History

Established in 2010.

Michael and Katrina Scotto di Carlo started building Supportland in response to a strong desire to do right by the world. They loved authentic, locally-​owned businesses and were dismayed that the marketplace seemed stacked against these community hubs. So, Michael resigned as a tenured professor and Katrina pivoted from her art career to start up Supportland. Now much bugger then just the two founders, Supportland is an extended family of business members with over 70,000 Portlanders actively participating. Supportland is thriving under a mission to innovate for a world in which communities thrive with wealth, worth, and sense of place.

Supportland fosters local shopping at locally-​owned businesses. For a lot of reasons, including global warming, that is the trend of the future. Anything we can do to build back the range of local shops and services that we once had — before we reach the limits — will help us over the hump.

Plus — it’s really nice to get the points — and nicer to spend them.

YES. This company rocks. We’ve enjoyed using our Supportland card at local artisan marts, coffee shops, and toy shops. With your reward points you can claim prizes like a cup of coffee, bowl of chili, life coaching session, or day at the spa!

What a rad idea. I first heard about Supportland in the Portland Mercury (article:
) and was super excited for them to launch.
Supportland provides incentives for people to buy from locally owned Portland businesses, which is a great idea. There’s a Supportland card that allows a cardholder to accumulate points when shopping at local businesses and then the points can be redeemed for rewards at said businesses. I know Food Fight! is a business that’s part of the network, and there’s at least 62 other businesses who are part of the Supportland program. Buy local! Get rewards! Do it!

Getting a reward — beyond the deep satisfaction of supporting my local economy (and NOT filling BigCorp’s coffers with my hard-​earned retirement income) — is icing when the places I already support join forces in a network. Such a thing can only strengthen our Portland community.
So far I’ve only gotten my ‘punches’ from Food Fight (after all the point isn’t to go out of my way and consume more). But I’ll refer to the list of 63 businesses the next time I consider acupuncture or yarn or fabric. (I’ve contacted New Seasons to encourage their joining. What a great thing that would be!)
It does help me feel better about the fact that for two years in a row I’ve been guilty of «chronically forgetting to use coupons from the Chinook Book.”(
). So much easier to swipe my Supportland card.
