The West Hills Martini Glass Light Display is yet another classic in Portland’s Christmas repertoire. You can see it as you are driving I-​5 Southbound fairly close to the exits for Portland State and Providence Park. It’s been around as long as I can remember, and it’s not Christmas without it. I think the thing that makes it stand out is that it’s modern and not particularly all that Christmas-​ey, but it shows up every year at Christmas. It’s more geared towards a New Year theme, but who cares! I still love it.
There was a little controversy a couple of years ago over the fact that it might disappear, but the gentleman who bought the property from the original owner went to bat, gussied up the display, and put it back up for viewing. Now that’s a real Portlander!
I forgot I had posted this in 2012, but here’s a brief history:
The best part of this display is that you can «have» a martini and drive (but don’t stare at the display too long, get all happy, and then take a header). Most of all, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. That’s what lighting displays are all about!
