Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic

Can I give zero stars? This place is outrageous. We’ve been taking our dog here for 3 years and had to make the switch. I work in a customer service driven industry… And when someone tries to build a relationship with you and your business, please do not continually try to rip off and cheat your customer and their furry loves. We’re not all naïve.
Our dog got her fourth ear infection, which was apparent as we’ve been battling it FOREVER, and instead of allowing us to refill the prescription, they demanded we come in for an exam and charged us an exorbitant amount just to tell us we needed the same prescription they’d been giving us, repeatedly. Mind you, they demanded we come in for a visit after we’d had a wellness check just a couple months before!!!
There are so many more instances involving them that’s not even worth curdling my blood over. Moral of story, there are many more reasonably priced, CARING vet clinics out there.

Such kind and helpful people who truly understand how much our fur family means to us. From the front desk to the vet techs to the vet, everyone is cheery and very knowledgeable. You can tell they all love what they do and where they work. My very scared min pin was no problem for them. Like others have said, don’t let the simple exterior fool you, it’s clean and warm inside.

Took my bunny to this clinic for a check-​up. The staff was really friendly and accomodating.
DeRemer thoroughly checked the bunny’s health. He was very gentle and it was obvious that he knew a lot about rabbits. He really took the time to answer all our questions.
Although it doesn’t look like much from outside, the facility is clean and seems well-​equipped.

After my second visit with them, I found Dr. DeRemer and his staff so nice and helpful that I switched over from my previous vet clinic of 11 years today. Dr. DeRemer is very kind and gentle and really takes his time with my dog, trying to ease her anxiety and make it a positive experience. I can tell he really loves and cares for animals in his demeanor and manner in handling them, talking low and quietly to them. The staff is great and they were able to fit me in for a same day appt. before the weekend for an ear issue. They made sure I understood the directions clearly and also what to do if the condition worsened over the weekend.
The facility is very, very clean and homey-​feeling. It is conveniently located on Interstate Ave. by the MAX line and while there is no parking lot, neighborhood parking was easy.

I had scheduled an appointment for my dog as he had an eye infection. Once I found parking around the corner, as they have no parking lot and poor signage, I went into their tiny lobby area to check in. My older dog is not terribly social so since the area is so small, we had to find the furthest corner. This room is about 9 ft x 5 deep so, if another dog comes in with kennel cough or wants to sniff him out there’s really no place to go hide to avoid potential transfer of that dog’s illness. Anyway we waited 20 minutes before being escorted to a really tiny practice room… red flag 1. My dog was panting as he had been given plenty of time to get really nervous and the vet tech left us saying he would bring us back some water, which never happened… there’s flag 2.
We sat there for another 25 minutes before the Vet, who I’ve never seen before came in. Nobody bothered to let me know that my vet was gone or no longer practicing there when I scheduled… red flag 3! At that point I had been there for a long time and had to be somewhere in45 minutes. He examined the eyes, saw that it was the same condition that it had the past and went to put two drops of eye stain in to ensure no eye scratch. The two drops of eye stain cost me $ 25, REALLY?! Yet another flag for me! When I went to the front desk the woman proceeded to explain a protocol about bland food and cottage cheese that made no sense because it had nothing to do with my dogs eyes. Oops! Wrong protocol! These guys should open a Flag store! I walked away $ 155 poorer as they also didn’t share that they had raised their exam fee when I called to schedule. When I got home, I looked his meds online. The 3.5gram ointment that Peninsula charged me $ 65 for was available for $ 32 retail! What!?! Still seeing red-​just like my poor dog! Need I say more? The moral is that this place has gone downhill while there pricing has zoomed up into the stratosphere. Please message me if you find a good vet with some integrity!

We moved from DC about two years ago and were in search of a vet in our neighborhood. This place isn’t quite as fancy as the vet we went to in DC, but I think it is reflected in the prices. The staff are all very kind and gentle, especially Dr. DeRemer.

They took good care of our yellow lab, from routine visits to emergency stitches. They were very good about calling to check in on him after visits, even when he needed to go to a different vet that was closer in an emergency. Highly recommend!

