Portland Homestead Supply

I’ve become increasingly aware of the critical health and well-​being of my gut and its ecologies of bacteria and so started pursuing knowledge in fermentation of foods which ultimately led me to Portland Homestead Supply (PHS).
PHS is a veritable Candy-​Land for the fermentation DIYer: ceramic crocks; all sizes of jars with airlock tubes; kefir grains; sourdough starters; etc. I called ahead of my visit to confirm they had milk kefir grains in stock. PHS obtains them from a third-​party called Cultures for Health. I’m familiar with this vendor and was able to obtain the kefir grains for the same price advertised on the vendor’s website.
Even beyond my narrow fermentation needs though, PHS contains wonderful quality baking and cooking wares that would make the heart happy of any generalist.
The space is small and rather cramped but it’s organized well and densely stocked. I live in the Northwest and made the trek out to Sellwood to visit.

I adore this place. I took a class there with Jessie S and she was fantastic. She was very patient, friendly, and incredibly helpful. I already signed up for another class in a week. I could see myself getting easily addicted to their classes.
They offer so much, for the DIY enthusiast, this place is heaven on earth. You can get supplies for homemade soap, candles, pasta, etc, etc. They offer a huge range of classes– everything from making fermented foods to pie crust to lotion to soap to both dairy and vegan cheese.
And the store is bright, cheerful, and well organized. The people working there are kind and very helpful.
I love this place. I’ll be shopping there often.

This place is *beautiful*, has really great prices and lots of lovely alternatives to the usual fare — like some very pretty canning jars, for instance. The staff were super helpful and friendly too!

This is such a fun place! What a gem for Portland. There are supplies for all things homestead: cheese making, canning, soap making, candle making, fermenting foods and drinks… And classes too! And my favorite: chicken keeping!

I come here for all my backyard chicken needs. They have a couple of different kinds of foods to choose from at each stage, stage specific sized grit, chicken first aid supplies as well as everything you need for your coops cleanliness (bedding, mite control, deodorizer, etc). I also love their selection of bulk treats– my chickens love their black sunflower seeds and I love the price ($ 1/​lb) and protein content.
Every single staff member is friendly, knowledgable and fun to chat with. This is my first flock of chickens and every question I have had has been met with a very helpful answer. I also have not felt pressured to buy a bunch of unnecessary supplies. There have even been a few times that I have asked about a product and after having the purpose explained to me, was told that I didn’t actually need it unless I just really wanted it and another (free) solution was suggested.
There are cheaper places in Portland to find your chicken supplies, but you will have a hard time matching the quality of the products and staff. I have two small children who LOVE coming with me to the store to see the goats and I have never been made to feel uncomfortable for bringing them along– not the case with other supply stores around SE Portland.

I used to live in the Sellwood area so this was a store that I would frequent often. My partner and I even bought our chicks here. The folks that work in the store are an amazing source of knowledge for anyone into the do-​it-​yourself culture. As a soapmaker I have gotten a lot of advice and supplies from here. I’ve also made lip balm and deodorant from the store.
They also have an amazing seed exchange program where people bring in their extra seeds in the spring. The classes are reasonably priced and the topics are always compelling. Kombucha flowing from the tap is always delicious and they have a number of books that you can peruse on various subjects. Make sure to check out the back lot where they have resident goats and chickens who are adorable. It’s a great place to bring your kids.

Couldn’t be any happier with their patience and service. The sales lady explained everything we needed to know and walked us through our first gardening experience. She asked us questions like where our gardening bed was located. What our soil quality was like. She answered our questions about bone meal, lime, feather meal (which they sell by the pound) and I felt comfortable enough to ask stupid questions. Super friendly super informative and we ended up looking like gardening pros to our neighbors. We hope our plants grow!

Great selection of supplies for your back to basic needs. I was quite impressed with prices and selection. Whether you’re looking for canning supplies, a goat milking tin, cheese making supplies, laundry soap ingredients, on and on… it’s all here and affordable. Staff here were very friendly and helpful also.

