Windpoint Lighthouse

One of the oldest and tallest lighthouses on Lake Michigan. Beautiful location on Wind Point and easily accessible (slow down and look for the sign). The buildings are very well taken care of along with pretty landscaping. It’s nice to be able to see the lighthouse from all sides. The Wind Point Police Department has an office in the former keeper’s quarters. A bonus is to access the small beach area with a beautifully kept lakeshore garden. There is a small museum open at limited hours with books and other trinkets for sale. The reason for 4 out of 5 stars? Very limited opportunities to climb the tower. Only several Sundays a year. I bring many groups here and I can’t get them inside… bummer.

This is a neat stop in Racine and a cool piece of Lake Michigan history. The lighthouse is impressive and all of the history made it a great experience. I am a history nerd so this is right in my wheelhouse, pun intended.
This is a small piece of property that has nice bathrooms, the lighthouse and a few other buildings, and a nice beach front good for a short walk or just looking off in the distance.
We went around sunset which made the lighthouse look spectacular.
This place is definitely worth the quick stop/​detour if you’re in the area.
Get out, stretch your legs, enjoy the sights, and learn something cool about history!

When I retire I’m going to be one of those old nerdy types who visits lighthouses. Oh wait, I already am. The Windpoint Lighthouse is located on Wind Point, 3.5 miles north of Racine. On a sunny day this 108′ foot beacon of «keep your boat away or you’l get run aground» makes for some postcard worthy photos. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
I’m partial to Milwaukee’s North Point lighthouse because you can climb to the top of the inside on most days. It’s roughly 30′ shorter than Windpoint.

We have visited here many times and were fortunate enough to have our wedding here on the lawn of the lighthouse a few years ago. We used the house as an area to get dressed and to sign our marriage license, but spent the rest of the time on the grounds. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful site!

Beautiful lighthouse and beach to check out north of Racine, if you’re taking the scenic route south of Milwaukee along the lakefront. Will note the turnoff for this lighthouse off the highway is a little tricky to find, but it’s south of where 4 Mile Road ends and curves to become Lighthouse Drive, and north of a parking lot for a golf course just to the south of here (and the INCORRECT turnoff from the highway). Just basically look for a small sign for the Wind Point village hall and police station, and after you park, it’s right there.
Sad to discover after checking the website, that lighthouse tours are only given 3 times a year! (only given on the first Sundays of July, August, and September, and just costs $ 10) But it’s something I wouldn’t mind going out of my way to do in a future year, if I’m ever near Racine again on one of those Sundays.

If you enjoy the lake front, history, light houses, architectures or tours of any kind, the Windpoint Lighthouse is a nice 2 hour diversion to take advantage of. The lighthouse holds a lot of history for Lake Michigan and you can advantage of the free tours offered. If you’re in the area and it’s a nice day, go drive by and check it out.
