Specialties

Tabor Tavern is a neighborhood gathering spot featuring elevated pub fare. We have ten rotating taps featuring local beers, a multitude of handcrafted cocktails and an extensive wine list.

Our menu features fun takes on traditional items such as Mac and cheese with smoked Gouda, kale, grilled corn, chorizo sausage and buttered pretzel crumbs; Sautéed mussels in a coconut red curry, cilantro, lime broth; and Tempura battered fish and chips with minted peas. There is also a solid selection of fresh salads and appetizers, as well as vegan, vegetarian and gluten-​free options.

We also sell our famous bacon jam by the jar.

We are open for lunch and dinner daily, as well as Saturday and Sunday brunch.

History

Established in 2012.

Tabor Tavern is a neighborhood pub located in Mount Tabor in east Portland. Inspired by the owners’ travels and love of pub culture, the goal was to create the kind of place fellow tavern fans can congregate to enjoy high-​quality food and drink in a warm, welcoming and unpretentious environment.

Forging a partnership with his wife Kristen, friend Jim, and Lompoc brewer Bryan Keilty, Tabor Tavern is the realization of Zig’s life-​long dream of owning a neighborhood place.

This is our «go to» neighborhood joint, right down the street from our home. Given that proximity, one might think that we’d settle for lower quality just to be able to walk there, but Tabor Tavern needs no such excuse. The the atmosphere is warm, food is always splendid, the beer selection delightful and the service friendly and thorough. It’s always a bit crowded, and there’s a good reason for that!

It’s a cheerful place. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The food tastes good. The service is tediously slow. Have a snack before you go, if you’re already hungry.
I had a wonderful burger with tasty mushrooms on it last time i was here, and with the bacon jam I’d heard about — no doubt a very tasty (albeit heavy) meal. l

My biggest qualm: We felt the bacon jam was *ridiculously* sweet in a way that it was cloying on the Tabor Burger. It was more suited for a sundae. Maybe we needed more dressing on the arugula, seasoning on the burger or blue cheese to add some savoriness to the sandwich? But it just didn’t blow my mind as many reviewers led me to believe it would.
With that being said, I want to stress that the service here was so welcoming, professional and nice — so please, I would highly suggested getting a drink here with a starter of fries. The staff and ambiance is great and the fries were quickly scarfed down by my boyfriend.
But we just weren’t impressed with the $ 13 Tabor Burger with the expectation that the bacon jam would be life changing and it would reign as our ‘favorite burger in Portland’. We also got the French Dip, and I think it sat there waiting for the burger and/​or fries to be completed — it was pretty cold once we got our meal and I couldn’t detect any sauces, Bearnaise or Horsey Mayo, which was a real bummer. The bread and meat was fantastic though? But it really felt more like a $ 14 plain ‘ol dry roast beef roll sandwich — missing the sauces and melty, warm cheese. It wasn’t worth the price tag during this visit, maybe we’ll make more of an effort of trying their happy hour if we decide to come back for a second try?

Finally! We turned left from Burnside and into Tabor Tavern’s parking lot after months of saying ‘we should go there’ and then just driving by.
There was 45 minutes left of happy hour and we tried the burger, beet hummus and pretzel. The ½lb burgers are cooked to order but a little greasy. They are a good deal at $ 6 with fries. Not sure if the $ 3 happy hour pretzel is a different size during regular hours but if it is, the regular $ 7 price would be too much (it’s dough, you know?). The beet hummus was great and I liked that it was served with toasted, sliced baguette instead of pita. Good food! Great service!
I had two cocktails: Lord Bergamot and The Great Pumpkin. The problem with good cocktails is that they don’t last but I do love to try something new everywhere we go. I think the Lord Bergamot was my favorite, nice cream and spice.

Once again Tabor tavern is one of the best places in Mount Tabor just had a wilted spinach salad with a soft boiled egg and it was fantastic I’m getting a fish and chips to go and also I got comped a glass of wine from my friend Don behind the bar. Love this place.

I met some friends here for what turned out to be a surprise party for me, and the staff was friendly, efficient, and accommodating. We were in time for some happy hour starters and opted for cheddar cauliflower bites, beet hummus, and a mini fish and chips. Kudos for some interesting options. The entrée options were less inspired. I ordered what was described as a turkey club. To me, a club has three layers and multiple ingredients. This was a grilled, single-​layer sandwich of turkey, Gouda, and the much-​admired bacon jam. It was much too sweet for my liking — heavy on the jam, light on the bacon. I wasn’t expecting (or wanting) a butter-​grilled sandwich. The accompanying fries were well seasoned and served skin on, which is a textural plus. There is a limited specialty cocktail menu. Nothing there blew my socks off.
It would be nice if they expanded options for dietary restrictions; my gluten-​free, vegetarian friend ended up with French fries and a garden salad for lack of choices.
This is a perfectly suitable choice if you’re in the neighborhood. It’s family-​friendly, and there seemed to be a lot of regulars there.

This place is in my new neighborhood and yet I waited several weeks after moving to stop in — I wish I hadn’t! The service is awesome and the food is great, along with a rotating beer list. Their happy hour specials are great — $ 1 off pints and a variety of appetizer and entrée specials. The customers here are of a wide variety — they have a football crowd and happy hour regulars but also frequented by families. I really enjoyed their Cauliflower Cheddar Fritters, which were only $ 4 during happy hour. For my entrée I enjoyed their Mac N Cheese with pretzel crumbs.

