The Coop Chicken and Waffles

Shut up. Chicken and waffles? I never thought they’d be any good… just sounds weird, right? Wrong! These are obscene, they are so good! My first visit there was shortly after they opened a few years back. Oh my god, what a life changing experience! My GM and I went back 5 days in a row to grub down. Bacon waffle with a massive boneless chicken breast, syrup, sri racha sauce and stone Cajun seasoning… game over. I’ve since tried about 4 or 5 other places for chicken and waffles and nobody even comes close to the quality and value of the coop. So much food I’ve never even finished my plate and it’s only like 7 bucks. Craziness! Every time I’m in the area I try to pop in to grub down line nobody’s business. Keep up the good work and friendly service!

I was very excited to try «The Coop chicken and waffles». I have read the carts reviews, viewed all of the Unilocal photos, and thought it was a shoe in for great chicken and waffles. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was given two small breast pieces, not a full breast, and the wings had a miniscule amount of batter. My photos speak for me. I decided not to walk away without bringing it to the attention of the carts operator. He decided to make excuses. He doesn’t get the 8oz breasts he once served, and said he had just made the chicken wings that morning, hence the absence of batter. Wow. I do have to be fair and say that he offered me my money back as I turned around and walked away. Truly disappointing.

I don’t know how they get their fat chicken breasts so perfect on the outside but even more perfect on the inside!!! Corn meal waffle was perfect also! Can’t wait to go back! Yummy!

We came to Cartlandia on a hot Monday afternoon. Some of the carts were closed but we found The Coop open and are forever grateful. There was no line so we eagerly ordered the Breazy to share (1 piece of chicken with 1 waffle). Maybe it was the heat or just maybe the cook was overwhelmed with the power of divine creation, but somehow an extra waffle ended up coming our way «just because.» THANK YOU WAFFLEMAN! The buttery gooey syrup soaked waffles soft and amazing. In contrast, the perfectly cooked fried chicken was über crispy and made a definitive crunch with each bite. Yum. Will definitely return. Maybe tomorrow. Thank you again waffleman. You made my Monday.

Overall pretty great! I purposely walked a mile and half here in order to build up an appetite, and too, of course, save myself from some caloric overload.
I ordered «The Breezy,» which came with one waffle and a chicken breast. My breast came in two pieces, but that’s fine with me — more fried surface area! The boneless breast was seasoned perfectly. Added with a little syrup and it was spot on for chicken and waffles. The meat was a good quality too. Overall, the chicken was ⁵⁄₅ for me.
As many have mentioned you have a choice between three different kinds of waffles. I went with the bacon waffle. It had a little bit in the middle, and the outer crunch of the waffle was perfect with a little syrup. The waffle for me was just average though. It had a dryness to it, and did taste like it was cooked and warmed up or sitting in a warmer for awhile. Perhaps it was the time of day I went. Waffle ³⁄₅
The service was good. The gentlemen working the counter looked busy, but brought the food out to me as I waited patiently. Overall, a good chicken and waffle experience. I’d definitely go back!

After two visits to the Coop cart, I think it’s a solid three stars. I was underwhelmed the first time — enough so that I really didn’t understand why chicken & waffles was such a big deal. The cornbread waffle was the only standout.
Among the Cartlandia options, however, this one looks most like dessert to my sons (Voodoo donuts and bubble tea aside), so they picked it for lunch again today — and I enjoyed it substantially more. There was no line at 11am on Saturday, and the proprietor recommended the chicken breast (boneless/​skinless, so more meat for your money). We went straight for two cornmeal waffles this time.
This visit, the chicken was moist, crispy & delicious — a lovely combination. And the waffles were tasty again, served with butter pats and our choice of syrup or honey. $ 8 got us almost enough for my two growing sons and I to all be satisfied. But of course it’s Cartlandia, so we had to indulge in other carts as well.

CHICKEN AND WAFFLES.
You know, when I was a kid, I was obsessed with chicken fingers. Couldn’t get enough of them. Every time my parents took us out to eat, I’d always get chicken fingers.
Now that I’m an adult (booooo!), my tastes have changed. Sure, I still love chicken fingers, but my palate is more refined. That’s why I love me some chicken and waffles.
On our first day in Portland, we wanted an authentic food cart experience, so we went to Cartlandia. We wandered around for a good long while until I happened upon this chariot of flavor, The Coop. This one man waff-​a-​palooza fried me up a perfectly seasoned chicken breast and a bacon waffle. It was transcendent. I can’t believe that something with such big flavors came out of this tiny cart. But seriously, it was THE SHIT.
I wish I could hire him to park on my front lawn and make me C’n’W whenever I wanted. But then I might actually be as big as that food cart.

Brendan/​B was a very personable and was really very accommodating – A+ customer service. This was my second Chicken and Waffles experience. The chicken and waffles was cooked to perfection and B recommended the hot sauce on the side which made all the more perfect. The waffle was light, airy and bacon bits which complemented with the fried chicken. The fried chicken was crispy and fresh. The details here are the most important – freshness is key to cooking the perfect fried chicken and waffles and Coop delivered on that. The value was great for the quantity and quality. This met my five star standard – courteous customer service/​genuine, fantastic cooking food, and value worth.

This place is one of the best food carts in that area. It’s only $ 5 for 1 waffle and a big ass chicken wing! Need an additional one of each… just add $ 2!!!
The wings are battered to perfection, you can savor the flavor of the waffles, ya don’t even need butter. The syrup was delicious and not that watered-​down crap that original hot cake house gives you!
You got to go at least once on a empty tummy so you don’t waste any

The chicken is perfect. The waffles are perfect. It’s the best. Time after time, The Coop is spot-​on.
If you haven’t been; go. You won’t be disappointed.

