Legacy Emanuel Medical Center

I came into the emergency department today. The nurse that called me back to my room called another patient to come along with us as she escorted us together to our rooms. This was completely unprofessional. Then she proceeded to interrogate me as if I am inconveniencing her by coming to the emergency room for my health condition. She neglected to give me a call button to call for help. She didn’t even give me a pillow.

This is the absolute worst Hospital have ever been to. The security there are a bunch of punk @ss’s. My cousin was hospitalized and when I went in to check up on him to see if he would need a ride home or if he was staying there. And I mind you I was sitting in the emergency room entrance, just sitting down minding my own business being quiet waiting to see whether or not I needed to either take my cousin home, to another Hospital, because of the way the security there was physically man-​handling him while he was in the midst of just about having a seizure from his Crohn’s disease. While I was sitting there I was approached by this rather large security officer who proceeds to tell me I can not sit in the waiting room for my cousin and that I would have to leave. I looked at him and just stated that I was just making sure my cousin doesn’t get stranded down there and that I had no problem leaving once I knew what was going on with my family/​He then proceeds to get on his radio and then there was five security there. I looked at him again and asked him what I had done wrong and started to walk out when the original security officer actually put his hands on me and pushed me back in the direction of door which I was already heading to. After that I keep in contact with my cousin who two days later was forced out of the place that was treating him, by force and is home now with black and blue marks all over his body. The security there is nothing but a bunch of guys that have to feel better about themselves by beating up people that are sick and less then 100 pounds, and cant even walk under their own power. Wow now that’s a bunch of people that should just get sued, or just taken out back and taught some manners

I’m grateful that hospitals and medical care exist. But my PCP, boss and RN partner all directed me to present myself to the ED for treatment. I’ve been here 6 hours waiting and it’s become obvious that they lumped me in with the malingerers as literally everyone has been called back except myself and a couple of for reals crazy ladies. I’ve got UTI like symptoms that 2 different MDs have been trying to treat for months with antibiotics that aren’t working; stabbing abdominal pain, flank pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, hot and cold flashes and a weird floaty head. My MD friend is telling me to stick it out and wait to be seen. However… I’m beginning to think my issues might not mean anything and I’d be better off sucking it up and going home.
UPDATE: I finally gave up after watching the waiting room fill and empty three times… while I continued to wait. Was told later «you shouldn’t have gone to a level 1 trauma center and expected to be treated for your problem». Sure wish there had been a sign somewhere or triage had told me Emmanuel isn’t the place to go for things if you don’t have a broken leg or chest pain.

It’s a hospital, the «customers» are usually having a bad day, and the providers are doing their best, in a career they wouldn’t be in if they didn’t care. Five stars cause they work hard in a stressful job to help everyone who comes in.

My husband had a heart attack in 2012 while uninsured and unemployed and was in the hospital for 3 – 4 days. We are not wealthy people and have tried to get a little break off of the hospital bill, as research shows that on average, insurance companies are billed 40% less than an uninsured patient. After refusing to budge off of a $ 35,000 hospital bill, Legacy would accept no less than $ 300 monthly after we sold my husband’s car and put $ 6,000 down. Due to some trying financial times, we missed 3 months of payments (all the while we were in contact and offered $ 50 – 100 a month until we could pay the full amount). We were turned over to their collections agency with no warning. Long story short, we tried to refinance our home, cashed out our son’s college account, and have paid a grand total of $ 25,000 in the past 2 months. $ 25,000! Even after paying that, the collections agency has called every day, sent notices in the mail with labeling on the envelope clearly stating they are a collections agency (which is illegal), and have even tried to add on outrageous interest fees with no written or official notice as to how this is calculated. We contacted the hospital again and were told we owe a final $ 4,000. My husband took out cash on his credit card and went to pay yesterday and was told, no, it is now $ 7,000! If you are not critically ill and have time to strongly consider your options for hospitalization and medical care, do yourself a favor and DO NOT COME HERE, especially if you are a middle class, hard working individual. I’ll scream it from the rooftops… DO NOT COME HERE!!!

