History
Established in 2008.
Portland Custom Shop was formed by 3 experienced young techs focusing in different areas of repair and instrument voicing to provide a one-stop shop for working musicians, students, and recording professionals. By working together with shared customers, we focus on voicing the entire «musical ecosystem» of your rig, from boutique guitar pickups and custom circuits to low capacitance cables, from custom pedal board routing to personalized foot controls, from NOS tubes to the best-matched speaker for your amplifier. We are here because we love music and musicians, and our goal is to help you achieve YOUR SOUND. We are constantly expanding and doing custom work, which leads to a frenetic, exciting (and somewhat chaotic) work atmosphere– but we are always interested in talking with customers to share what we’re up to and help you achieve your musical goals.
Meet the Business Owner
Brian W.
Business Owner
Having attended the Galloup School of Lutherie in 2002 and worked since then as a guitar tech in a busy guitar shop, as well as touring tech for several popular indie bands, I opened Portland Custom shop along with Bryan Sours and Tim Hochstedler in 2008 with the goal of creating the kind of instrument service shop I’d want to patronize myself. I love working on guitars with a history, whether they are a pulverized, rusted out, punk rock pawn shop find, a meticulously cared for vintage piece, or a custom guitar from a small builder.
While I (Sick String Guitar Repair,) Tim (Synapse Audio), and Bryan Sours (Soursound) all have separate businesses at Portland Custom Shop, we share an ethic of fairness toward our customers, innovation in our work, and a striving for quality. We don’t charge a minimum bench fee and always try to work with players on deadlines and rush work, at no extra charge if at all possible.
