I think these reviews are romanized. The barbershop is a basement and a man with a pair of clippers. He only has certain guard numbers(#3 ½, not #4) and the place is not well cleaned. The haircut was alright but nothing special.

With the growing trend of Sportclips’s disguised as old-fashioned barber shops, it’s important to recognize the original barbers of Raleigh. Jimmy, at Five Points Barber Shop, is one of them. He’s been cutting hair for over 30 years, and he has been cutting my hair for about four. If you don’t live in Five Points or in downtown Raleigh, you probably want to try to find a barber closer to you due to limited hours. Jimmy works half the day from 7:30 — 11:30am Monday-Saturday. Walk-ins only. If you get to the shop within those hours, he’ll get to you. You should call ahead to make sure he isn’t on vacation or to check the current wait. In general, I would avoid 10:30am on a Saturday morning. 7:30−8am in the middle of the week is usually pretty safe. Make sure to bring some cash. Normal haircuts are $ 12 and Jimmy appreciates tips so he can afford new fishing or skydiving gear. You can get cash at many places in Five Points, including the gas stations and Wells Fargo. Remember to learn how to talk to your barber. Don’t just say«a little bit off the top». Memorize your clipper guards or how many inches you want off the top and sides. If you aren’t sure what you want, make sure to tell Jimmy that and he’ll work with you by cutting a little bit off at a time.

One of the best barber shops in the Wake County area for the money. I travel all the way from Wake Forest to have this gentleman cut my hair.

There are many bad barbers in Raleigh. There are a handful of good barbers. Jimmy is great. If you think the words stylist and barber are synonymous and can be used interchangeably, then you’re too far gone and redemption is out of the question. Please continue to enjoy your $ 40 coiffure as well as the comforting certainty that PBR beer doesn’t taste like malted cat urine. For the rest of you who may be languishing in a strip mall Sports Cuts while secretly harboring the belief that there might just be something better out there, go see Jimmy. He’s a consummate professional, his shop is iconic and he’s one of the friendliest people you could hope to meet.

We took my son there for his first cut. It was a bittersweet moment, and Jimmy handled it with aplomb. We left as happy as we could be, and we’ll be back.
