The Barley Hound

Let me start by commenting on the service. The waiter was super slow and did not refill our waters in a promptly fashion. I went here with friends, and being the only vegetarian in the group, I found the food selection to be predominantly meat leaden and unappetizing. The prices were outrageously high too. My friends all ordered the duck fat fries and all fell ill soon after. Although I did not feel sick, it was unpleasant to be at a restaurant with such inadequate service, an expensive menu and limited vegetarian options. This restaurant is not for the faint hearted. If you are eating the lamb burger, for instance, make sure it is cooked to perfection. My friend complained of a bloody lamb burger after requesting a well done lamb burger and although I had the Cesar salad, it was mediocre and the dressing options were scarce. Save your money and go someplace where the burgers are well cooked and the eats are more kid friendly for people with kids. I can see this restaurant as a date night restaurant for experimental eaters, but it is not kid friendly and let’s just say crayons don’t come with the menu. For what’s it’s worth though, it’s an ok place that probably keeps riff raff out by using a fortress of high prices and exotic eats.

This is the kind of place that I would like to open. It looks like an old house from the North Park area of San Diego. We sat in the large front yard area which was great. Our group started with appetizers from the eclectic menu and I was surprised at how good the Scotch and Deviled Eggs were. They were both pretty unique to see on menus and the flavors were amazing. I think the Deviled Egg that day was Moroccan and the seasoning was very well balanced.
Everyone enjoyed their entrees while I had the steak and taters. I ordered the steak medium which came out perfectly cooked. Had I known it would be, I would have ordered medium rare. It is a small steak which sits on a large tater tot which rests on their b2 sauce. It’s not a large plate of food but flavorful.
Their cocktails were on point. I especially enjoyed their perfectly crafted Old Fashion. Their Whiskey Sour is very good and they use fresh squeezed juices instead of sweet and sour. The ladies really enjoyed their Bees Knees which is a Gin drink.
Our waitress was amazing. She was sweet, attentive and our mint water bottle was constantly replenished. The owner was checking on everyone and his involvement showed in all aspects. The service, food and drinks proved that they care about their customers experience instead of just going through the motions. I wish more did.

I went on a Saturday evening before going to an event at Yavapai College. They were busy, but not packed. There was no wait for a table, but most of the tables were full. I arrived with just under two hours to spare before I wanted to be at Yavapai College, which is about 5 minutes away.
Upon arriving there was no hostess. After 5 minutes I finally had to snag a waitress and ask if I seated myself or if someone would seat me. She went and found the hostess after about 5 minutes and I was seated on the front patio. I waited for 15 minutes in full view of the hostess, but nobody came to take my drink order or offer me water. I finally asked a passing waiter if I could get water and if there was a server assigned to my table. I told him how long I had been waiting. He apologized. I said I just wanted water. He brought a bottle of water and a glass. The bottle had a sprig of mint in it, which was a nice touch. After about 5 minutes more my server appeared. I was ready to place my order, a ‘Merica burger with fries.
Then the real wait began.
Just over 30 minutes after placing my order my food arrived. The food was hot, delicious, and my burger was cooked the way I ordered it. Their ketchup is a little odd, they season it. I had no complaints with the food other than how long it took for it to arrive.
After I ate, I waited for my check. After 15 minutes of not seeing my waiter, I asked another waiter if he could get me my check. My check arrived about 10 minutes later. The quickest part of the evening was the waiter processing my credit card.
Before leaving I headed to the restroom. There are only two tiny bathrooms in the place, and they are right next to the busy kitchen. People waiting in line to use the restroom are at risk of being bumped into or even worse by the waitstaff.
BOTTOM LINE — Excellent food. Horrific service. I will not be returning.

