Hagan Community Park

I was looking for a place where 1. I could walk my dog, 2. That offered paved roads after the recent rains, and 3. Was scenic. Hagan Park hits all the marks!
I was surprised that this park was so huuuugge and offers a wide variety of features. Playgrounds, dog parks, expansive areas of grass, a small lake, dirt walking trails, paved biking and walking trails, and a path that runs right along the beautiful American river. I even saw a handful of people fishing in the lake! I don’t know what the little barn is all about on the southeast corner, but A DONKEY AND A TURKEY LIVE THERE AND THEY ARE PROBABLY ANIMAL BEST FRIENDS.
While walking along the bike trail and the river, we also saw several beautiful species of large wild birds, like egrets. This is part of the main paved trail that spans the American river from Folsom to downtown.
Parking is $ 4 in the front lots, but there are FREE lots further away in the back.

My husband, son and I visit Hagan Community Park a handful of times each year for special events including the «Mopar Day in the Park» car show and swap meet put on each summer by Capital City Mopars. Each December we come to ride the steam train around the park to «Santa’s Village» where we get a picture with Santa and enjoy hot chocolate and treats while waiting for our photo to print/​be loaded onto a flash drive; this event is put on by Sacramento Valley Live Steamers (the train ride is free, but donations are accepted, there is a charge for photos). In addition to these fun annual events we enjoy the petting zoo, duck pond and kids playgrounds. They also have a fenced dog park, plenty of picnic tables and BBQs and the restrooms are usually clean. I am hoping to check out their 4^th of July celebration this year — other Unilocalers say it is a must.

I like the train, been going there for almost 30 years. Now I take my kids, it just keeps getting better. I also enjoy the July 4^th celebrations. Great fireworks, and lots to do.

There’s an enormous crazy woman in a wheelchair who lives near the swing set (where the donkey barn is). She has a mini fortress made of garbage and she yells obscenities at anyone who gets too close. I felt sorry for the family who was trying to have a birthday party a couple table away. If they got rid of her, this would be a beautiful park.

Spacious park with river access, fishing pond, petting zoo and dog park. I enjoy the playground, yes we enjoy the swings. I usually park off of Ambassador to save a lil money. Today was kinda weird, a 15 year old (I suspect) asked me for a cigarette. Of course I denied but yea other than Cordova High adjacent, it’s a nice park. I’m glad it’s so close.

very spacious and lots of room for kids to run. I like the pond and the enclosed playground. Only downside is the enclosed playground area is very small but I think they have a larger one. I love all the space at the park for fun events to be held. the petting zoo is really cool when it is open! My husband and I take our little one here a lot. The dog park area is awesome for pets too.

We live within walking distance and always enjoy the park. Petting zoo, train rides, 3 dog parks, 3 ball fields, 1 soccer field and lots of BBQ areas. Oh, and a pool, tennis courts, a kids play area and community center.
The ponds can get pretty trash filled as summer heats up. The grey pines are some of the biggest around.
The 3 day 4^th of July party is a must.

Just got back from here. I really liked this park… it butts up against the bike trail and the river. They have 3 sectioned off areas; large dogs, small dogs and some random one — not sure what it’s for. As usual, i had to do a once-​around to pick up others poop that don’t really know any better but it gives me something to do while my dogs play so whatever. Lots of trees, grass, chairs, views… really nice. AND this park provides poop bags unlike mine which is run by the city.

This is a great park. The set up is wonderful, and would be a great place to hike or bike. We mostly just go to events here, but maybe will plan a hike or bike ride soon. It is truly a great venue for events.
Speaking of events, I hope that whoever plans the 4^th of July festival will read what I have to say below.
My family loves to go to the 4^th of July festival. It has everything you could want. Live bands, carnival rides, food, beer garden, fireworks and more. I remember the first time we went, it seemed almost too good to be true. We were kicking back in the beer garden and relaxing, then we saw what might be the best fireworks display in town. It’s a much longer display than what I remember at many other places.
Having said all of that, this year, I have noticed some problems that could destroy the event if it gets any worse.
1. Impossibly long lines at the toilets. Sane people usually expect that port-​o-​potty situations will be a rough experience, but waiting a half hour to use the toilet is a product of poor planning. Maybe because it was on a Friday, it was a bigger turnout? At any rate, things like this should be thought of in the planning process.
2. There were at least 2 beer gardens. One that allowed children to sit in the area and one that did not. The one that did not allow children to sit in the area was set up with tons of comfortable seating, and almost nobody was there. I think there was about 5 people sitting in the area. The garden that allowed children in the area was overflowing with people and there was no place to sit. We had to stand and have a beer (you cannot take beer off the premise). It was not a relaxing experience at all. Especially in the heat. I think that the gardens should have been reversed. The bigger one would have made more sense for the people who have children with them. I think they picked the smaller one for people with kids because it is near the rides, but it didn’t work out very well.
3. On the way to go find the van, I noticed that there were several people smoking pot, doing drugs and having sex. You could smell thick clouds of cannabis smoke all over the place and there were tons of security there. I don’t really care who does drugs or who decides to have sex, but this is a family event and there are children all over the place seeing (and smelling) this. Not to mention, the one couple in the sleeping bag picked a really dangerous place to have sex. I shined my flashlight right on them, because at first I thought it was someone who passed out or got hurt. It was right in the grass where people were parked and it eventually became a path of traffic. Maybe instead of worrying so much about who manages to sneak in food or alcohol, security could prioritize a little and keep an eye out for more harmful types of behavior?
Please address these issues, and make it a better event next year. I think this year may have been just a fluke, but it would be sad if the event started going downhill.