Planned to meet a friend here for happy hour, but missed HH by just a bit. Either way was pleased with the food and service. The place filled up super fast for a Monday night, and while they were showing Monday Night Football on TV, that didn’t seem to be the draw for this restaurant. I noted that many folks were there with their families, including some young children. I would say judging by the size of most of the parties, it’s a very good place for groups, and the restaurant allows you to seat yourself upon arrival.
There is a good selection of beers on tap written on the chalkboard wall. They also have a long list of cocktails available as well. We stuck with our usual drink of choice — Boneyard IPA. We started off with appetizers, the pretzels and Brussels sprouts. There were two medium sized pretzels that came on the dish, and it came with spicy mustard — which ended up being much too spicy for me to eat, though I did try it a few times. The Brussels sprouts were very good, covered with bacon and perfectly cooked.
Following the appetizers we both had the tabor burger and fries. The bacon jam and bleu cheese on the burger really put it over the top. The fries were also very good, didn’t taste greasy or oily like some places can be.
Our server checked in with us often and made sure that we were doing good on our drinks and food. I look forward to coming here again to try more items on the menu. Definitely enjoyed this place, it didn’t seem to be too noisy and we were able to keep up a conversation in our booth and had a great time.

I forgot the cool fans! And the cool pictures of the renovation! Zig is cool, never forget.
Most the time it’s okay. Not rating the customers as they’re almost entirely um, people.
Don is p coo. I think Vivian is a witch. Like an actual witch.
There is no smoking other than out by the dumpster. They make their own house bitters and I’m told they’re pretty good. The beer list is usually good… Zigs Swig is brewed by Lompoc for the bar I assume and is great. The place gets busy after 6. They have two large tvs for sports people. All the staff I’ve had interactions with are nice, including Vivian (actual witch).

I loved reading the writings on this here spot. It seems lots of people I know go/​or have gone here and since my weekend travels haven’t varied much lately, I decided to make a point to go further than the usual
.07 mile from home on out weekly lunches out.
Husband suffering from terrifically wonky jet lag, snooty children, and all were dragged here so I could have the burger and I’m so glad I insisted on it.
Having read the reviews it seems like consistency is the biggest downside but Seems I came on a good day. We all did– the family enjoyed all their choices from waffle, to fish and chips to chorizo and eggs. Whatever.
This is about my burger.
It was glorious. I absolutely loved it and will be back for another one soon enough. The cheese, the bacon jam, the done to perfection patty– all were one with each other creating the perfect song that nobody hates– like; Train in Vain, Big Country, or Werewolves of London. The brioche bun was the perfect texture– donated the fries to my husband who says they were pretty good.

This was excellent — speaking of songs and my penchant for non sequiturs, their playlist even had some mighty fine Big Star going. Lunches like today’s, are really special when the outside influences seem to become part of the ingredients to the meal as well.
Here’s where you need to get your next burger unless you’ve already been here. And you have, I’m just usually late to parties these days. (cocktail choice– the Don with Vodka not gin)

Tabor Tavern, is one of our staple establishments to dine. We know what to expect. It’s one of our go to places. I love, love the kale caesar salad. It’s my favorite salad in Portland. We usually get the booths by the window, cozy and like a cat I like to stare out the window. They also have tables outside, which is nice on a sunny day.
Their taps rotate, they have different beers every time we go. The tabor and classic burgers, I order medium are always delicious. I like to sub the kale salad for an extra dollar, I am not really into their fries. The turkey club, with bacon jam is a solid choice as well. Simple menu. The only thing I would advise not to get is the poutine. I know, being from Canada, I am a little picky.
Friendly servers, chill atmosphere. Friendly neighborhood pub, to grab some beers and great simple pub food!

Tabor Burger: I loved the jam bacon. The bun was perfect. Unfortunately, it had too much arugula, so I had to take some off. I also asked for med rare but it came med well, so that was pretty disappointing because the meat was a bit dry. Overall, the burger was good. It definitely has potential. The blue cheese was perfect.
My wife had the gyro which has some issues. They need to lower the price to like 8 $, or they need to make a Gyro worth 13 bucks, because the one they serve is food cart quality; It’s even wrapped like that. I admit that it was pretty good, but the quality was low and not worth the price.
I like the place though; it’s pretty big and nice. Very lively. I would like to come back and give them another chance of making a burger.

Tabor Tavern is an ok sort of place. During the happy hour, when there are food specials, the place is crowded and there doesn’t appear to be enough seating.
The food is fine. From looking at the photos, I’d say the mac and cheese looks very doable, though the prices are a tad higher than the value received.
The crowd mimics its area — basically a cross between a Laurelhurst and a Mt. Tabor vibe, flavored to some extent by the main Providence Hospital nearby, I’m sure, but definitely a notch or two up than some of the frumpier places on the East Side.
The thing I liked the most about this place was the black and white wall art with the old Mt. Tabor streetcar, resembling a San Francisco cable car, displayed in 4 segments on the rear left wall. The Mt. Tabor area was probably in the hinterlands back in the day, monikers such as hipster and granola were not yet coined, and neither MAX nor Subarus could cart you around. Imagine that … a Portland that was more conventional than weird.
Tabor Tavern is fine. There’s really not much else to say about this place.

I’ve been here twice and both times have been amazing!
The happy hour is great with a decent selection for eats. I recommend the $ 6 burger and add a fried egg and bacon jam. Soo bomb.
Today I went there for brunch and ordered the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. One of the best Benedicts I’ve ever had!
My friend ordered the Rev — a fried chicken sandwich with an egg, cheddar, and pepper gravy. She loved hers as well.
Will def be back for this tavern.
