Union Creek Resort

We staid here one night after we spent the day exploring Crater Lake. Beautiful location and the staff was very friendly. The guy at the front desk gave us some suggestions for short hikes and where to find the lava tubes. (That was AMAZING.) Ice cream was a fun way to end the day. We staid in Cabin 8 and it was clean, had a microwave and mini fridge, hot shower! Would definitely stay again. I was somewhat nervous because there were some mixed reviews. It is simple and rustic, but was perfect for what it was.

Nice clean cabins. Surprised to have an air conditioner too! Free wifi a plus! Place grounds are nice and clean. Felt safe too! Nothing really going on near by but it’s a nice place to sleep after exploring crater lake.

«A-​OK», i.e., acceptable, pretty much nails it. I’d describe this place as somewhere between «rustic» and «run down» — Union Creek Resort was founded almost 100 years ago and it looks like it hasn’t been renovated in nearly as long! The location is excellent (close to some great hikes/​waterfalls, and of course Crater Lake), and really, that’s what you’re paying for. A few comments/​complaints to note:
1. We stayed in one of the cabins on the periphery of the property and were told at check in that the wifi would not reach our cabin.
2. Our neighbors’ fire pit was located right outside our window. Fortunately the neighbors were quite polite and kept the noise down (we are early to bed, early to rise to go hiking type people), however that did not prevent smoke from their fire entering our room. We wanted to keep the window closed but the room was too stuffy/​hot if we did so. You may not be as lucky with courteous neighbors.
3. Room was fairly stuffy as the windows are small and the temperatures were high. The resort installed an AC unit once the temps really got up there, however.
4. Room was pretty dark also, due to lack of windows.
5. Kitchen was stocked with the bare minimum, i.e., just two of everything.
6. Room was the size of a normal motel room, maybe a bit bigger, but really lacked any storage space (closest, suitcase racks, etc.), which made it feel cramped once we moved in.
7. I feel rates are too high for what is offered, except for location. Dog fee is also pretty steep.
All in all, this was a decent place to sleep after hiking all day, but we probably would not stay here again.

THIS. PLACE. IS. AMAZING.
Statyed there for 3 nights. Very amicable staff. They were quick and responsive. We, a group of 4 booked 2 rooms. I bumped into my friend in Portland and couldn’t leave him behind. The staff and owners were very accommodative in letting 3 ppl stay in 1 room. They have a rule against that for a 2 person room (fair enough). Initially they seemed a little apprehensive about 3 staying in a room for 2, but later on they were accommodative. Thank you!
LOCATION: 20 mins from crater lake. There are up to 4 trails (for leisure hiking), couple of them juxtapose the Creek and the Rogue River.
FOOD: Beckie’s restaurant across the road. Great food!
COMFORT: ¹⁰⁄₁₀. We stayed in rooms 204 & 205. Clean rooms and a clean common bathroom for the rooms.
SUGGESTION: (1) Internet. One thing I’d like to see them update is their WiFi/​internet strength/​access. A little slow to check in for flights. Took almost an hr for the web pages to load.
That beign said, you come here to get away from your cell phone, internet, etc. So it was not a problem after all. Would be more of a convinence upgrade for the guests.

We very much enjoyed our stay. There was a lot more cooking utensils then I expected which was a plus because I forgot some things I needed. The cabin was clean and larger then I thought it was going to be. The gas stove kept us nice and cozy. I would love to stay again in the summer to see what its like without 3 feet of snow everywhere.

It was a great experience with Union Creek Resort. I stayed in one of the cabins. I wanted to have a small 3 day retreat by myself near Crater Lake. Location was very good. Near a lot of nice trails (both easy and challenging), and quick drive up to Crater Lake. Lodge was simple but had all the basics, I had a kitchen so could do my own cooking, or could go to Beckie’s Café for one of my meals. Food there wasn’t memorable but I wasn’t going with food expectations, my goal was the wild and quiet Oregon Winter and this place delivers.
Definitely off the grid, no cell reception, even with Verizon, and very spotty and limited wifi. So make sure you are going here for the right reasons. There’s a pay phone for emergencies though.
Only comment I’d have is that their office hours and Café hours are limited, so plan accordingly. They do make accommodations if you are checking in late.

