Poway Gymnastics

My daughter started her gymnastic endeavour at Poway Gymnastics about 3 years ago. It has been an amazing journey for her, thus far. As adoring parents we have watched our daughter grow from a true novice to the sport to a legitimate contender for her age and level. To watch her transform from a quite curious little girl to a little power house full of muscle with crazy athletic skills has been truly breath taking over the past few years. I’m mean that’s really our little girl doing those weird named tricks on a skinny beam, a bouncy floor, bars that are not level and vault that looks like some one put a random object in the middle of a perfect run way made of carpet.
As a fitness trainer and motivator for the past fifteen years I recognise the hard work and leadership it takes to motivate a person to achieve personal goals never thought attainable. I must say I’m extremely grateful for the coaches at Poway Gymnastics. They have a cohesive coaching staff filled with years of experience and expertise in gymnastics. Their collective dedication to each gymnast as an individual and as a team member I have only witness a few times in my personal athletic career.
Some of the notable coaches are coach Tony, coach Jessica, coach Theresa, coach Erica and coach Nicole. Collectively, they have created a culture that inspires young gymnast to keep coming back to the gym knowing that it’s going to take hard work and long practices if they wish to have any success in their gymnastic pursuits. I know my daughter’s passion for gymnastics is seeded by her earlier contact by all the above mentioned coaches when she first started. All of them have had a positive influence on her. She has learned failure and how to get back up and overcome it. And she has had her little taste of success along the way as well. I’m confident none of the lessons and achievements she has experienced in gymnastics could have been reached without the superior team of coaches at Poway Gymnastics. I applaud all of them for their consummate professionalism and dedication to the sport of gymnastics and to the young athletes they continue to believe in.
Poway Gymnastics is a nice facility but it’s the intangibles that make this gym the place my daughter wants to be. All the way from the coaching staff to the many teammates who have become her «besty» over the past few years. I know if she were to quit gymnastics today everything she has gained in strength, skills, discipline, work ethic and confidence will translate to whatever she decides to pursue. These are some of the intangibles Poway Gymnastics has gifted to my daughter… simply priceless.

I have never written a Unilocal review, but felt compelled after reading a recent review. We have been at Poway for several years. The coaches have high expectations of their athletes at Poway Gymnastics and rightly so this is an amazing and tough sport. The girls on team train hard and love their coaches and gym. You can’t expect to step on to the team without being able to perform specific skills. Being on this team is a privilege not a right. The coaches have been great to my daughters and despite the prior review both of my girls have advanced several levels in the last year alone and have been successful at meets and recently at national qualifying events. My girls love their teammates and we are proud of all of these girls on team. If you are looking for a coaches who care about the girls on the team and want them to succeed this is the place for you.

This place is a joke! not only did I place my daughter who an experienced gymnast since a small girl in their class, under the assumption that she was trying out for team, then she gets placed in baby beginning class at 10 years old! then finally she gets placed in intermediate, learning how to do basic she learned in kindergarten, then when I tell the coaches about my issues they tell me pretty much that they will never place her team and that there is girls that have been there for years and not on team. Don’t go to this place! they take your money and walk around in confusion and have your children do hand stands and no actual gymnastics! Worst place
daughters now at a real gym and on a competitive team kicking their teams butt!

We recently had my son’s 4^th birthday here. The two coaches did a great job guiding the little ones through a huge obstacle course with trampolines, tunnel, and ball pit for 50 minutes. They all had a great time !
The party room was a bit crammed but still fine for a smaller group. Overall I highly recommend this place as a birthday venue, with one caveat: the 90 minute time slots are too short; everything felt rushed.

Crazy. That’s all I can say. If you would like to get screamed at, go there. They dish it out for free.

Your team have helped shaping the girls, teaching them the values as a gymnast, the disciplines, team spirits, and life endurance. And most of all: fairness among the girls.
Money and times are well spent here.

