SMUT Vintage

I loved this little vintage shop!!! It was crammed full of awesomeness. They have a great vinyl selection for a vintage shop. Lots of funky pins and patches to choose from. Of course there’s a lot of vintage smut (old porno mags). They only have one rack of clothing, but it was all good stuff. Next time I’m in PDX, I’ll definitely be going there again.

I’d like to say something about the recent nasty review by Joe W. I’ve been coming into this store almost daily for a few years now, because they give free dog treats, and my dog and I stop in on our regular evening walk. The negative things he said don’t ring true at all in my experience, and reflect poorly on him.
I rarely buy anything because I’m paring down, but they are always super nice, and we often chat. There are two regular employees and an owner, and I’ve noticed over the years that all of them are good at working retail, welcoming people as they come in, offering to help or answer questions, and being generally attentive and approachable. I’ve seen them handle a few difficult customers, like one homeless guy who was acting a bit crazy, and they have always done it with kindness and grace.
I came in shortly after Joe W. and his family had left and heard the other side of the story, because the person working there was still upset that someone could be so rude and such a jerk. He didn’t just ask her to throw away his coffee cup, he had two handfuls of garbage, including a leaky milk carton. She has almost no room behind the counter, and has to carry out any garbage herself. She politely told him where the nearest garbage bin was down the street. He had a hissy fit and deliberately left his garbage on the ground outside, right at the entrance to the store, at which point she walked out and told him he was a jerk, and was not welcome in the store again. And so he went on Unilocal and tried to get her in trouble. What a lovely human being… I’m glad there are enough other reviews that people can get a real view of the store, and the people who work there. They are a warm, friendly part of the neighborhood I live in, and I want them to do well, because they have cool stuff, a great staff, and deserve our business. Small, cool unique stores like this are what make Portland great.

Was in town for the holidays and wanted to check out some cool shops. Stopped into Smut Village looking for some unique stuff. Lady sitting at front desk was apparently having a really bad day. Did not welcome or greet us as we entered, even though we were the only ones in the store and had to walk directly past her. My wife said «hello» and she just looked down at her phone. So we ended up buying a couple of small items, and as we were leaving, I asked her if I could throw away my empty coffee cup. She gave me a look like I was crazy! She said absolutely not! I figured she was just kidding with me but she was dead serious. I assured her it was empty, but she just started yelling at me, that it was my trash, not her problem. At this point I was getting pretty offended and insulted. So I told her, as a paying customer, I was just gonna leave the cup on the counter, and she could take care of it. At this point, she called me an asshole. I said have a nice day, and she called me an asshole again, in front of my wife and 4 year old. Rude and classless woman. She had red hair and I think she may have been the owner. Obviously we will never return.

They certainly got the name right! This place has a positively giant collection of vintage skin mags, so if that’s your thing, this is your place. They seem to focus on vintage media in general, with a ton of records, VHS tapes, and copies of old local rags. Of course, they also have the general trappings of a vintage store: a small and curious selection of clothing, posters, books, art and more.
One thing really stood out for me. The vintage suitcases filled with hundreds of old, abandoned snapshots and family photos. Called «Instant Relatives», they’re sold at 50 cents a pop, and I could browse them for hours. I just found the collection so intriguing. There’s no rhyme or reason to what’s included, it’s just other people’s forgotten memories of forgotten relatives. I found it both beautiful and sad.
Anyhow, that’s enough of me getting all poetic about a vintage store. But I’ll say it: SMUT is worth a visit.

it’s medium priced but they sell pretty high quality items and they play awesome vinyl one album at a time, the way it was meant to be listened to!

So this place is super cool! I don’t really know how to describe it except for it’s really eclectic vintage shop. They have old records and magazines and iron on ones and little trinkets and furniture and mirrors and artwork and I could go on. There’s so many little things in there and it’s just a little treasure chest. Some of the items are really priced appropriately I think, and some of them are a little overpriced. But they are all vintage and antique so I am not an expert on that, and who knows how they really should be priced. What’s awesome is that the girl that was working there was super sweet and nice and really wanted to help you find whatever you need it, and was really apologetic when the person in mind in front of me was taking forever. I really appreciate that. This is a great place to go if you’re looking for gifts or random little items that you need for certain occasions.