I shared an order with someone else. $ 12 gets you 2 waffles, 1 chicken breast, 2 chicken wings, and a side of maple syrup. It was really good. The chicken was very tender. Only thing is that they could give more maple syrup. Definitely wasn’t enough for my waffles.

I am forever changed after having chicken and waffles
This cart was the only one I saw a consistent stream of customers and my boyfriend fell in LOVE with this place when we came earlier so I had to try it. The buttermilk waffles were good, but I had wished I tried the cornmeal one after tasting my boyfriends. Theyre alot thicker. Okay so aside from the plate as a whole this chicken had to be the JUICEST most tender fried chicken ive ever had! Not greasy or oily AT ALL! I’m in love. I just wish this wasn’t in a different state!
The guy working was alone but it didn’t take long at all and he was very polite! Even after everyones meals were delivered he walked around making sure everyone was doing okay and the food was tasting good. This was the only employee of all the trucks I saw do this! Great customer service!!! Forever a portland stop for me!

First time eating chicken waffle + first time tryin food cart = awesomeness! The food was so bomb and so is the service! :)

But seriously, why wait a bazillion hours for chicken and waffles when such yummy ones await out here almost every day of the week? With options for every price range ($ 5 for one wing and a waffle to $ 12 for crazy-​person-​amount of food) and even several waffle types (I liked the cornbread but they’ve got buttermilk for you purists out there), you absolutely can’t go wrong.
They had actually run out of the wings when I got there, so they sold us the breast combo for the same price! How nice is that?
When I got it, I cut into the chicken and with dismay thought that what was shooting out of the chicken was grease. BUT NO! It was juice! This chicken breast was one of the most succulent, juicy, delicious fried chicken breasts I have had in as long as I can remember. Amazing!
With plenty of honey and butter to drizzle over it, and the waffle forming the perfect vehicle for this delectable chicken, I have zero things to complain about. Score 2 for Cartlandia!

) is one cart you can’t miss on SE 82^nd! I had read fellow Unilocaler — Aaron W.‘s review and thought I should pay a visit as well! I came with a couple of buddies for a quick dinner prior to watching a movie.

*THE BIRD ($ 5; **4 STARS**) — You will not be given «the bird» here, but you will certainly have a nice waffle (option of either: bacon, buttermilk or cornmeal) and a nice, breaded and fried chicken wing! I chose to have my waffle as bacon-​flavored. The real bacon-​bits were savory and were embedded within the waffle. I thought the waffle was okay. I felt I had better waffles elsewhere. I was able to try my friend’s buttermilk and another’s cornmeal waffle. I preferred the cornmeal over the other two.
BUT, let me tell you about that chicken wing! It was soooOOooo succulent and juicy! I was amazed by how scrumptious a piece of bird could be! I really liked that it wasn’t too salty either! That’s a perk! I would order my dish again but with a cornmeal waffle. (

I saw one of my friends write about the latest chicken and waffle joint. Convinced by his review, I quickly spread the word about a last minute gathering before the Wolverine showing. Once we arrived, we were happy to note they gladly accepted cards with no $ minimum. I ordered the «Breezy» which consisted of a fried chicken breast and choice of waffle. For those having a small appetite, the «Bird» is a great choice. I opted for the corn meal flavor while my friends each got the bacon and buttermilk respectively. Once the order has been placed, the food will be delivered to your table.
The food arrived in a timely manner and big smiles from the guy who made it. Each order comes with all the fix ins (butter, utensils, syrup). After giving a portion of the waffles to share, we gorged and feasted in silence. The waffle is so light and fluffy that even the plastic knife cuts it like butter. The chicken pulls apart easily with little grease present. The breading is lightly spiced and not overtly too crunchy. The chicken isn’t dry but plump with each savoring bite. I skipped the butter and used a little syrup for dipping purposes.
The bacon waffle was probably my favorite out of all 3 flavors. Tender cuts of bacon are plentiful. I actually didn’t need any syrup or other condiments when I ate it with the chicken breast. The corn meal is a good choice for those who don’t like bacon but want more flavor than the buttermilk. I used more syrup when I sampled the buttermilk waffle.
After I finished the meal, it filled me up just to the point where I could still walk and not pass out. I enjoyed the meal and I didn’t break my wallet. $ 7 plus bottle water for $ 1 extra is a great deal. Even $ 5 for the «Bird» is a good portion size. For those who love chicken and waffles and doesn’t want to spend an arm and leg, this is the spot to go!

This is another cart that specializes in just one dish, and here, it’s chicken and waffles. The differences come in portion size, the type of waffle (buttermilk, cornbread, or bacon), and the part of the chicken you want (wing or breast).
Yup, I mentioned a bacon waffle option. That’s obviously happening. Real bacon bits in the waffle! I got «The Bird» ($ 5) with a bacon waffle and a wing. The syrup comes in its own container on the side.
It’s a good waffle, and the bacon made the difference for me. An extra punch of savory meat crack to lift my day.
At The Coop, you’ll get the entire wing, not just some dinky little thing. All the chicken is fried to order. Admittedly, I had a bit of difficulty with handling this monstrosity. It’s very juicy and fried perfectly, but it’s not for the timid. Gotta brave the temperature heat and embrace messiness.
If you like the white meat instead, each chicken breast is boneless, with skin on. Each piece of poultry gets a nice seasoned coating and is fried to a crispy golden brown. Frankly, I would go with this next time; it’s probably easier to eat than the chicken wing.
Other choices include «The Random Cat» (2 wings and 2 waffles), «The Breezy» (1 chicken breast and 1 waffle), «The Uncle B» (1 chicken breast and 2 waffles), and «The Swaggy» (1 chicken breast, 2 wings, 2 waffles).
