One of our nation’s oldest zoos, Roger Williams Park Zoo is an integral part of southern New England’s history and heritage, bringing excitement and discovery of the natural world to generations of visitors. Today the Zoo is one of Rhode Island’s top tourist attractions, welcoming over 650,000 people annually from all over New England and beyond.

Situated within Providence’s historic and beautiful Roger Williams Park, the Zoo is home to well over 100 species of rare and fascinating animals from all over the world. As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Zoo is also home to many endangered species and participates in cooperative conservation and breeding programs to help ensure their future survival.

Along with many animal exhibits, the Zoo also features seasonal offerings, which includes the Flutterby: Butterflies in Bloom special exhibit, Camel Rides, and the Rock Climbing Wall; animal feeding opportunities; and Rhode Island’s annual fall tradition, the nighttime Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular.

History

Established in 1872.

One of the first zoos to open in the United States, Roger Williams Park Zoo was founded in 1872 with a collection of small animal exhibits throughout Providence’s newly formed Roger Williams Park. Conservation and environmental education were unknown concepts at the time; the animals were simply on display.

Since then, Roger Williams Park Zoo has grown both in terms of its exhibits and its mission. What started as a scattered collection of small animals on display purely for the purpose of entertainment has today evolved into «New England’s great zoo» (The Boston Globe) and one of our region’s foremost centers for conservation and environmental education.
