance» had already split apart. My husband could not walk through the slider without ducking. The shutters were installed upside down and they wobbled. Screws were used in the tracks to stop the shutters from sliding off. Leslie called the owner. We settled on a refund of $ 800 and we would keep the shutters. I wish we’d read the Unilocal reviews before dealing with this company.
My husband revamped the shutters. He flipped them over, built a sturdy wooden valance across the top and a bookcase between. What a difference!

I originally had Leslie out for an estimate (all my windows + french doors) as I believed the cost would be so high, I would have to install a few at a time. I got exactly what I was looking for and the total was so reasonable, I had all installed at the same time. The shutters for the French doors were tricky as there are «side lights» to deal with as well as the door handle. Leslie did a great measuring job and Spencer installed everything quickly and quietly. He also took great care to clean up after himself and removed his shoes so as not to track in dirt on my light carpet. I felt they both knew their work very well and I am delighted with the product as well as their service. I will use them again when I need window coverings.

If you decide to go with P&J let me give you some warning, pros, and cons.
WARNING: Read every line of the contract they give you to sign. The sales lady, Arlene, told us they can do weekend installs or after 5:00 PM. That was one major factor that we considered while making our purchasing decision after getting several quotes. Of course, when time came to schedule the installation, which my wife had to call them to do, they told her that they do not do weekend installs nor do they do installations after 5:00 PM. Eva, the manager, said that we are bound by the contract and it says their install times are only during 8:00 am — 5:00 pm, M –F. Shame on us for not reading the contract and going by what the sales rep said. The kicker is that Eva acknowledged that Arlene has told customers the same exact thing before!!! She even indicated that they have «reprimanded her». She had no real solution. Doesn’t solve our problem, but I digress.
PROS: Their prices were the lowest (pro? or you get what you pay for?). Their installer, Chris, was very courteous and installed 8 window coverings in under an hour and a half! Also, feels good to know you purchased a product made locally in Fresno.
CONS: Their product just seems ok and I have concerns about longevity and dealing with their warranty since dealing with their office staff has been a sub par experience; that is putting it nicely. Their office staff and slimy sales person, which are the face of their company, have horrendous customer service skills. We had another issue when my wife called a few days before the installation appointment to confirm the date. The manager said that one shutter was still missing and she wanted to setup a second day (and force me to take more time off work), to install it. I was furious only because my wife had to call THEM to get this info?! The manager eventually took $ 100 off our order, but as soon as we asked to cancel because we did not want to engage in a long-​term relationship with them (warranty woes), since their customer service to that point had been horrible, she threatened to send it to collections because that’s what the contract indicated.
If I really wanted to deal with their incompetence, then I could have canceled the deposit on my credit card and see if they send it to collections. I was reading the contract after all the shenanigans, and noticed that they never had us sign their warranty and disclosure document. They only had us sign the invoice. I let the manager know next time to do her homework if she was going to threaten a customer with collections.
The owner, Matt Carlton, should really look at his administrative and sales staff and reconsider his decision to hire such rude people to deal with the people paying his bills. Again, the ONLY real good experience I had, was with Chris, the installer. He was the only one apologetic about what had happened to us. That is NOT the job as the installer.

This company installed shutters in my kitchen 8 years ago. I thought one of the wands was broken and called to get it fixed. Spencer arrived today and explained that it was just missing a cap, gave me a couple extra caps in case it happens again, and put the new one on the wand. He checked out the other 3 shutters and asked if the windows had been replaced after they were installed (yes), as the latches weren’t aligned. He was kind enough to check each one of them and adjust them if needed, and then he re-​glued one top piece that I’d forgotten was loose. I really appreciate great service, Spencer just didn’t replace the wand cap but made sure all the shutters were in good, working order and tweaked those that weren’t. I will definitely use P & J the next time I need window coverings!

I had Spencer come out to fix my 12 year old blinds! He was courteous and well informed. He saw that my blinds were fixed promptly. I had a good experience with the phone staff, also.

It took a week to get a call back. which led to an appointment for the following week. A woman came to our home for a consultation and she was all about their shutters. They manufacture their own and have a lifetime warranty. They also offer other window covering options such as blinds and roller shades.
She measured the windows. She brought a few samples out of her trunk to show. a traditional shutter and trim/​siding choices, colors. I asked if she could leave any samples. She couldn’t or wouldn’t. I asked for a written estimate. She wrote it down on the back of her card.
I didn’t like the way she spoke to me. She spoke to me as if I couldn’t afford what she was selling. I don’t like that. I just want to be treated like any customer. I felt sized up and spoken to like I was wasting her time.
I thought the product she was showing was shit. The product looked and felt cheap. It was fine looking at it from afar.
After our consultation, I felt offended. I looked into the business via the internet. I checked BBB reviews and they had over 20 complaints and that pretty much put the whole ordeal to rest. I didn’t like her or the way she spoke to me, I didn’t like their products, they had numerous complaints.
She didn’t follow up with me which made my concerns feel validated.