Owners did not honor their word. After purchasing my $ 148 Groupon I had to cancel plans twice (both due to family medical emergencies). At the time, staff was very helpful and assured me that there was no problem, my Groupon package would still be honored. The last time I rescheduled for Oct 23 I was told it would be fine except there would be a $ 35 reschedule fee, which seemed fair and I was perfectly fine with.
When I learned that I once again would not be able to go, I decided to give the Group-​on as a gift to an exceptional co-​worker. Once again, I called to confirm all was fine and that I could do that, and was again told yes.
After the colleague returned from her visit I was horrified to learn she had been told the Groupon had expired and she would owe the balance between the $ 148 Groupon purchase price and her room.
Throughout this process I talked to Union Creek staff and consistently received the same message: your package would be honored. That did not happen. My email to owner about the incident was not answered and when I would call, staff would only say owner isn’t here. Finally, a front desk person connected with the owner who was unwilling to make any amends. Regardless of what the Groupon said, her staff told me something completely different. She did not honor their word.
My colleague was in Cabin 21 — one of the best. She said it was only so-​so and kitchen was invaded by squirrel or rodent during the night.

Our family loved this place, we stayed their for the Halloween weekend and had a good time hiking right out of our cabin. Very close to Creater Lake and we went to the rim each day that we were their, even with a winter storm moving in.
The Cabin we stayed in was very cozy, and allowed us to have quality family time without the electronic distractions. The resort staff was very helpful and the café Beckies across the street has tasty food.

The cost of staying here is way to high for what you get out of it… probably due to lack of competition. I’ve stayed at airbnbs and other cabins with much more and the cost was much less. It would be worth the trip back if you lowered your prices because it would better reflect what you truly offer.

Can I go back yet?!?
This place was amazing and definitely my version of camping. You’re far away from town but not too far for it to feel like you’re going to be in a horror movie. There isn’t reception so make sure you take this adventure with someone you don’t mind actually speaking too. Being surrounded in a beautiful forest with trails and streams everywhere makes you not miss your phone much, except for when you want to Unilocal or Instagram how great it is ;)
The staff was very friendly and the convenience store at the check in had everything you needed in case you may had forgotten anything. Being that it’s the only «store» around for miles, they don’t price gouge their customers which is a plus as well.
I was disappointed I couldn’t get a room with a kitchen as everything was booked solid (so make sure you book in advance!), but regardless the cabin we did have, #16, was just fine.
Next time we venture up to crater lake we will definitely stay here.

Cute. Reminded all of us of summer camp. Tiny lil cabins, simple, simple. Good beds.

So, TWO MONTHS later I get a reply from the owners. It was a weak, insincere, apology and an excuse as to why their customer service stunk: «busiest time of the year so some things might be overlooked». They also wanted me to be aware that they strive to make everyone’s stay enjoyable. Mine wasn’t. Still no offer of full or partial refund. Wish I could give half a star.

I stayed in the TMA lodge. You get a lot of space for the price, that’s for sure.
The kitchen supplies are minimal and the house itself doesn’t feel very kept up. Exposed plumbing where a washer /​dryer used to be doesn’t scream classy. I love rustic, but with rustic comes charm, and there’s no charm here. And the whole house smelled funny. Hard to describe. Not bad, just weird. Beds were comfortable, but the bedding was cheap.
But like I said, lots of space for the family at an affordable price.
The restaurant across the street is great. The only way to get to our lodge from the main checkin cabin is to cross the river on the highway, which is strange. Building a foot bridge over the river would do this place wonders, but maybe they can’t get the permit or something. Great to hear the river from the bedroom at night.

This was the second time we have stayed here. We love it! The first time was in September a few years ago and the second time was just over Memorial Day weekend. We stayed in cabin #1, it’s pet friendly, clean and nicely appointed. Everyone there is super friendly, we brought our projector to watch movies in our cabin and needed an extension cord, I asked the nice girl at the front desk and by the time we came back from dinner it was in our room.
We will be back again :)

We had a beautiful experience here as a family, albeit a short one. The cabin was adorable and the property was stunning. We saw almost all of the property, Crater Lake and the Rouge River Gorge. To quote my 16 year-​old nature lover, «This is the answer to all the world’s problems», as we walked up the creek. Toni in the office was wonderful and helpful at both check-​in and when we visited the gift store shortly afterward. One thing I have to mention is that there should be some better locks on the doors because it seems like the ones currently in place are not solid enough to keep out intruders of any kind. I felt relatively safe there but I am from a place where security is a must! I also realize that it is quiet and most likely inactive at night but one never knows. If that issue gets addressed, I’ll have nothing else to recommend. We will definitely be back here!

An almost unpleasant experience turned great thanks to help from the manager.
We booked a room online the morning we’d be arriving after a stop at Crater Lake. When we arrived, we noticed a strong Pine-​Sol smell, but figured it would clear out so we went to dinner across the street. When we returned it was just as strong (cleaning product spill?) so we talked to the manager. They were about to close for the night and he had an unoccupied room (an upgrade) and moved us.
The cabins here do vary in size and condition. Our first cabin was pretty cramped and felt like the last remodel was 30 years ago … or more. The second was larger (king bed, large bathroom, big kitchen area) an recently redone: nice. The two cabins we saw were both clean.
Don’t expect phones (well, a pay phone in front of the office) or TV. The nearest cell phone reception is 11 miles one direction and 30 miles the other way. There is a café right across the street. This is a quiet, woodsy place. It was just what we needed.