Hagan Community Park is a multi-​purpose, 80-​acre park located on the south side of the American River and tucked behind Cordova High School. It’s accessible via the American River Parkway/​Bike Trail and offers free parking (get there early!).
Features:
baseball and soccer fields, aquatic center, dog park, playground, fish pond, picnic areas, large picnic pavilion, biking/​walking trails, tennis courts.
This is Rancho Cordova’s largest community park, and a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids and dogs (leashed). For those hot summer days, you’ll appreciate the thoughtful placement of many shaded picnic areas situated around the duck/​goose pond. Your group of 150+ will fit into the pavilion, with its two built-​in BBQ pits and handy concrete serving tables. What’s not to like here?

I love this park. It’s humongous, and it’s right on the bike trail, so it’s really just the perfect place to just stroll around and hang out. For the kiddos, they have a petting zoo, two playgrounds, and a train that runs through the park. There is also a big creek that runs all the way through the park, with a huge duck pond in the middle of it. I’m not sure if this is technically allowed, but it’s fun to walk through the creek barefoot in the summer.
There are tons of trees to climb, which also means that this park is really well-​shaded. There are lots of barbecues and this is a great place to have a picnic in good weather. The restrooms are use-​able (by bike trail standards, at least), and a pathway that goes through the major parts of the park was recently added so that those in wheelchairs can now get all the way to the bike trail without having to cross the grass.
There is also a fenced in dog park, and it’s easy to walk down to the beach, near the area that rafters call «whore island.» (Or is that just my friends?)
This park is never empty in daylight, which makes it a great, safe place to have a biking stretch. There is also a huge parking lot, which is paid on an honor system. I wouldn’t recommend staying parked here more than an hour after sunset (when the park closes), because they close some of the exits, and finding a way out can be a nightmare.

This is one of my favorite parks in Sacramento. Especially for watching fireworks on the third or Fourth of July. The petting zoo is great when it’s open and riding the train is pretty cool too. Every once in a while their club gets together and they have more trains running. Hopefully this year they’ll bring the haunted house back in October. It’s great to have such a nice park next to the river and the bike trail.

Came here this morning with a friend anticipating a good work out. We had looked up nearby hikes and this place kept coming up on our searches. While here we didn’t find a hike but many other interesting things…
The main thing we found was dead fish. Like seriously. A ton of dead fish. Near the fishing pond and down by the river. Super strange and disgusting.
Also we were so stoked for the petting zoo and train… Because who says only kids enjoy those things?! But both were closed!
I know it’s winter but it’s also California. It’s always beautiful and sunny!
I could tell this park has potential. We went wandering around on the trails and it’s very beautiful. I’ll come back here during peak season and I’m sure I’ll have a better experience. But will there be less dead fish??? Now that I don’t know.

This review is mostly for the Santa Train event being sponsored by the Steamers Railroad Museum club. It was last weekend and is continuing this weekend December 14^th and 15^th, 2013 from 12 – 4. You should take your kids out to this because it is a wonderful, low cost outing where the kids can ride the train out to Santa’s Village, talk to Santa, get cookies and hot cocoa and ride the train back, all for free!
They do take donations and charge a fee for pictures and CDs of your pictures with Santa. But the pictures are adorable and the Santa they have is a genius for getting pictures with children and babies without them crying. Santa told us he is the official Santa of Rancho Cordova! I can see why, he is excellent! My two year old typically cries whenever we try to get him to sit with Santa, but they sat him and his brother on the scale model train and then Santa just poked his head up behind them and voila! adorable Santa picture! We even used it as our Christmas cards this year. My two year old even willingly approached him and sat on his lap for a minute, which just usually never happens with any strangers, much less ones in big red costumes.
The trains are tiny and adorable and run on real steam. You straddle wooden benches to ride the train and you could easily tip a train off the tracks if you are not careful. But the track is long and winding and they have adorable little minature scenes set up along the way. We even saw a live deer staring at us from the bushes.
To get to the Steamers event you take the park road all the way back to where the animal barn is, park and go left around the barn. Line up to get on the train and it will take you to the event and back. When we went last Sunday the line to see Santa was not very long, much shorter than most malls.
This park in general has a lot to offer and hosts different events throughout the year along with playgrounds, ponds, sports fields, a swimming pool, you name it and they have it.

I like this park. The Little Steamers trains are a blast. I highly recommend checking them out, especially at holidays.

We went here for DH work party. I loved that being near a lake to see the ducks. I would come back here again with the kids just to play.

Great park, costs $ 5 to get in and $ 15 for an annual pass. I wish this was posted somwhere though. Ample parking and equipment for all sorts of activites. Strongly recommend for parties.

There’s a stocked pond, the American River bike trail, the American River, soccer field, baseball field, petting barn, mini train, playground, doggie doo doo bags, playground, and best of all… FREE parking! If you use the free parking lot, you’ll have to walk a little ways to get to the river, but it’s all good, it’s a nice park to walk through. They also offer free parking in the inner lots from November to March (don’t quote me on that, but I think I read that somewhere).
My dog gives it 5 woofs!
