Advanced Care Veterinary Hospital

I found Advanced Veterinary on Unilocal a couple of years ago after looking for a vet that was closer to home. I gave them a try and could not be happier. Dr. Perry is the BEST! When she met us we had a senior Black Lab and two cats in our fur family. She has been wonderful with all of them. A couple of months ago we had to say goodbye to our Lab and it was such a painful thing to do after almost 15 years together. Dr. Perry was so caring and thoughtful thru the whole process. The staff was very sensitive to the situation as well. I have always felt they have the animals best interest at heart and treat each of them as if they are their own. I would recommend Dr Perry and her staff to anyone looking for a trustworthy clinic that won’t over charge you and will put your pets first.

Advanced Veterinary Care is a great place to take your pet for wellness checks and when they are sick or injured. We have been taking our two senior doxies there since we adopted them at 8 years old, 18 months ago. They have each had a number of health problems due to age and probably prior neglect (they are rescues). We have seen all the doctors there at one time or another and have been impressed by the consistent professional and gentle care each has given our beloved little guys. The staff is skilled and kind and the follow up from both the vets and staff is amazing. We feel we have found a gem in AVC and even though there are a lot of other, closer choices for us, we will gladly make the drive and highly recommend them.

I am still teary-​eyed as I write this.
My then 4 year old rescue cat, Luna, had been sick last year and I took her to my then vet about 15 minutes away near Scripps. She was getting thin and becoming a picky eater. She also was drinking a lot of water. They ran a bunch of blood tests ($$$$) and they were all inconclusive, though the vet suspected a kidney issue. He wanted to to an ultrasound or CT ($$) and I said «let me try something else first.» I brought her back home and catered to her every need with food. She gained weight and got better on her own.
Fast forward to about a week ago. She’s now five. She suddenly got very picky with food and started drinking a lot. I tried tempting her with canned tuna, and treats. She started to come back for a few days and then abruptly refused food all together last Sunday. I started feeding her with an eyedropper, watered down wet food. She was still drinking a ton of water. Since I hadn’t been happy with my then vet, I saw Advanced Care’s reviews on Unilocal and called the day after Memorial Day. They were able to see her at 11:30AM that day. Dr. Hiller was just amazing. She suggested we try hydrating her, and run some blood tests, give her some anti nausea meds and an appetite stimulant. She spent a ton of time with us and got Luna’s records from the other vet. Her tech explained what we could do and costs and I went ahead with most of it. As they were taking blood, Luna pretty much «cat fainted» and they had to give her oxygen. Dr Hiller cautioned me that Luna was very sick and might not make it through the day. She said she was at the office till 7PM and I should call around 5PM and let them know if Luna perked up. So I took her home, isolated her from my other cats, and offered her food and water. She was so sweet and so sick. After a few hours of watching her not eat, not use the box, camp out at her water bowl, lay flat on the floor and moan, and climb back into the carrier (telling me she was done), I called the office and said, «we need to bring her back. She’s hurting.» The office said to bring her in at 6:30.
My 17 year old son came with me and was there when Dr. Hiller put Luna down around 7:20 last night. She explained what she was doing and what to expect. Luna went very fast after the injections, showing us that she was, indeed, very ill and I had done the right thing. Since she’d been sick last year, Dr. Hiller suspected a latent serious issue that had come back.
The entire office from Jenn to Vanessa, to the techs and the docs was so considerate and gentle with this fragile cat mom. Luna got so sick so fast: a month ago she was fine. It was too early for her to go, but her time. I am so sad about this, but I am sure we did the right thing.
As a result of this week’s experience my two other cats will have a new vet: One I trust, that doesn’t over charge, that offers options, that listens. This was Luna’s gift to me.
Plus, I just found out Dr. Hiller went to the University of Michigan. I’m from Ann Arbor.

What an amazing hospital. The vets are so compassionate, educated, and honest. Great bedside manner. This definitely isn’t sterile like most vets offices. You can tell they truly care about your pet and you. The try and save you money where they can and help you make the best decision for your pet. I’ve always felt like if I don’t want to do «all» the testing that they require, or all the shots I was a bad person but really I’m just more of a natural kind of girl and they completely respected that since they are more holistic based. LOVE THAT!!!
We unfortunately had to put our dog of 10 – 11 years down last week as there was no real options and he went down so fast. They let me hold him in my arms as they put him down and then leave out the back door when I was ready so that I didn’t have to walk out in waiting room all upset. They arranged for a paw print for us and cremation service which was so reasonably priced. Then we got a wonderful hand written card from all the staff… what a gift! Wow am I really in SD!!! I felt like I was in some small wonderful hometown vet office. Thank you for being so wonderful we love you guys and you truly made such a difference in ours and our pets lives!

The staff is wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable! You can definitely see that they are all passionate about animals!