Let me start by saying I’ve been waiting 8 months to get here! Last time we were in town, we didn’t get a chance to go. It was recommended to us by Justin at Superstition Meadery last fall.
The Barley Hound is around the corner from the busy downtown area. It’s in an old house that clearly has been renovated. You enter via the patio, and we couldn’t pass up a chance to sit outside in the beautiful AZ spring weather. It’s a beautiful patio with lights strung across to give it a glow when the sun goes down. I felt like I was sitting on my patio or a friend’s while dining there.
To start, our waitress brought us water in a glass bottle with big sprigs of mint inside! Great idea — refreshing and not too overpowering as a palate cleanser. To start, I had a Berry Smash cocktail with rye whiskey, mint, & fresh berries. Very good and not sweet at all in case you were wondering about the berry part. My husband and I decided to share a couple small plates since we’ve been overdoing it since we got into town. That was definitely the way to go!
We got the truffle fries and the Li’l Shrimp Toast Sammie. I will need all my adjectives for this one. The flavors in that Sammie — shrimp cooked to just the right tenderness, pork belly (’nuff said), cilantro (I love it), and a spicy aioli. Even the toast was the perfect texture for all that flavor! It was quite the perfect bite. I liked the truffle fries and the garlic mayo they came with (there was also another sauce), but I wasn’t blown away like I thought I would be. I like that hand cut fries give a varying amount of texture due to the uneven cuts.
I also had a seasonal gimlet — choice of gin or vodka & paired with the seasonal shrub made in house. Today was basil. Such a refreshing drink! Perfect for spring. At this point, I was ready to stay here forever. Since we only had a couple small plates, we opted for a dessert. Today’s desserts were bread pudding & passion fruit cheesecake. Now, let me say that I normally like cheesecake, but any menu with something chocolate on it usually wins out. Today I went for it. Wow! My husband (who lives for cheesecake) & I agreed that it was the best we’ve had! Super creamy & fluffy. The passion fruit purée lent just the right amount of tartness. I’ll be dreaming about that for a while.
This place could easily sit in the Broad Ripple area back home in Indy. I’ll be sad when I have to leave without it!

Great service, food, drinks, ambiance. Overall one of the best gastropubs I’ve been to! Thank you Michaela for giving us a great first experience!

Fun, unusual and the food was fabulous! Taking the family tonight! Loved the whole experience!

Went to try a Scotch Egg which was a treat. Service was good and expensive salad not so good. No need to return. Been there, done that. I could see the many cracks in the walls of the Hotel Vendome from Barley Hound patio. Will leave that place to the bikers. I do respect the history, just would not sleep there.

Excruciatingly slow even though less than half full. Can’t really comment on anything other than the water since I had to leave after nearly an hour of waiting. Water is the only thing that I had ordered that had arrived.

What a great place to bring your dog and I have a enjoyable evening meal. We sat out on the porch and had a fantastic dinner. They are very dog friendly. The food is extremely eclectic in a good way.

Wonderful ambiance convenient near to motel. Excellent wait staff and the food is wonderful. I highly recommend this restaurant if your visiting Prescott Arizona.

One of our favorite places in Prescott (we’re locals). Very interesting menu that rotates seasonally.

First off the atmosphere, and outdoor seating were great. A great place for dining with your canine friends (they brought water for them 1^st off) so good start. We ordered a burger and salad, she paid extra for chicken on her salad which was food, but very scarce. I had a burger, n was not asked how to cook, and when it showed up was just average, not great, like some reviews. Sorry hate to write bad stuff, but you are sitting on a gold mine, serve good food for a reasonable price and you will have lines down the street. Best of luck.

Was excited for my first visit to Barley Hound last night. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations, but not because of the food. It’s definitely a hipster type place with interesting drinks and food choices. The music is too loud and lighting too low to see what you’re eating. I think I would only go back during the day when I could sit on what appears to be a great patio.

I was super excited to try The Barley Hound this past weekend in Prescott. The concept was spot on — killer location, awesome craft cocktails with fresh ingredients, and a food menu that featured interesting food choices!
Unfortunately the killer concept was poorly executed. We started off with cocktails, I got a whisky sour, and it was delicious. We started with the duck fat fries and Crispy IPA Chicken Wings — the duck fat fries severely lacked seasoning and the presence of the rich duck fat flavor that is typically found in delectable duck fat fries, the crispy IPA chicken wings were even more of a disappointment. They were not crispy at all — more soggy than anything else, and the chicken was severely dry. It’s served with blue cheese and buttermilk ranch dip — they were so bland that out of my entire group we weren’t able to differentiate the blue cheese to the buttermilk ranch dip.
I love duck — like LOVE duck… so when I saw the duck burger i knew it was something that I HAD to try! When it arrived I got what appeared to be a killer burger; presentation was beautiful, and I was stoked to dive into it. Unfortunately the burger was dry… I mean not kinda dry but really dry, which was shocking because A. It had a beautiful pink center and B. duck is fatty, I was sure they were going to grind in some good juicy duck fat into their meat mix. in addition to it being dry, it so sooo bland. I only ate a quarter of my burger, there was nothing duck about it — reminded me more of a beef burger than a duck burger. One of my friends got the duck burger as well and also left half of it behind.
One of my friends got the Citrus Osso Bucco, they described the flavors as flat… I had a bite and i couldn’t agree more. The outer layer of the shank was tough, the meat inside was dry.
I was surprised that our experience here was so poor considering the stellar Unilocal reviews. Maybe we went on an off night but I hate to say I won’t be back.

