The Standard

If they’re not Portland’s largest company they are up there, They are a fortune 1000 company (in 2006 #721) They have holdings in Insurance (about 8.5 million people covered), investment advisors and real estate. Their annual revenues are around $ 2 billion.
They started as Oregon Life Insurance Company founded in Portland by German immigrant Leo Samuel in 1906. Today they use The Standard as their name as their more visible name (on their headquarters etc but their official name is StanCorp Financial Group which is where their NYSE abbreviation SFG comes from.
Their headquarters are in the Standard Insurance Center.

I’m so over this company as are many of our members with AFSCME 2076… Now their adjusters think they are Doctors too… All over $ 475.00 omg… Time for a new company… Not happy at all

I miss the days when I used to work in this building.
Some things have changed since I worked in this building about 5 years ago. For instance, the elevators are such that you enter your floor number on a key pad before entering the elevator. My favorite part of the elevator trip is the super sexy voice that announces your arrival — it’s like a breathless Marilyn Monroe voice.
Down on the ground floor you will find quite an eclectic collection of shops: a flower shop, a chocolate shop, a beauty salon, a jewelry shop and a Persian rug gallery.
Back in my day, the little café, also found on the ground floor used to serve really boring cafeteria food. Now that my department is banished to the Godforsaken suburbs it is called Outtakes and they have really fancied it up and they have some pretty decent grub. I can see the menu from my work computer and I feel rather jealous because the little café where I work is the same company, but seriously smaller and therefore lacking in the choices that the downtown folks have.
I miss you Center Building!

This building is home to basically Stoel Rives law firm and a few other offices. It’s got a classic old-​school look on the outside, but actually features some pretty decent amenities on the inside that make it an ok building to work in.
First off, the elevators have a cool pre-​programmed system where you enter your destination floor in the lobby and the system tells you which elevator to get in, and then you are whisked to your floor. No buttons in the elevator. You kind of feel out of control, but there’s no chance of others changing their minds mid trip and pressing all these extra floor buttons. And it seems futuristic. Which is kinda cool.
They also have a little elevated eating/​smoking area on the mezzanine floor our back (on the river side), which is a crafty escape from the bustle of the sidewalk a mere floor below. A decent place to dine on a nice day.
Finally, they have Outtakes in the basement, which is more a cafeteria than anything else, but can come in handy when you want a simple, reasonably priced meal for breakfast or lunch. When I used to work in the Fox Tower, I was stuck with Elephants, which is tasty but incredibly expensive, or I had to leave the building. This option was always a nice one to have.
Overall, while it’s not the tallest, newest, fanciest building in town, it does the trick, and the location is pretty great too.
