The hubs and I are (embarrassingly) house junkies. We love to go to open houses. And I unfortunately take it ever further: I keep up with all the listings in a huge chunk of inner NE and SE PDX. So, one day, I proposed a visit to a nifty nearby open house. We weren’t in the market (yet), but knew we soon would be, so we were in the habit of striking up a chat with the agents at various open houses. This time, it was Sue, and she immediately impressed us with her confidence that, yes, we could (1) sell our house easily in the current market and (2) find our «forever» house at a price we could afford.
The very next day, Sue came over to give recommendations. She toured our house, telling us what to deal with and what to skip. All of her suggestions proved to be surprisingly do-​able. She provided a great book of comps and all sorts of other useful information, and she told us that she provided a stager and professional photographer free of charge. She also told us there her goal is to almost always sell a house in the first week – which was remarkable, given that so many houses were sitting on the market for months/​years.
Sue’s stager was awesome. We did almost everything the woman recommended (painting the bathroom, removing a lot of furniture, putting out bright accessories in the kitchen, etc.). We implemented Sue’s recommendations, too, and then were ready to be on the market. We ended up selling a mere eight days after listing, for full price minus a new furnace. Yay!
Then it was time for the exciting and really scary stuff – it was time to buy the «forever» house. We toured dozens of houses, and Sue was able to give very concrete advice about whether a house was worth it or not, how much she thought renovations/​repairs might cost, and what she thought of the neighborhood. She was very patient as we (alas) offered on multiple houses. She told us when to walk away from one offer, and nursed us through the counter-​offer process on two others. When we finally met «the one», she scrambled to make sure we had the first offer, which ensured we got the house, and managed to create a timeline that allowed us to move directly from one house to the other, with no interim apartment in between.
Since then, she’s checked in to see how we are doing multiple times. And, finally, other thing I really like about Sue is that she maintains a database about contractors. So when we have had some weird house issues, she has almost always had recommendations.
