The renovated Hive is now Mash and Lauter! Focused on Belgium beers and a small list of bites, you’ll find the place hasn’t changed too much. Still a long narrow space with slightly more dim lighting, the space feels more like a lounge now sans couches. The beer menu is primarily bottled with a handful of drafts available. European(Belgian?!) songs waft overhead give the place a very different feel than the sometimes raucous Hive. Out on the rooftop patio, things haven’t changed much at all. I checked out the menu and it’s got some basics like mussels, charcuterie and a burger. Basically stuff to nibble on rather than have a real meal. Overall I think they’ve done a decent renovation but only time will tell. 3.5 stars but I’m rounding down to 3 for now…

First time at Mash and Lauter! Loving the atmosphere, the food and especially, the beers! The wonderful bartender, Aaron, recommended the Rosetta to me and who knew it was a sour beer?!?(My all time favorite! Winning!!) While I miss the Hive, I love the laid back feel of Mash and Lauter and the wonderfully unique feel of this new transformed space! Thanks for bringing this culturally sophisticated bar and experience to Raleigh! You can bet we will be back!

This place is another winner as we’ve all come to expect from the Busy Bee/Trophy ownership. Great beer! Oysters are the best I’ve had in town, and a fantastic staff(Sean took great care of us.) THANKYOUMASHLAUTER!!!

Short and simple, this isn’t Belgian inspired food in any way shape or form. It’s a smaller version of the not so good Busy Bee. Slightly more Belgian beer and less food. I stopped in to check the new place out. I quickly received a large beer menu(much like Busy Bee). I scanned through it and found the food in the corner of the sheet. It took up about 1⁄5 of the menu sheet. Glanced through it, salad, burger, etc., nothing Belgian. So I asked about the Belgian menu. They answered by telling me about the one special that was being served at the Busy Bee. Highly disappointed in the lack of any Belgian like food, I left, based on previous experiences at the Busy Bee, I cannot see a reason to return. Busy Bee 2.0

From some of Raleigh’s beer scene best comes a Belgian inspired bar in the space that was once The Hive, offering a variety of food and drinks inspired by the region. The space has turned atmospheric, with lowered lights and European classics like Françoise Hardy and The Adventures of Tintin setting the mood. Small plates from olives to assorted cheeses(but of course) are available, with more hearty fare including a house burger and mussels present if you’d like to make a meal of it. The draft and cocktail selection is currently limited but slated to expand, with a nicely curated bottle selection rounding out things; given the team, I’m expecting very innovative, bold choices over time. A trip to Belgium isn’t on most folks’ weekend itinerary, but a visit to Mash & Lauter might quench your thirst for the moment!