Good god. I have never had such a belittling and incompetent nurse as I did in triage. Inaccurate medical information was given to me by her and to the rest of the staff, resulting in a very quick admission to the hospital once I was seen by the Physician Assistant. Keep in mind, I was not the first patient that hour to be inadequately triaged by her.
However, aside from that, the PAs and attending physicians are amazing. The inpatient nurses and respiratory therapists are fantastic. If you can get past the belittling bitch in triage who scoffs at you for not drinking alcohol, calls you and the paramedics liars, and is horrifically unprofessional, you should have a great stay.

I work there, I have been a patient there, I would recommend ANYONE to go there if needed. The staff is amazing and they practice based on the most up to date info and research.

More often than not, the people working here are friendly. They are as fast as possible. Most importantly, neither myself nor anyone I know has died of some flesh eating virus after visiting (they keep it clean). They are not patient with people that insist on smoking, subsequently making other sick people wait longer to get into a room. Feel better soon ailing Unilocalers!

Billing department has ruined our experience with Legacy. My wife and I had our son at legacy. And our visit was great, well other than we had to go elsewhere for our child’s circ, they claimed they only had doc and he was all booked.
Back to the real issue, the billing has been horrible. We have dual insurance and almost every bill has been incorrectly billed. They haven’t been sending the EOB and half the time they get the secondary insurance address wrong. We have called and told them the issue, but it still happens. This has been a nightmare to manage and I can’t recommend Legacy because this.

I first went to this ER in the late afternoon for a severe asthma attack. The two triage nurses seemed to be more interested in deciphering one of my current meds and making fun of Zoomcare than they were in helping me be able to breathe. When I mentioned my nervousness about Prednisone, they laughed and told me I would definitely be going on it. After this interview, I waited an hour, then gave up and left.
I went back in the middle of the night, and my experience was completely different. Everyone was great, and worked quickly to get me breathing again. They explained everything they were going to do, and the X-​Ray tech got me a warmed blanket when she saw I was freezing.
The nurses were kind and helpful; they even called in someone to help me find a PCP when I said I was having trouble finding a good one, and they told me about the financial aid program when I said I wasn’t sure how I was going to pay for what my insurance didn’t cover. I would definitely go back here, but I would try to wait for the night crew if I could.

Stay away. I brought my little sister here for a medical emergency. From the time that we checked in, the lady at the front desk was extremely rude and didn’t seem to want to help us at all. If my sister wasn’t in so much pain I would’ve taken her somewhere else, but this was the closet emergency location. Getting checked into triage went by pretty fast, but getting called to the back was the longest wait ever.
Go elsewhere!

So this place if the average hospital. The nurses are cute and find a vein. Ive been here a few times but this was the most serious injury. I was hit by an suv on my bike, the driver was cool and so were the peramedics. Did some serious damage upon myself.
So heres the need to know:
I got there about about 3pm and i went to the trauma center. They did not tell me what is going on with me until the doctor got the xray and ct scan. The doctor seemed to be on xanax as he forgot questions i asked or totally ignored me.
The staff conversation-​wise are cool, but they forget too much. I must of asked for water 5 times and had to flirt with the nurse to actually get my water.
The nurses try to be gentle but hey arent.
The staff are poor on communication with one another, you will find yourself repeating alot.
So the emts gave me fentnyl IV, THANK U! Then inside i got 4mg of morphine IV, after that toradol IV and i was doing nothing but suffering. I refused to act like a drug seeker so i sucked it up. The dr was ok, he gave vicoden to go home with and a small script for
So yeah, average hospital. They lie to you, dont tell you whats going on, dont tell the nurses whatsup, and the nurses and emts are always cool.

The birth center at Emmanuel is great. All the staff have been very kind and a special thanks to midwife Chris and Julie and team.

