I had the pleasure this week of seeing my father play in the North Carolina Senior Games, he and his team are there each year. He was playing softball and this complex is home to the games they play in for NCSG. This park is a hidden gem here in the Raleigh area, very nice! You can see that this facility is well maintained by local parks and recreation. I’d go so far as to say almost immaculately maintained. All the players seem to enjoy using it and I didn’t hear any negatives while enjoying the action. Nicely laid out with multiple fields, with a central station for refreshments, announcers and scorekeepers to do their work, and bathrooms(pretty nice for a softball field). Lots of green grass with trees throughout if you are looking for some shade during the day. Most of the spectator stands do not have a covering but one that I recall, though. The grounds look wonderful. I do take a star off for the parking, pretty rough, not paved of course, and kind of detracts from the nice feel of the park itself. But there’s plenty of parking space for tournaments. In short, pretty impressive softball park. Raleigh should be proud.

These fields may be some of the best in Raleigh, and they still suck. Pebbles all over the infield make it real dangerous. Every time you dive or slide you end up bleeding thanks to the rough ground. It makes you wonder where they got the dirt for the fields? Also, the City of Raleigh runs a fall softball league that starts in August and ends on Sept. 20th??? Strange that not one game is actually in the fall!

Walnut Creek is home to the best softball fields in Raleigh. I’ve been playing slow-pitch softball through the City of Raleigh for about three years, and the other fields in the system simply don’t receive as much attention as Walnut Creek’s. The big reason why Walnut Creek has the best fields is because it’s home to a number of high school and ASA tournaments. Most of the playing fields are level and the grass is well-maintained. There are usually too many little rocks in the infield for my liking, but overall the fields are the highest quality in Raleigh’s park system. There’s a lower and upper half at the complex. The lower half has fields 1 – 5 with a building in the middle that houses bathrooms, snacks and an observation deck(for scorekeepers). The upper half has a similar layout, but only four fields(6 – 9). If you’re playing at an upper field, make sure to park the furthest down you can before the handicapped spots(unless, of course, you’re handicapped). Pass the handicapped spots and walk up the access road to the upper fields.