Personally they do not even deserve one star the people who run this place obviously don’t know anything about running a gym I went to one of their competitions at a hotel not only a cost 20 dollars to park they charge you 15 dollars to stand that is admissions to stand at a professional baseball game they did not have enough seating for people to come watch their kids to compete they need to not running gym or hire people who know how to run a gym I am disgusted with the personnel and how they treat their customers

I am so disappointed with this gym. I have been disappointed since day one (12 months ago) but they are really the only game in town for competition level gymnastics. Because they know they have a monopoly, they are able to treat the participants and the parents with no compassion. With the exception of the introductory/​placement class, none of my daughter’s coaches have made any effort to update me on her progress or give me any confidence that she’s getting anything out of this experience. When I’ve tried to ask, I’m ushered out of the gym (only gymnasts are allowed!) and dismissed because the coach is too busy with the next class/​group. The most striking display of how little this gym values the parents & parental involvement is demonstrated every evening I sit in the small glassed-​in viewing area ALONE. The gym is full of more than 20 gymnasts (I counted 28 on a few occasions) and I am the ONLY parent there watching … for two hours! I have three other kids that are not in gymnastics but I want to follow my daughter’s progress and celebrate her accomplishments as she continues in classes so I make the time but PG encourages parents to simply pay the dues and «check out».
I speak of the upper levels of the lessons as my daughter began as an 8 yr-​old in the intermediate classes. Coaches Erica and Erin truly appear to hate their job — I don’t know if they hate children, hate teaching or both. There is no warmth from nearly any of the coaches — no hugs, no high-​fives, no «great job!“s — just endless corrections and nit-​picking. I get that high level athletes need to be pushed & driven but athletes can rise to an elite level without being elitist or treated coldly. Beyond the Advanced Intermediate lessons, gymnasts are to move to the pre-​team or a similar grouping called Devo. After many months with my daughter in Devo, I see that she will likely never get the support to truly move to the competition team; the Devo group is a small number of girls working with only one, uninterested coach and they’re left to «have fun» and work on the competition compulsory routines with little rigor, relegated to use only the parts/​equipment in the gym not being monopolized by the team girls. And with Coach Erin sucking the fun out of every moment, that leaves these gymnasts to move around the gym & sadly go through the motions while they watch the team girls with idolization yet no hopes of ever joining them. If there was another option for competition-​level gymnastics close to Poway, I would leave PG in a heartbeat!

My daughter tried a class to see if she/​we wanted to use this particular gym. The instructor herself seemed friendly enough, but not outstanding. And, the woman who accepts paperwork was very rude and would not even make eye contact with me. I chose not to give them any money based on the cool reception from the registration process and lukewarm coach.

My daughter went to their gymnastics camp — she didn’t hate it but didn’t love it either. Looked like they sis a lot of standing around (my daughter said they were supposed to be ‘relaxing’. She LOVES TRC Gymnastics in Del Mar, so the difference is very clear. Coaches at Poway look like they are phoning it in.

My 3 year old has been going here for about 4 months. The gym is a good size and there’s a viewing room for parents to watch their kids. The staff is wonderful, she LOVES her coach Michelle. She looks forward to going each week, and we keep enrolling her each month! I would highly recommend this gym to anyone with kids looking to get involved with gymnastics.

Update on a previous review, as my daughter has been going here for quite some time. Tony and his coaches are well-​respected and tough, but my daughter completely adores all of them.
In reflection of those reviews that are complaining about a recent competition… this was a HUGE meet, with nearly 2000 girls competing. There would be few places in San Diego, dare I say NONE, that would be able to house all those that wanted to watch. The meet was run in sessions to try and alleviate some of the crowds, but alas, there are still a lot of bodies that travel near and far to San Diego for a meet. The nature of a large competition means there will be crowds.
Poway Gymnastics provides my daughter a home away from home. Tony geniunely cares about the mental well-​being of his team, and makes sure that the girls are a team first before they are competing gymnasts.
Coach Jessica is also strict but yet my daughter can’t leave the gym and won’t leave without running over to give her a hug.
Poway Gym, thanks for all you’ve provided for my daughter. The smiles, the comradery, and the great gymnastics for her to be proud of… what more could a parent ask for?