Thanks for the efforts and Sunday after hours visit, my bunnys life is saved! I brought her in on a Saturday, and she was very ill. Had Dr. D not intervened, she wouldn’t have survived.

Well, after 7 years my last experience will be my last. Seems like a lot of turn over and a new receptionist that, well… unfortunate. My original dr. Deremer I havent seen quite the last few visits so as he was never in the office ~ Different vets started rolling in and out. Lots have changed — hope its for the good. We had help there, but the moral now is way shotty and its best to trust instincts. Maybe it is because they are so busy. Good luck

After not being happy with two other vets since I moved to Portland, I tried this place based on the Unilocal reviews. And all the praises were true — they are friendly with very reasonable prices. I’ve been taking my cat for almost 5 years now.
Update: I had to put my beloved cat to rest and I took him in for the process. The vet was a new member so he had never met my cat before. He even cried too as my best friend departed this life.
They sent me card signed by the whole staff with a quote that nailed the relationship between a human and their furry companion.

I love this vet. They are so patient with my rescued, special needs bully-​mix, who is often very fearful at the vet. But now, she loves the folks here. Both vets are calm and great with her, and ithey even have a door outside where you can access the exam room without having to bring your dog through the main waiting area if your dog is dog-​fearful to dog-​aggressive. But my dog loves the waiting room now, always gets a treat. Lots of treats. Also, one time our cat was very sick with unknown illness. They took him in at 7AM before they were really open and tirelessly worked on him until they found a 4 inch long large blade of grass that he had somehow snorted into his nasal cavity. I cant recommend them highly enough… great, honest, reasonably priced clinic.

I have been taking my dogs here for about a year now and will continue for years to come. As a new pet owner they have been wonderful guiding me through pet health care. They are super sweet to our pups, easy on the wallet, and take all manner of silly questions by phone. They really go out of their way in terms of customer service. Also Dr, DeRemer and Kellee are the best.

This clinic is amazing! I have lived in the community for 20 years and went to another clinic for awhile, but seemed to get harder to get in and so I discovered Kelly at Peninsula. They have been there for all of our pets and been so supportive. I called in tears at closing and she did not hesitate to tell me to come in. All of the techs are amazing and I love them!

It started out so well…
We’ve been going to Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic for around 4 years now. They’ve provided great care to us through one Boxer and a very hard time when we had to put her down. They’ve also been our vet for our American Eskimo & our newest Boxer. We’ve been generally happy. Good hours, friendly people, no major drawbacks. Until…
We were out of town on vacation and were boarding our two dogs at a local daycare when one of them was attacked by another dog. Several puncture wounds to the neck, back, and ears (requiring several sutures and a drain). Needless to say, lots of blood. The owner of the doggy daycare rushed our dog to Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic since they are our vet of record. Peninsula TURNED HER AWAY. Bleeding dog in the back seat of her car and they turned her away. Why? Because they wouldn’t treat our dog without our consent… which they couldn’t obtain since we were out of cell phone range. Bear in mind that our daycare provider has our written consent on record, but that wasn’t good enough for the vet.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand the need to have policies in place to protect the vet both legally and financially. But when an dog that you’ve seen and treated on numerous routine occasions shows up with blood all over him and you turn the caregiver away because that’s what the policy says, I think it just demonstrates a lack of compassion and loyalty… two things that a vet should have in spades.
I’d also note that we had previously been very loyal clients. Always followed the vet’s advice, always paid at time of service, always recommended them to other pet owners. This experience was truly disappointing. Further adding insult to injury (pun intended), another local clinic in St. Johns whom we had never seen before agreed to take in our injured dog and provide care. That’s the sort of vet I want. We’ll be heading to the St. Johns Companion Pet Clinic from now on.

