Red Cap Cleaners

I came in on a Monday with a bridesmaid dress that needed to be hemmed at bottom and shoulder straps. Perette told me it would be finished by Thursday or Friday and that I should call on Thursday to check. Sure enough, I called on Thursday, and they told me it was ready. I rushed to get there after work. Once I got there and gave the girls my ticket — they searched around for my dress for a few minutes which made me nervous. Then, Perette comes out and tells me that the guy who makes alterations has the dress and he’s at another location. I asked her why I was told earlier in the day that it was ready — she said it was ready but then he realized he forgot to hem the bottom so he had to take it back. I remained calm and told her I’d be back tomorrow. I picked up my dress on Friday and paid $ 100.
On Saturday, the day of the wedding, I put on the dress about 30 minutes before I had to leave. THEY DID NOT HEM THE LENGTH!!! It was so long that I needed to switch shoes to higher heels and tuck in the dress at the waist to lift it up. I was furious! $ 100 for a half-​done job.
I suffered throughout the night and made the best out of it. I couldn’t wear my low comfy heels and got blisters on my feet from the higher uncomfortable heels. I also had to constantly tuck my dress in at the waisteline throughout the night.
On Tuesday, I went back to Red Cap Cleaners and spoke with Perette. She gave me a $ 50 refund and put my dress behind the counter. When I was ready to walk out I asked for my dress back. SHE TOLD ME SHE WANTED TO DONATE IT… I told her that its my dress that I paid $ 200 for and it is MY CHOICE if I want to donate it or not. She was reluctant to give me my dress back. I have never written a Unilocal review, nor have I ever experienced something so profoundly un-​ethical. I will never return to this place even if its the last tailor on earth.

All of the Red Cap Cleaners in Poughkeepsie are fantastic. They are all owned by the same people — as far as I can tell. Sometimes their employees aren’t 100% helpful, but the owners bend over backwards to make sure I’m happy. They dry-​cleaned my wife’s sequined dress without melting any beads and hemmed the tuxedo I wore for my wedding. I couldn’t recommend a better place anywhere.

I’ve been going to this particular Red Cap Cleaners for dry cleaning and tailoring for a couple years now. The staff is super-​friendly. I’ve never had any problems with my clothes. Even though the place is supposed to close at 6 p.m. on weekdays, the staff still keeps the door unlocked after 6 if they are still there. They don’t get mad at all if you get there past the closing time. That’s how nice they are.
