New Location! PUBLIC Bikes is not your average bike shop in Portland. At this unique pop-​up test ride showroom behind Marine Layer, you can try out every model of PUBLIC bike and place your order with special in-​store pricing. We design European-​inspired city bikes for all kinds of people. You can dress in business or casual attire, and wear pumps, tennis shoes, or flip flops — just about anything — while riding our bikes. These bikes will make you feel like a kid again, and this is every bit as important as anything else.

History

Established in 2010.

PUBLIC’s mission is to encourage all of us to be more conscious of, and intelligent about the way we get around in our daily lives. PUBLIC was founded in 2010 in a design studio turned bike shop in San Francisco by Rob Forbes of Design Within Reach and a small team of fellow bike lovers. In June 2015 we opened our first PUBLIC pop-​up shop outside the Bay Area, on NW 23^rd in Portland.

Business Owner

Rob Forbes’ career includes work in both the Arts and Business fields. Forbes is best known as the founder of Design Within Reach and for the vision of a business that has grown into the leading retail destination for modern design in the US. In 2007 Rob formally left DWR to launch Studio Forbes, based in San Francisco, to further his interests in design, culture, and commerce. These interests and his personal passion for bicycles led him to his new venture PUBLIC. PUBLIC is a design based business with a mission to help us reduce our dependency on cars and think more intelligently and artfully about the way we get around and connect with our cities and communities.