They are all so good with the pets and a big kudo to Doc Kittams for making sure my pup was all taken care of and for providing the kennel with my dogs shot records. Love this place

I first stumbled upon Peninsula Dog and Cat over 10 years ago when I got my very first cat and needed to have him fixed on the cheap. I had already been to two different veterinarians who were overpriced for all the wrong reasons (frills), and I was worried that I might have to wait to neuter my cat because I couldn’t afford it. After a friend’s recommendation, Peninsula D&C came to the rescue as a super affordable, caring, and flexible vet that I immediately felt at home with.
If you are an owner of a dog or cat (they don’t do more ‘exotic’ animals– which may be why they offer such great prices) Peninsula Dog and Cat is a great place to go for affordable, no-​frills, quality pet care. I have taken at least 6 pets here over the last 8 years and I have never had a bad experience. They are not fancy, they are not going to overly pamper you or your pets, but they will provide informed, caring, quality healthcare for your cat and dog companions at a reasonable price.
I don’t want to make Peninsula come across as a budget vet because they are not. They are just not concerned with the frills that make other vets much more expensive, like some fancy waiting room. Dr. DeReamer and his entire team (from the thoughtful receptionists to the adorable office cat ‘Wendy’) are professional and always concerned about the animals first. They remember my animals by name (even though I have had a lot over the years), they always do follow-​up calls to assure that their treatments have been a success. As an animal lover on a budget who is not willing to settle for a second-​rate veterinarian, I am so happy I have found Peninsula Dog and Cat.

Having had absolutely no experience with veterinarians and being in crisis with our beloved house bunny this was uncharted territory. It was early morning and the first vet we called was short a bunny specialist. She kindly referred us to Peninsula Dog and Cat Clinic and even though they do not have the word «Bunny» in their clinic name, they do indeed have a bunny specialist. My 18 year old daughter had to go by herself with her very sick bunny and hear the bad news and make the” decision”. She called me crying and said the nurse and doctor were there with her and that she would be alright. I have never met this team, but I am so grateful for their concern for our bunny and my daughter. She made it home and told me how kind everyone was and that they understood two most important things: 1. No «one» should be in pain and 2. No «one» should be alone when they die. Thaddeus, our beloved bunny was neither. Then two days later a beautiful personalized sympathy card arrived by mail to her. «Mom, if we ever get another bunny, I am going to back there.» What more could I ask for?
Death is a milestone experience for every young person. Thank you to Peninsula for helping hers be a little easier.

These guys are pretty cool. I’ve been here twice before, and I’ve been to two other places in N Portland — this one is far superior. It’s comfortable — their waiting room cats make me ever so happy (one — boogie? only shows up for early am appts and she is the biggest and coziest love in the world!).
Both doctors are kind and professional. I ask specifically for prices (how much would tests cost, how much is this shot vs this one) and they happily accommodate me and never make me feel bad because I’m not paying the extra $ 100 for testing but will wait and see how the medication works. After all, I love my cats — but I like to eat too — as do my cats.
Every receptionist/​front desk person I’ve come across here has been lovely (although I admit that the smell of perfume was a bit overwhelming today). It isn’t cheap — but tell me where to find that. I hear that you can buy and administer a lot of stuff yourself if you buy it at petsmart (the cortizone shot for flea problems…) and I plan to check that out.
In general — these guys are nice and seem to really like animals. Even my scaredy cat who freaks out when I treat him with flea meds on his neck barely noticed when they gave him his shot.

Reasonable prices, excellent and prompt care. Everyone I’ve talked to and worked with has been excellent. They’re knowledgeable, dependable, and very gentle.

Absolutely outstanding vet!
I have NEVER in 20 years of pet ownership had such a good experience with a vet. They are small and not easy to spot but you feel like you are entering the old fashioned small town docs office. They remember you and your pet by name they are non-​judgmental and don’t pressure instead preferring to listen to the pet and owners needs first. They are priced affordably and have a caring attitude about finding solutions within your budget without compromising your pets health. Both doctors are very friendly with smiles and answers for your questions. They spoke to me not down to me and played with my cats instead of just sticking something up their bums and leaving. I think it was a great experience for my pets and for me… minus the bum thermometer.
They were local to me and I have since moved out of the area but still drive that extra little bit just to make sure my animals are seen by them. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