I began bringing my adopted puppy, Sienna, here recently this year. I’ve been here twice, and each time both Sienna and I were treated with professionalism, and with an attentive and caring staff. We saw Dr Laura Halsey, and I really liked her. She got down on the floor while examining Sienna, which I liked. She was very thorough in her examination, and took extra time to ensure my new pet and I were off to a good start, covering everything from medical care to pet insurance to training. Her vet notes on my receipt had helpful websites and other useful information in caring for Sienna. This is my first time having a puppy, and I really appreciated Dr Halsey taking the time with me.

Amazing service! They are always friendly and professional. My pugs had terrible flees when we first moved to the area, with the help of the vet here they are now flee free!

Great spot for the furry members of your family. Very courteous staff that always takes the time needed. Two thumbs up to everyone from the Drs, vet techs, and front office staff. Prices are reasonable/​competitive and I have never felt like they were trying to upsell me on anything.

There are no words for the veterinary clinic or its staff. I came here almost three months ago after adopting my American Bulldog/​Boxer mix, Blossom (Awesome Blossom as the staff call her). Instantaneously I felt a sense of relief that my dog was in good hands. A few weeks ago, my fur baby had a slight accident that led us going straight to the clinic. It was 20 minutes until closing and Dr. Gordon and his staff stayed and ran tests and referred me to a 24 hour hospital (while also trying to keep me calm). They checked on me multiple times during the day to check on Blossom’s well being. Dr. Haley is an absolute doll! She definitely treats each pet as if it were her own! The front desk staff and assistants, man, if your dog isn’t spoiled, they will definitely make them spoiled. I’ve never seen animals so excited to come to the vet until I came here. Clearly the best clinic in Poway! Thank you all for what you do!

I got my very first dog adopted through a rescue house. She is 2 years old and seems to be in great health. Choosing a pet healthcare place was stressful for me as I had no experience in the matter. I found ACVH online and saw they had amazing reviews. Not only that, I could walk there with my pup! Scheduling the first appointment was incredibly easy and the person who answered the phone was very courteous. When we came in, the front desk staff and office manager were all incredibly polite, professional, caring and exuded an air of clinical competence. We were able to see Dr. Halsey and she was amazing! She and Elizabeth gave me a lot of pointers regarding care and behaviors for my pup and they were able to calm her down pretty easily. Afterwards, the phone calls and followups with test results were both prompt and informative. I think I made the right choice choosing ACVH!

I don’t have any specific stories to share, just an overall, every-​single-​time, glowing review. I’m very particular about my dogs’ care, to the point that some would call me fanatical, and I’m extremely particular about their veterinarian.
That said, I trust Advanced Care Veterinary Hospital implicitly and will never go anywhere else as long as I live in San Diego. Dr. Gordon and Dr. Halsey, with whom I’ve had the most experience, are competent, compassionate, and extraordinarily attentive. They genuinely care for the pets they treat, and unlike a lot of veterinarians I have encountered over the years, they really do listen to you, as your pet’s best friend and greatest advocate, to come up with a comprehensive approach to care that includes both traditional and holistic therapies. Even saying they go «over and above» is an understatement.
I’ve never felt pressured at Advanced Care, their costs are very reasonable, and the clinic staff is fantastic, as well. Amazing!

I can’t say enough about this vet hospital. I have now met with 3 of the vets and they are all wonderful with my dog. During my last visit I met with Dr. Gordon. He was wonderful at assessing and treating the problem. He gave me his email and I wrote him the next day with a question. Within less than one hour he responded to my question and eased my mind. I also take my dog in regularly to have his nails clipped. The techs that work with him are wonderful, warm and friendly and although I’m sure that it’s not his favorite thing to do, he always comes out wagging his tail. I would highly recommend this veterinary hospital.

I have just posted many pictures of my little Keats. I’m sure they can’t all be added to ACVH’s site but they will be the last ever to be posted here. With great and deep sadness I had to put Keats down on Jan 2^nd. He was only 2 yrs old. He had a life full of tragedies, afflictions, and illnesses, but thru ACVH he always had the very best of care. All the Vets and staff knew Keats. He didn’t enjoy the vet, but few cats do, right? But I do think he knew they loved him as much as I loved him. Since his passing they have continued to reach out to me in my grief. I am comforted that I had them all with me when the time came… when I had to let go. I cannot say enough about their total dedication to treat each and every animal as if they belonged to them personally. They are the best in the area. If you are seeking a new vet, please do not pass them by.

ACVH sees all four of our cats, and their staff is full of love and intelligence. This place is just dripping with people who obviously love what they do. Dr. Halsey, in particular, is a rare combination of clinical professionalism and easy warmth.
Cats hate everything about going to the vet. They hate the carriers, the car, the unfamiliar scents, everything. The clinicians at ACVH make this vital process as painless as possible, and have an uncanny ability to provide clear and concise explanations and advice while they are deftly probing your pets. It’s pretty awesome.
Love this place.