I was long overdue for a extended weekend getaway. I was looking for something close to Crater Lake, with minimal people. The cabin we stayed in #6 was remodeled, suited 2 people perfectly and was as cozy as can be, with a full kitchen. Initially when we arrived we noticed no cell service, and limited wifi. By the end of day one I welcomed being disconnected from the world and forced to relax, which is exactly what I needed. I am already thinking about booking a cabin for the Summer or Fall and can’t wait to go back!

Stayed at the Union Creek Resort in what they call their «coziest» cabin for 2 nights. It was small, but had everything we needed and plenty of room for 2 adults and a dog! Cabin included a microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, hair dryer, toiletries and towels. The water pressure was fairly weak in the shower and the wi-​fi was hit or miss; however, I had no problem being completely disconnected to enjoy the outdoors for the weekend! It is in a GREAT location, being only a 20 minute drive from Crater Lake and surrounded by beautiful hiking trails. Staff was friendly and helpful and they had a store stocked with almost anything you may have forgotten. Will definitely come back!

I went here with a Groupon deal for two nights for $ 119, I believe. I know some have mentioned that it’s not a resort, but I would say it’s more of a retreat. I drove 6.5 hours all the way from Lacey, WA to use my Groupon deal. It was a nice drive to Prospect with practically every type of weather as you round your way through the hills and valleys and woods.
I pulled up to Union Creek at about 3pm and made my way to check in. I noticed right away that there was no cell service which wasn’t a problem as I really just wanted a way to relax as I was going to Hawaii right after that. So this was my pre-​vacation. It’s actually really nice to electronically detox yourself while you’re out here. This is why I mentioned it was more so a retreat from the norm and a slight return to the old fashioned days of finding things to do without being bothered with a cell, laptop, tablet, or portable electronics.
The front desk is also a store and has pay phone services in case you have to make a call. This place is very remote so be aware of this before you come. It is quite a drive to the next town that has gas so make sure you fill up when you can as there is no gas facility in town. There aren’t many choices in restaurants either. Again, this is a place to just get out and enjoy the nature around you.
I noticed right away the sound of water rushing somewhere near the woods of the cabins. It also smelled wonderfully fresh which was amazing. Bring all weather gear because it was quite chilly. I brought my dog, so she was ready to jump out and stretch her legs as soon as I made it to the cabin. She also noticed how cold it was and basically gave me «the look» like why are you making me do this.
The cabin itself was wonderful. I has one of the smaller rooms. It was perfect and cozy for 1 – 2 people. It was made from all natural woods so that gave it an extra appeal to me as it made it feel like you really were «roughin’ it» but not sleeping on the ground. The heater warmed the cabin up nice and quick and then my dog got down to munchin and crunchin. There was a refrigerator and microwave in case you needed them. The water was also uncommonly boiling hot, so test it so you don’t scald yourself.
Yes, the Wi-​Fi isn’t strong and comes and goes very quickly or sometimes doesn’t work at all. Again, I wasn’t trying to be connected to the rest of the world. I wanted to connect with my natural surrounding so the Wi-​Fi wasn’t a bother for me. Plus I had a free bottle of local wine to keep me company due to my Groupon deal.
Union Creek is a short drive to the majestic and awesomely beautiful Crater Lake, the oddly serene Natural Bridge Trail, & thunderous Rogue Gorge Viewpoint. So get out and take a walk. It’s about 1.5 hours to Canyonville which has a gas station and a casino. It’s also about a 2 – 3 hour drive to California or to the beach.
I felt completely safe out here aside from the deer that run out when you’re driving. The only con to this stay would be that I am not sure if I would pay the normal non-​Groupon price to stay here as it is kind of expensive for the minimal overall amenities. With that said, I would stay here again if I wasn’t so far away. It was a wonderful way to just get my mind together and truly relax and get some good rest.

Read all the reviews and were prepared for Backwoods Rustic — but it was clean, comfortable and had great amenities: fridge, toiletries, fresh linens, fresh towels, coffee maker, great heater (late April) that had an easy to adjust thermostat, and a picnic table and firepit we roasted marshmallows in. I only wish we could have stayed 2 nights. The store had everything we needed. They accommodated our late arrival with ease and a variety of convenient options including a later check out time. The rolling river was great to hear at night.