I love Portland Homestead Supply. I go there and dream of all the things I would love to learn when it comes to cooking, gardening, butchery, making your own soaps and toothpaste and laundry soap, composting, farming, whatever it is– start here. They have a few awesome books, and some pamphlets that I found helpful for beginners! Stop in and get the books, learn what you need and come back and get it! Each section is carefully sectioned for all the amazing tasks you are going to learn! They also sell plants! There are lots of flyers for classes and community programs that help you learn too! And even some mason jars filled with all the supplies for different tasks like making soap or toothpaste etc. Some things in the store are out of my price range but I don’t think they are overpriced, there are just some nice things in the store and when you are starting out maybe you don’t need everything yet but when these hobbies are something you invest in, here’s the place to get the right stuff. There’s canning jars and kitchen tools and seeds too! Ok, lets start with the stuff that’s well priced. This place has coconut oil for like 5 dollars. And every other oil you could ever need. You know those recipes you found on a do it yourself website that you didn’t know where the hell you were gonna get some of these ingredients from? They are here! They have soaps that are already made too! And lots of essential oils to make your own stuff. There’s adorable little bags that are cheap, and LOTS of very reasonably priced things. I would say overall I found this store to be an awesome value. The people who work in the store are super kind and helpful. I think they also have fresh eggs too! There is just, everything you need!!! I bought a bunch of different herbs and just looked them up later and found uses for them, be it for baths or teas or anything I found lots of uses for everything I bought!

This place was great!
I am not a very crafty person but was in need of some candle making supplies for a probably over-​adventurous party favor. The woman at the counter helped me figure out what size and how much wick, how to calculate fragrance based on pounds of wax, and how to figure out dye colors and amounts. Even gave pointers like.“citrus fragrance should be added at a lower temperature .“
The shop is adorable.

Confession: I like hobbies, a lot. I have made cheese, plaited watercolors, tie dyed many a white items, quilted a dozen crib quilts and most recently took up candle making. Where is a gal to go to get equipped with candle making supplies? Portland Homestead Company.
I was walked through the items I needed to get set up. Soy wax (5 lb bag) vessels, essential oils, wicks and a wax melter. The items I purchased made about 20 mid sized candles and cost $ 35ish.
The gal who helped me was super patient and friendly. They have all kids of other goodies for a variety of homesteading activities: cheese making, diy laundry detergent, canning, raising farm animals etc.
I enjoyed my first visit so much I came back a couple days later, trip #2 was just as delightful. If you want to make a unique gift or take up a new hobby, this is your place. You’re welcome.

This is my new favorite store for shopping, gifting supplies, and classes! I love the variety of urban homestead options. They make DIY easy and fun with a friendly attitude!!! I just wish it were closer to me!

Get your sprouting seeds, tempeh culture, kombucha kit and other cultures here! There’s also plenty of kitchenware to help you can, ferment, etc.
Also the people that work here are knowledgable and very friendly.

This place is a must for anyone who wants to learn how to do it yourself in the kitchen. Lots of hard to find, unique kitchen tools and a large selection of canning supplies and jars. (Weck!) Home canning and preserving, animals, gardening, cooking tools. Unique and hard to find items. They offer affordable classes on how to make your own candles, soap, sausage, pressure canning, bath bombs, chicken keeping, gardening and a long list of other really cool stuff. They sell bulk ingredients to make the stuff they teach, affordable kits to take home make it yourself like a homemade toothpaste kit for $ 8.95. Teaching old fashioned ways of doing things for less as well as new and clever tricks too. I have taken a soap making class and bath bomb class here, I was able to take home an entire batch of what I made and have been making them at home ever since. The classes are so well organized, prepared, and equipped they run smooth & effortlessly. And did I mention fun? This is a place that always draws me in, lots of books and local artisans. They are so well equipped with the tools and experience to help you with almost whatever project you have going on. There is a free seed exchange as well. I always walk away with a new idea of how to do things more simply or healthful at my house. They sell plants and have some sweet chickens and goats as well as natural feed.