Scored a great vintage record here for our bar. The dude working was super friendly and the owner is simply wonderful. I recommend this place for anyone seeking vintage treasure!

I’ve stopped by every few weeks and have always spent a few bucks here. They’ve had some really cool trailblazer’s memorabilia that I’ve picked up as well as some as off the beaten path fun stuff like Yo Mtv Raps trading cards. Oh yeah!

A gem in the neighborhood. I love walking in frequently because you never know what you’re gonna find. Over the years it’s been a great place for me to find gifts and really cool stuff to hang on my walls and some really cool furniture. The staff is nice and not in the least bit pretentious… And they give my dog cookies. We love this place. It was pretty cool to see it on Portlandia.

If there was a way to give less than one star, then I’d do it. This lady is rude as hell, very over priced for what she has, not much to look at. I guess if you like mediocre stuff at outrageous pricing then this place is for you! But if you want quality stuff at a good price then don’t set foot in this crappy shop!

Can’t help but smile when going through the shop. So many funny things from the past.
Almost bought: There are these old tennis rackets that I really wanted to get but it won’t fit with anything in the house. They were $ 15 each. And a Rooster for $ 20. Still thinking about them…
Other really fun knick knacks, prices are good. Definitely worth a stop on the thrift shop tour.

As an avid postcard writer and enthusiast this place is absolutely on the TOP of my list! While there are bunch of other shops that sell vintage postcards, i find that this place consistently always has the widest selection of UNUSED postcards… at an acceptable price to boot! Since i commit the sacrilege of sending these pristine vintage cards through the mail, i really appreciate the quality and extremely wide variety of the selection.
They also have a lot of other small ephemera and randomness that may seem useless to some but is pure magic to me! Patches from the 50s 60s and 70s from random people’s bowling leagues, Garbage Pail Kids stickers, matchbooks, vintage found photographs, old girly mags… the thing to remember is that nothing in the whole store is particularly valuable, but to a craphound like myself, it is sheer vintage heaven.

If you’re looking for an escape into a different time, this is a wonderful place to start. Searching through collections of buttons, dog tags, matches, antique medical books, and antique bottle openers brought a sense that this is a true Portland vintage shop. Expect to find something new, unique, and interesting. One interesting find was the box full of old family photos titled, «Instant Relatives.»

This was definitely an interesting shop. Like a previous reviewer stated, I didn’t really find anything that I really wanted. I did enjoy browsing their selection of fur coats (although it was close to 90 degrees out, so I didn’t feel like trying any on). The dressing room looked creative and cute with the mirrors lined along the walls. The taxidermic heads on the wall gave this place a cozy, warm feeling. And like most reviewers said, yes, this is your place to get vintage playboy mags if that is what you are in to! They have a case filled with old black and white photos of strangers that you can purchase, as well as a case of random matchbooks. Definitely a fun place to browse.

This place has a cool selection off odd treasures. A fun way to spend a couple hours.

From written-​on old postcards to old milkshake makers, to comical buttons and «instant relatives», SMUT has everything weird, wacky, and wonderful. I got two porcelain cups here that I think are my favorite pieces of dishware (and fit under my espresso maker) and picked up some vintage photo postcards of Disneyland when it was first built. Scored an old Rush record for my dad’s birthday, and the BF got some funky old medical textbooks.
I could spend weeks in here.

Random, cool crap. Very PDX — I don’t even know what I mean by that. But it was a cute store. We stopped in to kill time while waiting to eat. Fun stuff to look at.

I love Smut! If i had more room in my luggage, I’d haul back a few vinyls and other memorabilia back to L.A. I loved everything in there, all the knick knacks and vintage porn. I could’ve been in there for hours, but it was near closing time. However, I did find Dinosaur Jr.‘s Without a Sound on cassette and was thrilled it was only $ 1. The cashier was really nice and said my tattoo was really cute, which put a smile on my face. Man, I love PDX!

You have a policy from your manager where you are not allowed to «go down» on pricing? No bargaining? Oh please. You STILL are a thrift store. OK then. You can keep your costume jewelry for $ 16.00. I’ll go to other places that allow for not blowing a sale by doing a little give and take with the clientele. I don’t need to feel cheap.
