Sam Sam Sam!!! Full disclosure: I am in the hair cutting industry, and while I’m not very picky, I DO know when someone is doing a great job. And Sam did a GREAT job! She did. A thorough consultation and listened to what I wanted and what hasn’t worked for me in the past. I have thick/​curly/​course hair. She not only gave me a great cut that ill be able to manage, but she also took the time to blow it out and give me a fun style. As someone who doesn’t spend a lot of time on my own hair, it was sure nice to sit in someone’s chair and have her pay so much attention to detail. You need to go see her! You won’t be disappointed!

Found this place via Unilocal.Called and got same day hair appointment with Sam. Im going to an engagement party tonight where it’s theme is fancy /​vintage hats. Brought my hat in and showed some pics off of Pinterest of vintage style hair designs and she totally pulled it off. I love it! Highly recommend Sam.

I just moved to Portland and realized, at some point, I would need to find someone to cut my hair. Daunting is the word that comes to mind. I checked Unilocal and this place popped up.
I read the reviews and decided to go for it! I have had my hair cut in a similar way to what Susan did today, but she gave it some additional details which no one has ever done in all of my years (and I won’t mention how many that would be). She made my hair sassy (just like me). My hair was a bit past shoulder length, no bangs, pulled back in a pony tail. I told her I wanted it cut so I could still put it in a pony tail and I wasn’t opposed to bangs, but wanted something to soften my face. She did that plus more. This is, by far, the best haircut I have ever had in many years. Thank you!

Brianna. Go see Brianna. She is wonderfully talented, super patient, and the right amount of chatty. In short, this lady is a pro. She helped me take great strides from frump girl hair to grown up hair. The space is lovely without being overwhelming or over stylized. The products are great, esp for people with curls. Thank you! I went here to try a new salon and was not disappointed in the layout or cleanliness. My shampoo and scalp massage was great but the hair cut missed the mark. I tried to make another appointment and no one called me back. There seems to be a lot of scheduling problems here and I won’t be back as they don’t seem to care about having return customers.

My sister went from waist length Amish hair to shoulder length hip, stylish, highlighted, amazingness… and she looks 10 years younger… seriously. I can’t stop looking at it. Give Susan a call on her cell as the business voice mail doesn’t get checked as often. I called her the evening before and she got her in the next morning. Bri is a miracle worker. She gave me the best looking highlights/​bang trim I’ve ever had. The bang trim part might seem trivial, but if you’re like me there is a fine line between adorable and awful, so a skilled bang trim is noteworthy. Besides being a great stylist, Bri is incredibly patient, fun to talk to, and is extremely careful not to pull your hair. I’d recommend her services to anyone.

I absolutely love getting my hair done here with Bri. She gives the best neck and head massages, conditions with this tingle conditioner and my hair is always just how I ask for it! Definitely recommended!

I have been getting my hair but by Christian for over a year now and I have never been happier. I’m picky and have asked quite a lot from him, including cutting 10 inches off into a pixie cut! I also frequently need to reschedule my appointments and he always works with me. He knows what he’s doing and is highly recommended from me.

I went to Christian after reading a couple of great reviews on Unilocal.I had recently acquired a boring and un-​finished bob from another stylist. When I sat in the chair, Christian didn’t ask me what I was looking for at all; we just discussed that my cut needed some shape. To me this means not changing it too much. I wanted it a similar length with an edgier shape and a little texture. I found out he was thinking something entirely different and within minutes I had lost many (~6) inches from various layers. Ultimately I was left with less than half of the hair I walked in with, with all of the layering, thinning, and texturing he did. My hair does not need that much as it is quite fine and has some natural wave. It ended up looking fried and scraggly. And another cut to fix it was not really an option as some of my layers were shorter than my bangs! To top it off, the layers are much shorter on one side than the other.
I thought maybe he was trying too hard. It took a very long time and like I said much of his technical finish work was unnecessary. I was hoping he could read my hair texture and give me something that would suit me and be flattering, but I didn’t get that at all. Six months later I’m still a ways away from that bob I wanted!

I’m a lazy piece of sh*t when it comes to my hair. I trim my bangs like a maniac, So thank goodness for professionals like Brianna. I gave her a vague ‘cut 10 inches, idk something that works with my face’ and she delivered. I’d go back.