We moved down to SD about a year ago, I went to a vet a lot closer to our house, but felt like I was always being upsold or told to do procedures that would put my dogs at risk for an optional treatment… until I found Advanced Care Veterinary Hospital. I read all the reviews and was really impressed so thought I would check them out. I have taken both my dogs in and each time they were friendly, honest and never pushing me to do un-​necessary procedures. My dogs were well taken care of and the staff was great.
I also want to add that their follow up was beyond expectations, when my dog was sick, they called multiple times to make sure he was getting better — was awesome!
Highly recommend!

I’ve got to update my review to 5 stars. My dog is sick… really sick. We have no idea what is wrong with him, something to do with his liver. It has been very worrying and frustrating to keep going back (we are now going to a specialty vet) and forth for different tests. Dr. Perry has been extremely helpful. She has gone well above and beyond… working off the clock in the evenings talking and texting us on her personal cellphone, speaking to the specialty vets and making sure that they had all of the information they needed to continue with Beamer’s treatment and tests. To me, that is a someone who really cares about animals and as a pet owner, that is the type of veterinarian I like to take my pet to.

UPDATE:
Returned a few weeks after discovering a small lump on the other dogs hind leg. Sent Dr. Gordon a distressed email Saturday evening, and as I expected, a response!
We went through scheduling possibilities and he made it happen that same evening to see Dr. Halsey Monday morning. Upon check-​in, Dr. Halsey demonstrated her care by listening to the situation, obtaining tissue samples, and taking proactive measures to diagnose the issue. You can ask all the questions in the world, they are patient skilled listeners.
When the results from the lab were ready (a few days later), Dr. Halsey called around 9pm to deliver the good news. The results were as good as we hoped, and the extra touch with a late night call was appreciated.
The doctors are delightful and deliver high quality care. Both (Dr. Gordon and Halsey) respond promptly and are skilled listeners. We’re fortunate to have Advanced Care Vet hospital nearby, just hoping future visits are more routine.

1ST REVIEW:
After receiving an inconclusive diagnosis from a previous local vet (name withheld) about an abnormal tumor on our dogs paw, we decided to obtain a tertiary opinion.
Unilocal helped us locate our new favorite veterinary clinic, led by Dr. David Gordon. After reading all the favorable reviews we felt great about pursuing Dr Gordon for a tertiary opinion.
Long story short, Dr Gordon confirmed my conclusion about the former vets inconclusive opinion on our dogs paw… What a relief!# we didn’t question the former vets (obtained 2 opinions from the same clinic) conclusion because we’re not veterinarians, but we just didn’t believe a abnormal growth should be ignored…
Dr Gordon performed the same procedures to obtain tissue sample, saw the same results, but the difference here is, he strongly suggested further analysis by a cytologist! Went on with the doctors orders, confirmed the tumor was cancerous and we are more than grateful that we found Dr Gordon to provide the treatment. Throughout the whole ordeal he kept us thoroughly informed and in real time! We have never received this level of treatment of the past 2 veterinarians, most of which don’t provide direct access to the doctors. Treatment was a huge success, dog in recovery and cancer didn’t spread, what more can you ask for?
The office hours are convenient, he demonstrates his passion and care for your pet, and feels like he strives to treat pets as if they are his own. Never, ever met such a passionate, through, patient, veterinarian in my life. His communication is unconventional (in a good way), meaning, he was working on our case in the early morning hours when I was counting sheep!
The only caveat, Dr Gordon is only available on Wednesday, and his first impression was so remarkable we are willing to wait. The entire staff is friendly, and plenty of on-​site parking
We plan on bringing the rest of the troop to be patients of Dr Gordon!

I wanted to write an update specifically to give kudos to Dr. Halsey. Really, I cannot say enough great things about her. My pup was diagnosed with renal failure and it hit me pretty hard. She strikes the right balance between compassion, hope, and staying realistic. She also takes her time to explain everything to you thoroughly and answer all of your questions. With her major assistance, we’re working on a treatment plan to help slow the progression of the disease and make my pup as comfortable as possible for however long she has left.
She and the entire staff have taken such good care of my Lucy this week. I’m truly grateful to them.

My mom and I brought in our old gentleman dog, Rudy, to Dr Tara Haley. Dr Haley was so kind, and loving. She gave him a thorough exam, and spent loads of time with him! Dr Haley’s assistant, Christy, cuddled and comforted Rudy during his check up. She explained everything in detail, and treated our old boy with wisdom, and respect.
We also love Dr Perry!
The whole office was warm and welcoming. Their love for animals, shines through their actions!

Finding a vet that you like is seriously one of the most stressful things to do. After moving from the Bay and away from our usually Veterinarian (which by the way was no comparison to this one) we felt that it was important to have a place to take our Chiefy.
Now, Chief is a Pitbull and to be completely honest my boyfriend and I are always very nervous when he encounters new people, especially those that are handling him when he’s in pain.
After two visits and a follow up call in seriously so set on making this place our main Vet to take our baby boy. The staff and Dr. Haley all seemed like animal lovers who care more about the patient than the money, which you don’t find too often.
Needless to say, this place is worth the try because you and your pet will be so happy with the outcome!
