History
Established in 1987.
A distinguished member of the Historic Hotels of America, the Portland Regency Hotel & Spa was built in 1895 for Maine’s National Guard and was one of the finest armories in New England.
The Armory has been transformed over the years to house stranded soldiers, sailors, and marines. It was also used as a recreation center for the United States Navy, a home to the National Guard’s citizen soldiers, a civic auditorium, and as the city’s public bath house. Before it could be transformed into a parking lot in 1962, the Armory was purchased for conversion into a hotel in 1984. To complement Portland’s popular and restored waterfront Old Port, the hotel opened with 95 rooms in 1987.
Many of the original architectural elements create unique features in the spacious, traditionally appointed rooms. For guests with more modern taste, the Portland Regency Hotel & Spa underwent a unique five-month renovation on the third and fourth floors to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2012.
