Pitch Dark Chocolate

I’m so happy I happened upon this little chocolate factory/​shop. It seems like they are just starting out but really know what they are doing. Their chocolate is amazing. They are super friendly. …and they are super into what they are doing. The first time I went in I met a guy that I think must be the owner — he was super excited to stop what he was doing and talk to me about chocolate. The next time I went in, I met his brother, also super nice.
I think I got lucky and found the best chocolate in Portland by accident. :)

This is an exceptional place to get very good, very special chocolate. Keep it for yourself, or gift it. I went in looking for the perfect chocolate to pair with a certain nice Syrah and was really excited about the chocolate, which has incredible depth and nuance.
The packaging should not go unmentioned. It was like opening a present.

I love my dark chocolate and had to stop here while visiting. The chocolate is indeed divine and pricy but if you’re a chocolate connoisseur then it’s worth it. Free samples are provided. It’s a small shop with little in stock up front.

A new favorite place for dark, pure, complex and flavorful chocolate. The bars are fantastic and the truffles are the best I’ve had in the U.S. You can sample the many flavors to find the ones you can’t live without (I don’t think I can live without the fruity Ecuadoran chocolate but I only bought two bars and will have to work on a survival strategy).
How amazing that I live in a place with such a variety of fine chocolate. This is definitely a place to visit if you love good, real chocolate.

With backgrounds in pastry and cooking, the chocolatiers running Pitch Dark chocolate really have fine tuned the art of the chocolate bar.
Pitch Dark has been open for a year over in the Rose City neighborhood just past German food, coffee shops, a bicycle shop and Chinese restaurant. I’ve passed by here on many occasions but just never had the chance to go in. Direct trade cocoa beans from Madagascar, Nicaragua and Ecuador and each bar has its own special characteristics. The flavors range from spicy to fruity to nutty and all are surprisingly mild for the mostly bittersweet chocolate.
I had a nice conversation with the woman running the place today about cooking and how it relates to chocolate making and her pastry background and how it relates and just talking about the different samples that she was offering me and what I was tasting. They carry drinking chocolate as well as truffles and other candy that they make in house and they use Jacobsen sea salt liberally.
This is a really nice little artisanal shop that people should venture into and I’m sure all of these chocolates pair well with red wine and some really nice cheeses. The chocolate bars range in price from 7 to 10 dollars.
If you are a chocoholic, like myself, then this is a really good experience and some really really good chocolate. Enjoy.

Great chocolatier! It’s small but it has everything you need. They walk you through the different cacao percentages and flavors and let you sample from each set. The girl working was super helpful and friendly! And I was surprised by how reasonable the prices are for such terrific products. Makes a great gift!

Wonderful Bean to Bar artisan local craft chocolate right here in Portland, Oregon. This local, small business has single varietals and maintains direct trade relationships with their cacao bean farmers in places like Nicaragua, Fiji, Ecuador, Madagascar etc. They have delicious dark chocolate bars, cacao nibs, dark drinking chocolate, chocolate gifts, and delicious dark chocolate truffles with sea salt and also caramels — fantastic.
The owner and his wife were making the chocolate and telling me the process right in front of me. I loved every minute of spending time with them. if you enjoy dark chocolate then this is the place in Portland to go visit (and try samples!). I have personally tried many different dark chocolate companies (Mast Brothers, Dandelion Chocolate, Woodblock Chocolate, Mana Chocolate, Askinosie) and out of them all Pitch Dark comes in 1^st place as my favorite craft chocolate bar. My favorites out of their 12 bars: you must try Nicalizo, Jacobsen Pinot, Madagascar, Rugoso and Chuno. Mmm yum.

I first learned of Pitch Dark through an e-​mail list I belong to through Gargiste out of Seattle. Reading the verbose descriptions provided about the chocolate, I couldn’t deny myself the opportunity to try it. I don’t think words could ever fully describe how good this chocolate actually tastes.
When we were planning our anniversary trip to the Pac NW, Portland popped up on my radar as a possible stopover for a few reasons. Pitch Dark was one of them.
We made our way around PDX on a typical drizzly day and eventually wound up here. The holidays were a busy time for them, so the selection was limited, but we also got to try some delicious truffles. Those were coming home with us too.
It’s by no means cheap chocolate in price. Or in taste. But the money spent is well worth it.

I got some of this chocolate as a secret santa/​channukah gift through work, and I am utterly amazed! I think its some of the best single source, dark chocolate I have ever had. I just tried the Madagascar 73% cacao. I can not wait to visit your establishment and tour!

Found this place by accident as it wasn’t on our scheduled stops. We were eating our pastries from the Bakeshop next door and saw this place. Came back after they opened and got some chocolates (the mix box) and a bar. Seriously the best chocolate covered caramel I have ever had.

Undeniably excellent.
This might just be Portland’s finest chocolate.
So many other gourmet chocolates are all cover, no book. Fancy packaging and lofty verbage with an exorbitant price-​tag to match.
But, Pitch Dark Chocolate is for real.

I don’t know if I’ve ever before tasted so much flavor distinction. I’m looking at the ingredients of this Madagascar Bar 73% dark, and it reads only «Cacao, Sugar» and this is blowing my mind.
Try it for yourself! It doesn’t get any more authentic than this.