Just got our Shutters put in today. They are so beautiful and were such a great deal. We dealt with Leslie as our rep and she was truly amazing. Chris was installer and was amazing, as well. If you want Blinds, this is the place to go. We had several other bids and they not only beat it, but they manufacture their shutters in Fresno, California.

I recently purchased a 1915 Craftsman home in Midtown. The house has been restored and updated to immaculate condition. After research I Knew I wanted Norman Composite Shutter Blinds. I received 3 quotes and P&J being my third. I am glad I found them. Here is why:
Design Consultant: (Leslie) from P&J came out to the house to take measurements and provide samples to look at color etc. She was extremely knowledgeable and professional, not to mention beautiful as hell. (I know… not the point) she even caught potential measurement obstacles, the others did not.
Installer: (Spencer) He has been with P&J for 10years installing window coverings; he has his craft down to a science. He was fast and efficient. Very Impressive!
Price: They were more reasonably priced then any of the others, for the same product, and they were running a special where they included the installation and sales tax.
Bottom Line: Working with P&J has been a great experience. If you’re reading this, I am certain you have found one of the best in town.

Funny how my previous review has disappeared!!! So here is the update, the sales person came out did what sales people do, say anything you want to hear, stated she would have the shutters fixed ASAP! That was over a month ago!!! Not one word from them! Are you kidding me?
Worst company for customer service I have ever worked with! I am now going to file a complaint with the BBB! Shutters are cheap and they could care less how poor their service is!
Keep looking if you want quality products and kind staff.

I am a real homeowner, and am not a competitor or anyone else with issues about this company. Because of the bad reviews, I ALMOST cancelled my order. The owner was very concerned, and contacted me directly to discuss my worries about some of the negative reviews. I just had my shutters done, and they are first quality, and beautiful. The quality, price, efficiency and professionalism of this company is excellent, and I would not give a 5 star rating if this were not true. I ordered my first set of blinds in late summer 2010 I decided to replace my mini blinds with shutters on my windows facing west and getting the evening sun. My sales rep– Debbie was very thorough and helpful. In about five weeks my shutters arrived and were installed. What a difference, at least 5 — 10 degrees cooler. We loved them so much that we ordered shutters for three other windows and for two storage units and referred several customers to P & J’s and several placed multiple orders as well. The installers were very helpful and courteous as well. This past summer one of my shutters broke and I contacted the office and someone came out and made the repair I was impressed. Since we live in the information age and we all order a lot of item and P & J offers a lifetime warranty I was surprised when I called yesterday and left a voicemail message and didn’t receive a return call. I chalked that up office being busy may I was lost in the shuffle. But when I called the office to request service for yet another shutter repair and the office Staff Donna stated that I needed to find my original purchase agreement and fax it to Fresno in order to get service I was at a loss for words. I will fax my documents to get the repair but I do think a company should keep records onsite for service related issues. I will not refer any further customers to this company.

I was really worried about ordering as I have seen negative reviews. I am so glad I took a chance. The price was 500.00 cheaper than my first estimate from another place. I only had one large sliding glass door done. They were very professional. I will call them again when I need window coverings. I ordered throgh the Union City office and I live all the way in Antioch.

We made an appointment with Debbie and when she came out (late) we told her exactly what we wanted — white, honeycomb shades in the top down bottom up style. After she took the measurements, for the entire house, we agreed to the price and paid our deposit.
When the installer came out the order was missing one window (the largest) and it was not the «top down bottom up» style, it was the normal style. When I spoke to the woman in the office she stated that the window that was «forgotten» and it would now cost us another $ 320; also the correct blind style would be substantially more. She was insistent that we install what arrived and to pay the balance. It would be straightened out later. We refused.
After he left I called back to speak to someone about the errors and since no one was available a return call, from a manager, would be forthcoming the next morning. Well almost a week later, we have not had a call.
Imagine our surprise, today, when the doorbell rang and standing there, was an irritated and indignant Debbie. She wanted to be «let in» so that she could get the authorization to install the blinds — we refused.
She then called our cells and threatened us with collections if we didn’t install them immediately. She was extremely aggressive and intimidating; we assume that she was mad about losing her commission, regardless for anyone to behave that way is disturbing.
This is a tough economy and everyone is struggling so it’s even more disappointing when it’s apparent that you are being ripped off by a typical «bait and switch» job. My recommendation is to go elsewhere. No one should be treated this way.
