Specialties

We serve house made soups, pesto, hummus, tapenade. Most everything comes vegan or vegetarian. Us meat lovers have an assortment of meats and cheeses to add to any sandwich. We also have gluten free bread.

History

Established in 2012.

I have lived in the neighborhood for 7 years. We were in desperate need of a nice coffee shop. I heard the space was up for sale, and I decided to take the plunge!

I worked for Coffee People for 12 years. It was the most fun I’ve ever had at a job! I was really excited to be able to try it for myself, and NOT have to wear a polo shirt!

We love this place. It’s the best coffee in the hood. The folks working here are so friendly. They remembered me and my family and what we usually order right away. It’s the «Cheers» of FoPo.

I love this place! I am not a big coffee drinker but once about every two weeks I come in to grab my coffee fix and boy is it good. I have tried a few things on their menu and am never disappointed. My favorite is their Caramel Latte with house made caramel. Yummm! THey make the caramel in house and they use heavy whipping cream. MMM I just want a jar of that stuff!
Their sandwiches are great, breakfast sandwich is yummy, and their paninis are yummy too. I really like the one with Olive Tapenade. If you’re sick and feeling like you want some soup well stop by because they have different soups on the daily (I am pretty sure, they do change quite regularly) and they are so good!

The place is a little cold for me, so the one day I studied there I was freeeeezing. But enjoyed the ambiance nonetheless! But they have free wifi! Just ask for the password!

First impression: welcoming, cozy and open. I love coming in and getting a warm cuppa and a bagel and being able to read without interruption. If you sit at the bar at the window, you’ll be able to people watch. The gals behind the counter are always very friendly and helpful. The music always changes, which is good and its always a different genre. And maybe I have yet to get out to other shops to enjoy variety, but so far, being new in town I really do love the Stumptown brew they serve.

Great neighborhood café and eatery with outstanding coffee, quick wifi, delicious pastries and other regular food options. For a small corner café and eatery it feels very big and spacious inside. The owner and baristas provide very friendly advice and the atmosphere is very welcoming and not too noisy like some cafes can be. Great for kids of any age and everyone feels comfortable.

Meh. The latte I got had no foam and a stale coffee flavor. Interior of the place is okay, but kind of made me uncomfortable — definitely not a warm vibe, more cluttered warehouse.

VEGAN FRIENDLY… The staff is friendly and the service is great. We find healthy choices readily available and quite affordable. I love the garlic hummus! The coffee (regular old coffee) is excellent but refills cost. I haven’t tried there other coffee drinks but they seem reasonably priced. The dining room is pretty standard for a breakfast café.
My reason for less than five stars… for a café… is that there were a few gnats in the dining area (fresh fruit?). Also, a parent was letting her kid run around the eating area making a bunch of noise. Very annoying but not really Piepers fault…
I will definitely continue eating/​drinking here but won’t be my first choice if I’m looking for something quiet.
I’d like to state again… The staff is very friendly and the food is excellent.

Super friendly staff and the pumpkin spice latte was amazing. Made from scratch so it does not have the syrup flavoring that you find in places like starbucks. The cheddar bagel with cream cheese was delicious. It is my new go-​to coffee shop when I visit my sister in Portland!

I really liked the atmosphere, and the panini special I had was perfect for breakfast-​hearty, hot, and filling, without being too big. They have card games and books to read, and good music choice. Everyone there seemed happy to help and in a good mood. Unfortunately, the lattes were burnt pretty badly, but I know coffee quality changes depending on who’s making it. I’ll be trying it again.

Pieper is such a great coffee shop to have in the neighborhood. Super friendly staff, strong coffee (and only $ 1 to add a double shot), and a pretty solid food menu, including several vegan options. My only minor complaint is the 50 cents up charge for alternative milks. Overall, though, this place is awesome.

The people who work here are really nice. The drinks are hit and miss depending on who makes them. The ambience is okay, but seat cushions are torn and it’s not exactly a cozy place. I used to come in here to work all the time, but one of the women working behind the counter is way too talkative and crazy annoying so I’ve stopped coming in. I know that seems silly, but I got tired of hearing endless conversation (always about herself) that made it too hard to concentrate or relax. Don’t expect to get reasonably priced food, either. I once watched a man order a sandwich and storm out when he was told it would be $ 9! A simple sandwich!

Stumptown coffee, delicious panini’s and a sweet and fun staff make this my favorite local coffee spot in all of Portland. We go frequently enough they now know us by name and have our regular order memorized. Nothing is better than not having to articulate before the first morning coffee!

So when you search gluten free breakfast this shows up. Technically they do offer gluten free bread for a little extra. No gf bagels though… I guess you could get a panini? Not a terrible option cut not for economical. I think they charge $ 2 extra. I would prefer gluten free bagel option. I don’t really want to spend almost $ 10 on a breakfast «sandwich».
Coffee was great. Service with a smile. Wish they had some fruit cups? Gf oatmeal? Gf bagels. Gf breakfast frittata muffins. All of those would hold up pretty well…
Stumptown coffee!!! Nice atmosphere on the inside. Fast service. I would go back for the coffee:)
Ps-​they do have some pre-​packaged gf cookies. As most people know gf goods, pre-​packaged dries out SO fast not really with it…

Great coffee shop. My wife and I spent the day working from one of their booths so we had the opportunity to experience quite a bit in one visit. I can describe each item as «outstanding.» That includes paninis, soup, coffee, service, prices, and wireless (a reliable 20 down/​8 up).
We’ll be adding Pieper to our list of regular shops to frequent.

Pieper Café is absolutely adorable inside (white and black tiles, cute tables) and it has the most delightful tea (like the sassafras tea that tastes like root beer!), as well as espresso drinks, sandwiches, delicious-​looking baked goods, and gluten-​free cookies. Service is super friendly! It’s an order-​at-​the-​counter kind of place.
But, my favorite part of Pieper Café is their attention to the community.
Their art display right now is art by three year olds, each with her/​his own bio and description of the art. Some pieces are already sold. It’s charming and heartfelt all at once, and you have to love a place that values the youngest members of our community and supports their self-​esteem!

Oh gosh, I wish I lived closer! The ladies are nice, the cold coffee is strong, the food is outstanding, and the space is both cute and comfortable. They should teach a class on how to get coffee shops right, because this place is great!
