The Portland Wine Bar and Winery is a wine bar, winery tasting room and wine store in Downtown Portland, Oregon that specializes in bringing you the best local, handcrafted, small batch wines from the Pacific Northwest (OR and WA) ranging from Pinot noir to Tempranillo, Pinot gris to Gruner Veltiner. We make our own wines from the highest quality fruit available and carry wines from other small wineries that also focus on high quality, small production, not mass production.

We are located in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon, right next to Pioneer Courthouse Square and Ben and Jerry’s at 526 SW Yamhill Street between 5th and 6th Avenue.

Minors accompanied by an adult are welcome.

History

Established in 2012.

The winery was originally started in Salem, Oregon, under the Bodhichitta Winery label by winemaker and owner, Mark Proden, while attending enology and viticulture school.

After school, he moved to Hawaii and developed the Island Mana label, a line of dry, tropical fruit wines of mango, guava, pineapple and passion fruit. As a result, our space is decorated in a warm island cottage plantation vibe.

We are downtown Portland’s only winery tasting room, wine bar and bottle shop. Come on by, say hi and try some great handcrafted wines!

Meet the Business Owner

Mark P.

Business Owner

The owner and winemaker, runs Island Mana Wines and its sister winery, Bodhichitta in Oregon. Mark spent 11 years in the Air Force as a pilot and engineer before beginning his career in winemaking. He started as a home winemaker and then attended the Northwest Viticulture Center in Salem, Oregon, for courses in enology and viticulture.

While in school, he worked for a number of local wineries, in their tasting room and during crush (harvest), while doing his own winemaking for Bodhichitta and the school as well.

After wine school, he moved to Hawaii, started to experiment with dry, food-​friendly, tropical wines and created the Island Mana label.

The perfect little wine bar located just a stone’s throw from Pioneer Square. Mark (winemaker/​owner) was pleasant and knowledgeable about his tastey wine. His passion for his craft is apparent, but not overbearing or pretentious.
Bonus tip… ask for the four-​legged «Pinot».

Seasonal Gluhwein is available, a German spiced wine which is nice for cold weather. I went for taste of raspberry dessert wine which was just the right amount as I’m still recovering from last nights hot pot party. We were the only customers tonight, but it’s nice as other bars were packed post-​finals and quite rowdy. Popcorn with truffle oil, butter, and cheese was a nice side dish. Hope to come back for Love, Oregon Pinot Noir 2014 wine.

Went here on a whim with a co-​worker for a little downtown and girl chat. It was so much fun! Just moving to Portland and haven’t never really been wine tasting it was a wonderful evening.
Stephanie was super helpful and funny. And made the evening flow. The place is gorgeous and inviting! The wine was yummy and it was nice to try local wines. Also the hummus and pita chips were on point.
I will definitely return to try some more wine in the future!

Very bizarre wine bar. To start out, the place is pretty tiki-​themed. Wine barrels with bamboo style borders. Tiki roof on the inside. Too many Hawaiian labeled wines. This is the kind of place that gives out a logo’d wine glass souvenir with your tasting. No, thank you. The wine glasses themselves are the cheap crappy variety purchased at 15 cents a pop from a bulk wholesaler. Not professional tasting wine glasses.
The experience is far less luxurious and sophisticated than wine tasting should be. You are handed a four page menu, where the days «selections» (AKA only bottles open) are checked off with a black sharpie. A very small selection — maybe 3 Pinots, a cab and a couple of other red blends on the sweeter side. The same goes for the white wine page. The selection of wines is far from impressive and can be found on the lower shelves of most local grocery stores.
Update: Harassing messages from owner. Be careful and read the other negative reviews — this is simply poor business sense. Owner negatively and harshly responds to everyone.
After spending $ 40 here and receiving this kind of nonsense I’m inclined to tell everyone I know to stay away.
Buyer beware.

Mark is a super cool dude, he will take his time explaining the region of your wine tasting. he handpicked all of the wine selections which adds greatly to your experience. I’m so glad I found this place, I can’t wait to come back next time I visit Portland, I highly recommend it.

They have a nice selection of mostly Oregon wines to enjoy by the glass or sample and the space is comfortable and cozy. There is a second floor balcony I would recommend for a romantic date, perhaps just before dinner or to get caught up with an old friend.