I came to Rock Paper Scissors on a whim (I was only in Portland for a few days) with a rather bizarre cut in mind – an asymmetrical bob, with one side at ear level and the other down to my chin (think pixie-​bob hybrid). I saw it on another girl but had no pictures, so all I could do was describe it. Thankfully, Brianna totally nailed it! She was extremely attentive and always made sure to describe exactly what she was doing, asking me multiple times if she was heading in the right direction and if I wanted anything tweaked. I’ve never had my hair cut this short, but I felt completely at ease knowing that Brianna was taking her time and looking out for me. In the end, I got exactly what I was looking for, and I couldn’t be happier with my experience at this lovely salon. Highly recommended!

What I love most about Susan is that she listens to what I want and creates a style that I love, not something trendy that she thinks is right for me (like other stylists that I’ve worked with in the past). She is easily accessible and always takes care of me in a timely manner. I appreciate her on so many levels, especially after having a series of terrible cuts that led me to her.
Gigi also rocked a super-​duper haircut on my boyfriend. His rock-​n-​roll do has earned him «hot guy» points from strangers and he is thrilled. He brags that Gigi is his new «girl».
I’ve also got to rave about the other stylists as well, as I’ve been privy to their work and it’s all incredibly good. I’m pleased to say that I would be comfortable going to any of them for my cut/​style needs.
The space is hip, modern and in an overall great location on Hawthorne… just far enough up the street to avoid parking problems. I can’t say enough good things about this awesome salon. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

GiGi is a true artist with hair! I can not begin to explain how happy I am every time I have seen her. My hair looks like a famous persons hair! She knows Magic!!! She is very comfortable and fun to talk to. Her attention to what she is doing is never swayed though. Truly a gifted hair dresser! She could be working with the stars, but I am so glad she is here in Portland!

After my amazing «hair guy» moved to Bend, I was struggling to find a good replacement, when a few of my colleagues recommended Christian at Rock Paper Scissors. They all had great cuts and most of them were short. So I decided to take a risk and have Christian cut a good foot off, and I couldn’t be happier! I have really thick hair that can be tricky to cut in a short style, but he is a total pro. He takes his time to get to know your hair and the way it falls on your head. He’s like a scientist. Totally amazing and worth every penny. Plus he’s great to chat with; an hour flies by and you get to leave with a rockin’ haircut.

I haven;t been able to find a great hair stylist for several years since my last one moved to Denver. I search around LA and after moving to Portland tried out one other salon and didn’t love the cut I got.
Tonight I went to Gigi at Rock Paper Scissors and got an amazing cut & style. I have thin hair, but a lot of it. Wanted to keep the length but thought my current do felt «heavy.» Other stylists have been scarred to wack away the hair and texture-​ize it a ton, but Gigi wasn’t and got my hair looking better than it has in a long time.
I told her what I wanted (keep the length, make it less «heavy,» add some bangs). She review with me her plans and made sure i was good with what she thought would be the best cut. About ½ the cut was done with wet hair and then she did ½ the cut dry — which works really well with my hair. She went around again and again perfecting the cut. Didn’t take too long but definitely but time and effort into it.
Glad to have found my new hair stylist in Portland! Now to find all my other «maintenance» people…

Susan is an amazing hair stylist that can make the best styles out of the most boring or difficult hair (like mine)!
Located in a very hip-​yet-​comfortable studio on upper Hawthorne, there is absolutely no reason not to give Susan, or this salon, a try!

I have been going to Christian for years now, and every single time I leave with a fantastic cut. He is incredibly knowledgeable with the current styles and fashions to get your ‘do dialed in, so much so that whenever I visit him I just tell him to work his magic and it always exceeds my expectations. He is the only stylist that I have found that will leave you with a cut/​color/​style that never fails to draw compliments. I have referred him to everyone I know and he has failed to disappoint.
Christian works wonders.

I was referred to Susan @ Rock Paper Scissors by a friend who always has a great short haircut — it even grows out well!
So when it was time for me to chop my hair (from below my mid-​back to just under my chin), I decided to go to Susan.
She was awesome — no-​nonsense, to the point, not overly chatty (though we did talk throughout the haircut, just not a constant babble like my dental hygienist). She knew exactly what I wanted within two minutes of talking with me.
I went from nondescript J-​horror looking stick-​straight, waist-​length hair to a funky layered bob with severe bangs. I mention these specifics because my kind of hair shows any flaws in scissor work — there’s absolutely no body to hide any slips.
I love my hair, and even almost two months later, the cut still looks crisp and intentional.
The salon is on the ground floor of one of those new mixed use developments along Hawthorne. It looks a little cold and ultra-​modern, but everyone at the salon was personable. The other stylists there seemed to also be turning out solid cuts, and every single client (including me) was grinning like a pleased loon.