My family and I tried this restaurant on Saturday night and what a pleasant surprise!
We were immediately greeted by the hostess who informed us that it might be about a 20 minute wait. We said no problem and had a seat to wait. She and the rest of the staff updated us regularly about the status of our table and we were seated as quickly as possible.
Our server, Newton W. was terrific and very attentive. The MENU was very diverse. We ordered the Flat Iron steak and a few burgers. The Duck Burger and Duck Fat Fries are fantastic and I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to be a bit adventurous.
Additionally, the atmosphere and music was TOP NOTCH. I know this place hasn’t been open long, but they are definitely on the track to a having very successful future. I can’t wait to go back again in February and also want to try the patio in the Summer!

Went to Barley Hound last night again… This time to try their new fall menu. They didn’t disappoint. When we arrived we were promptly greeted with a smile & although they have filled the patio with heaters & a fireplace for the cooler weather we chose to eat inside. We started with drinks. (Me the gimlet & my husband a tasty Arizona beer) for apps the pickle jar, full of tasty picked vegetables & the scotch egg appetizer yolk was a little solid but still so tasty & I really loved the greens it was on as well. For entrées I had the «chicken fried» Scallops which were the so savory and the perfect blend of tenderness & crispyness:). My honey had the Osso Bucco on warm spinach it was really amazing and we debated whose was better. Of course at that point we couldn’t help but top it off with the bread pudding with whiskey butter sauce… Wow!
So with 2 apps, the 2 most expensive entrées on the menu, 4 cocktails & dessert we ended up just at $ 100. Which for such great ambiance, fabulous food & swift friendly service is a bargain in my book. Can’t wait to go back & try some of the other new items.
I should also mention that when we left there was quite a crowd in the bar area & on the patio, I think it would be a great place to meet friends for cocktails & sit around the fire on a cool winter night

Very cool atmosphere. We have ate here twice. Both times we sat on the patio which I believe is one of the best patio dinning on Prescott.
The restaurant specializes in locally grown organic foods. We both found the menu to be rather limited. My food preference is pretty basic, but my wife loves to try different creative type foods. I ordered a basic burger. It was tasty. When I asked for ketchup for the fries, the server let me know that they make their own ketchup with curry. They have no other type ketchup. The second time I went I brought a few good packets of Heinz ketchup. My wife trued the salmon and artichoke dip. The salmon was okay, very small and over priced. Because th items were just okay and we wouldn’t order again.
I hope the restaurant changes the menu and gets the prices in line. Overall I would go again, not necessarily for the food but rather the atmosphere and patio. The service was excellent.

Great new restaurant about a block from the square in Prescott. We sat on the patio and had a wonderful time with the other convivial guests. Inside, the music was a bit loud for our tastes but we enjoyed the outside air (and rainbow). The food choices were a bit narrow as were the beer choices but what we had was delicious.
For only being open for two weeks it is something special with great potential. The coveted fifth star? A more varied menu with some healthy choices, more beers, and better service. Given their youth this should not be construed as criticism but as hoped for maturing into the 5 star establishment that it seems to be developing into.

Not just your average pub food, Chef Harley Guy steps it up with locally-​sourced food, innovative flavors, and dishes you won’t find anywhere else done in the area.
From smoky pork rinds that are still crackling when they arrive at your table to a «20 Mile» salad (exactly that, everything in the salad changes with the seasons and is from within a 20 mi radius), to Verlasso Salmon that would make you think you are dining seaside, it tastes so fresh… You won’t be disappointed.
The finely crafted cocktails and liquor selection also can’t be beat. $ 7 for a craft cocktail with fresh-​squeezed juices? You won’t find that anywhere else…
