Nicholas Painting & Decorating

I hired Nicholas painting to paint the interior of my home. Not only was both John’s professional, they were knowledgeable and helped explain the proper products for my needs. They did a great job painting my home and I am very happy with the outcome.

I setup an estimate with John and he quoted me a very reasonable rate to paint two bedrooms and doors. They showed up on time and did a wonderful job for me. They were very professional and I plan on using them again to paint a bathroom and my exterior of my home. These guys are the best!

Really bad experience and very expensive for shoty workmanship. We hired John Nicholas through Home Depot Nhance. He is also a franchise owner for Nhance in North County San Diego. He quoted all the procedures for the Nhance technique, quoted us four days of work for our large kitchen with 22 door faces, 10 drawers and boxes. The very first day when I came home it was all off. He painted in our garage with the door wide open for dirt and debris to blow in on the paint. He hand painted vs spraying (when he told us they would be sprayed) and it looked it! Roller bumps and brush marks all over. To top it off, he had primer and a first coat of paint on everything the first day. He did not clean or prep the area as he stated he would. When we noticed this we called him out on it. We asked him why he hadn’t filled open joints as stated, why the toe kick was not all the way painted and why it had cat hair and dirt and debris gobbed under the paint! Clearly it was because he did not clean. The paint started peeling, cracking and coming off within a matter of days. To top it off, he had our kitchen (done) in two days! He left the drawer faces on when painting and there was paint inside my boxes! It looked like a child painted. This was supposed to be a professional paint job. To makes things worse, Nhance’s lead trainer backed him up and said they would paint our large kitchen in two days, regardless of the disturbing pictures! Home Depot however was not happy and very nice to deal with. They made it right and said they do not condone this sort of contractor practice. Prep is the most important part and he didn’t even clean the wood nor around them as stated. Why is it that someone would quote you 4500.00 to paint a kitchen and then come in and slap paint on and feel ok with degrading someone’s perfectly nice wood cabinets? I cried it was so bad.
Nhance and Home Depot’s own website states a 10×10 kitchen should take 3 – 5 days and starts at 2600.00. Why then did he quote me four days for a 20×20 kitchen and be done in 2? With two guys and he left the second day and left one guy who clearly didn’t have painting experience.
Please feel free to reach out to me for pictures of how bad it was. I had just painted my linen closest and they came out very nice for my first time because I prepped them and took my time. I do not recommend hiring Nhance of North County San Diego as their practices for painting are not a long term solutions and they condoned this sort of practice (not following their own technique!). I do not recommend hiring John Nicholas, as he sees nothing wrong with slapping paint on dirty cabinets and calling it a day.
We had a professional come in and he pointed out all that was wrong and stated there is no way to properly paint a kitchen this size in two days. He quoted less, even with having to undo all the poorly applied paint and reprep! After Home Depot, Nhance and Mr Nicholas paid us the difference to have a real professional cabinet painter come out and fix the issue, we hired Dream Cabinets by Stan out of San Marcos. He fully tented the kitchen, taped and masked off everything with paper and the like. He spent 6 days painting our kitchen cabinets. Prepping etc. He took the door faces and entire drawer assembly to his workshop to be painted properly. Which is what a professional will do or they will create a tent. This was promised by John and never done! For nearly half the amount, my cabinets were sanded and cleaned and properly prepped and primed before spraying. I got new hardware hung and other things. Most of all, I got a professional, long lasting paint job. Not one that peels in two days because the paint is not adhering to wood, but rather grease and old film that was never removed prior to painting.
Hire John Nicholas if you want to pay twice as much for poor workmanship and then have him accept the quality of his work as being good

In 2007 my wife and I purchased a home in the Poway area. The house was a bit of a fixer upper and needed a little more than paint. I contacted contractors to come give estimates on some of the work we needed to have done and then we met with several painting companies. Nicholas Painting was one of the painting contractors to come provide us with an estimate. When I first met John I thought he was one of the job foremen (he had on painters shorts and had some paint in his hair). As we started to talk he explained he is the owner and it is a family business (both he and one of his sons run the company).
John was friendly, knowledgeable and he even gave me some of his industry contacts for other work I needed done, including an electrician and a general contractor who put in a new front door for us.
A couple of days later we received his estimate, I wish I could say he was the best priced, but he wasn’t. His price was in the middle of the road, fair to say the least. We decided to go with John and his crew and we couldn’t be happier. They were courteous, helpful and did a great job. John even helped me patch up some drywall that was damaged. His crew was on top of keeping each area clean and they were all very nice. His son, was very helpful and kept things running smoothly.
When they were finished my wife was extremely happy and that says a lot!
FAST FORWARD A FEW YEARS:
I just rented a new office space and it was in bad shape (hey I got a great deal, so I figured I would spend some cash fixing it up). I decided to try to contact John @ Nicholas Painting again, hoping he was still in business, guess what… he is! I know I am corny, but in these times you never know. Anyway he came out again to give me an estimate, which I compared to the two others I received and this time he was the lowest. He said something about a small repeat client discount.
His crew (which still consists of his son and a couple of others) came in during the night (since it is an office) and knocked out the job in no time. We used some bold colors and it included some custom striping on a few walls, everything came out amazing. Even the lines of the stripes were crisp (no paint bleeding onto the other colors — which involves a painters «trick» which they showed me how to do).
Again, we could not be happier with Nicholas Painting — They did what they said they would do in the time they said they would do it and charged me what they said they would charge me.

My wife and I are saving up to have John «renew» our cabinets next year, he claims to have an amazing product which can «renew» wood with no harsh chemicals or sanding!
I recommend John and his crew highly to anyone who wants a great paint job that is going to hold up for a fair price!