Where do I begin… even from a young age wine was something I was taught to appreciate and enjoy. Having been raised in a European style means alcohol of some sort has always been incorporated into family meals. I remember these incredibly tiny glass cups set into silver stems that always held a few sips of wein. My oma would have these set at the table in front our plates during the holidays and as children, and we thought we were so grown up (as an adult I am happy and thankful to report that the glasses have grown considerably in size)!
I’d been walking by The Portland Wine Bar and Winery for some time. A friend and I were in the area with tickets to a movie but wanted a glass of wine prior to. So, I suggested this place.
What’s better than wine? Nothing you say? Well that’s just not true. Dogs (duh). Why am I talking about dogs in the middle of a wine bar review? As it so happens, the greeting party was none other than a sweet furry black lab by the name of Pinot. Mark (of the upright non-​furry variety) set a lovely relaxed tone and was extremely knowledgeable, furthering my education in pinot. (I’m a recent convert.)
Before long, we were sipping on a 2008, taking turns showering Pinot with affection and talking about NASA (yes…the geek in me was nearly going supernova with the convergence of three of my favorite things). Though we were a little late to our movie (we only missed a preview or two) I will, for sure, take my time to stop by here again in the near future.

Redefined our perspective of fruit (or in their terminology, tropical) wines. The pineapple wine had no grape and was smoky, the mango wine was sweet without being overpoweringly so, and the passionfruit wine is a must-​try. The somm and her sister (not working) were highly knowledgeable about not just the wines but potential pairings, and happy to help. They let us know that wine clubs and bottle purchases were possible but did not at all put on the hard sell.
Give it a try if you find yourself in the area!

It was a delightful afternoon in Portland following an abysmal time at another wine bar. We were set on exploring whatever Portland had to offer and Unilocal helped us find this delightful spot.
The actual owner of the Wine Bar was working and he was super helpful with his suggestions of wines, where to travel near Cannon Beach, and Portland in general.
A wine bar is a wine bar. Sounds trite, I know, but the service and conversation and ambiance are what makes it critical for success. These folks know how to do it… they’re one of the best.

This little wine bar is quaint with Hawaiian charm. Several of their wines on the menu have very tasty tropical flavors. I tried the passion fruit wine and mango wine, and they were both dry, with a puckering finish.
I also tried their sangria; I thought I was going to get some tasty fruit chunks out of that, but it poured out of a bottle, so no fruit chunks. The fruity flavor is still there, though!
I think they have an interesting selection of wine, and a decent happy hour. The bar was relatively quiet when I went, even though almost all the seats were taken, so it is probably not a good choice to make this your third stop of the night.
I discovered this place because I purchased the Oregon Wine Passport, which allows you two free tastings for two people here, and I think 10% off a bottle purchase.

The person working the joint, Ocean, is awesome. Very friendly, attentive, and knowledgable not only in wines but in general.
I’ll definitely be coming back and recommend checking it out if you’re in the area.
You may also ask, «why there is a picture of a toilet in this review»? It’s the first joint I’ve been to where you can use the bathroom, keep your derrière warm while doing so and the wash your front (if you’re a chick) and back.

I was traveling around downtown Portland by myself and felt inspired to try some wine after going to the Oregon Historic Museum.
This place is amazing! As a young individual learning about wine, this place was incredible to come across. No one told me to come here, I just Unilocal-​ed it myself. I spent about 90 minutes here (no rush to go anywhere) and I was given not only great information on white/​tropical wines but advice on the local area attractions as well. I’m not picky on my wine but I do love trying new stuff!
Sierra was working and she gave me all the in-​sight I needed for wine and Portland. She didn’t rush me, she made great conversation and gave me advice on what to do after I left here. If it wasn’t for her friendly personality, I think I wouldn’t of stayed here as long. Thank you!!!
To anyone wondering if they should come here or not, why not! Especially during their daily happy hour ;)

I think this Wine Bar is selling something they are not delivering. I looked up Wine Bars in Portland that served semi-​sweet/​sweet white wines, and this place came up as a place that served the wines I requested. Upon arrival I found they are trying to recreate Hawaiian wines in Portland. I’ve been to Hawaii — many times, in fact — and have had their wine. I would rather go to Hawaii and drink the Hawaiian wines then go to a place that calls themselves ‘The Portland Wine Bar and Winery’ to drink bad Hawaiian wine.
Decide what you want to be, and be that, but don’t sell yourself as a Portland Wine Bar that shows up when searching for sweet white wines, when you don’t have any Portland Wines, and your ‘Hawaiian’ wines aren’t really that sweet either.
The ambiance was mediocre, the service was fine, the experience was not anything that they said they were. When in Portland again, I will search another wine bar. When in Hawaii, I will find an actual Hawaiian winery.

I still hold that the website sells the wines I went to taste, but even more is that they say they sell local handcrafted wines from Oregon to Washington, but when you go inside they are marketing Hawaiian Wines. Figure out your niche, then go with it, but don’t sell Oregon and Washington when you are selling Hawaii. And don’t call yourself the «Best Portland Wine Bar» when you are selling Hawaii.