This is one of my favorite places in Portland. I’m a frequent customer and always feel at home the second I walk in. Not only do they carry our chicken feed, but they have an amazing selection of canning items, soap and candle making products, natural household cleaners, and all of your homesteading needs. The staff are knowledgable and friendly and always give great advice. They also have an amazing variety of classes where you can learn how to make soap, cheese, chicken keeping, butchering, and canning. Can I live in this store? No really, I want to LIVE here! It’s actually realistic too, since right there in the store I could:
1) Make my own laundry soap (and have clean clothes)
2) Make my own soap (and have a clean body)
3) Make my own candles (and have light)
4) Jar my own food and jams with every single Mason jar size and type I would ever need (and be full and happy)
5) Bake my own homemade cookies (which is sometimes done and left for customers, um, I mean residents like me on their huge work table in the middle of the store)
6) Eat fresh eggs for breakfast, (laid by their very own chicken in the back)
7) Take care of my goat AND feed it too
8) Make my own cheese (to eat with my homemade jam and pickles of course)
9) Make my own cider, beer or wine (and be merry)
10) Garden till my heart’s content…
It would be a good life if I lived at Portland Homestead Supply! But alas, I can not live in their store, and sadly, I don’t even live in Portland, but if I did, you can bet that this would be the place I’d come to REGULARLY to make my «real» home an equally wonderful place to live in. Plus anyone who can package fertilizer and make it look good, has EXTRA stars from me! so 6 stars for Portland Homestead Supply!

I stopped in here with a friend so he could get some supplies. This little shop is great! They have a nice selection of items you just don’t see in stores these days, things like canning materials, books for just about anything around the house, natural powders/​liquids to make your own cleaners, and much much more! They have geese, chickens and goats and teach classes relating to various things.
Nice to find such things IN the city!

It’s not surprising that homesteading is back in style.
The new urban homestead is on the rise, whether you’re hip to the fact that this way of life makes sense, or you’ve found that you’re inner-​food preservation small farmer shines with a coop and a pantry full of your home grown veggies & fruits.
Sellwood just got a store that is as eclectic as this new movement and I feel like Portland Homestead Supply nails it.
Clean and well lit, the store is divided into different sections. The entry (on SE 13^th) is canning, cheese making supplies, and a handful of grain mills.
The upper level has the workshop/​classroom area where classes are held with beer, wine, cider making and various kitchen accoutrements.
Take a stroll outside to the driveway and back to the garage. You’ll find goats, chickens, bulk grains, feed and gardening stuff.
Everything is clearly labeled.
Everything is visually pleasing.
The staff member we spoke to on our visit was extremely helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. When we were there we watched her handle a question from customers that could have thrown most employees for a curve with grace and confidence.
I am thrilled that there is a store closer to our home that will be a one-​stop-​shop for our own urban homestead.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It! Sellwood has a new business in town and it looks to be a great addition. I write this review, sitting immediately across the street in front of The Ugly Mug with the requisite Stumptown in my cup, a view through the new store’s wide open doors, reveals BULK GRAINS.
Housed where Europa formerly lived, you will step across the threshold into a veritable wonderland of living closer to the land. The Ultimate DIY supplier. From Canning and Baking, to Candle and Soap Making, you will find everything you’ll ever need to do these things yourself or learn how.
Right now they are featuring a Cheesmaking Class. They were baking big Chocolate Chip cookies for customers to enjoy. I wondered around and noticed everything from animal feed, coconut oil, Epsom salts and borax to pasta making supplies, all sold at bulk pricing. Oh, and one of the staff was making pasta right there near the register!
I saw rows of pretty jars for canning, and the walls were lined with metal sifters and other kitchen must haves for those who want to do it themselves. Rambling towards the back of the store I came across washboards, handmade brooms, and old time clothes washing setups.
I inquired about their website, and was told it should be live any day. A list of upcoming classes will be featured as well as a calendar of events.
I’m sure that in no time I will be writing a 5 star review, but for now, I’ll start out by saying that the Portland Homestead Supply Co is A-​OK! (3 stars)