And yet again, it proves to the worst place ever. After sitting there for 6 hours complainging about my foot hurting, they finaly took me to the x ray roorm. That’s after they turned the call botton off. So after 6 hours I was finally with a broken foot. Thanks alot you dicks. After that I, asked for my discharge paperwork, since Ibuprofen was the best they could offer me.
No dischareg papers, go figure. I was told by the receptionist that I called after realilizing I wasnt cared for and had no paperwork to show for it, that if I returned and signed some additional paperwork for dischararge they would then release the paperwork to me. That was also a lie. You must wait untl M-​F to get this paperwok. Thank your lucky stars that you have read this and will never go there, even if your life depends on it.
I have a 10 am appointment with my regual doctor. How am I supposed make my doctor’s appointment on a lame foot and get my discharge paperwork at the same time? The people there care NOTHING about you GO SOMEWERE ELSE, best place I ever found woud keiser per. BUT STAY AWAY from Legacy Emanul. EVERYONE you tell that you went there does that «eeeeeeww» noise. Like «ewwwww, you went there… big mistake.»

Nice staff, good doctors… but another business place. After my daughter have a severe ER, and paid $ 26,000 in medical bills, and despite rigorous monthly payments… they send us to collections for $ 300…Way to go Legacy!!! You are not my legacy, but a non-​caring business with people’s health !!!
Go somewhere else if you can… or stay there if money is not an issue for you

This hospital rocks! I have used Legacy Emanuel many times for my clients and a few times for emergencies with my children. Their staff has always been attentive and caring. I am a midwife and we transport our clients who become high risk or need a cesarean. Our clients are always cared for respectfully and competently. Thank you, Emanuel!

Had a great admit, great nurse (very funny) and the procedure went as planned. The only thing is that my surgery was scheduled for 1:30 and they didnt start until 3:30. Oh well. i’m alive so that is all that matters.

My friend was brought in on an ambulance over the weekend because she was drugged at the club. They didn’t do a drug test on her and treated her like she was just an overlly drunk kid. I didn’t find very many of the doctors/​nurses there to be respectful in a very scary situation.
My frienda and I are both college education women and weren’t dressed in «club-​slut-​type» attire. However, whenever I’d ask a question I’d get a quick, snarky response. And as soon as she regained conciousness (she was unconcious and would only respond to pain for 4 – 5 hours), they pushed her out the door. And didn’t really explain what happened or what they did to treat her.
I’ve worked in ERs in the past and how they treated us was not right and I would not go to that hospital again if I had a choice.

Basing a review of an urban ER on how many people are ahead of you in queue is like reviewing Bellagio based on whether you won at craps. Really, you should have just crashed/​cut yourself/​got ebola on a different day. Or live in a country where citizens getting their primary care in the ER doesn’t pass for a heath care «system».
That said, I’m pretty sure I’m able to give Emanuel’s ER 4 stars in part because there was nobody waiting at the time Ms. A brought me and my profusely bleeding head in the door (I recommend 1 AM on a Wednesday, FWIW). The folks at reception were oh so receptive and I was whisked to an exam room so the «plastics» resident could get a shot at reattaching the top of my ear.
Let me backtrack slightly: when I roused my poor spouse with a post-​midnight call to tell her I’d crashed my bike on the f**king streetcar tracks coming back from beers with friends, she was not what you’d call pleased. But she got the car and came to scoop my bleeding self off the mean streets of the Pearl, put the bike on the roof rack and proceeded to drive me right past the ER at Good Sam and over the bridge to Emanuel. Why? Because she’s a nurse practitioner and she knows Emanuel has a trauma center with plastics on call — and that was how my ear and head were going to get reacquainted. («Plastics» is med slang for OMFS, or oral and maxillofacial surgery. No actual plastic was involved, although I’m now allowed to say, «I’ve had some work done.»)
While I was awaiting treatment, the mustachioed nurse joked that he was going to call me Holyfield and that if the stitches didn’t take I could «just gauge it.» Hipster in scrubs. Excellent. The NP on duty turned out to have been mentored by Ms. A and the resident was a super nice guy on rotation from Seattle, who did a bang-​up job fixing my bang-​up.
It’s only the second time I’ve been an ER patient (the first also being for face planting from my bike — in 7^th grade, no beer involved) and I hope this is the only opportunity I have to review one as a patient. My only regret, aside from needing to go there at all, is that I didn’t bring them my bashed up and bloodied helmet so I could get a new one for free. Maybe one with ear guards this time.

The members of my family don’t visit the hospital when they are short of breath. They visit the hospital after they’ve had 40 shots of Fireball Whiskey and decide to jump off of 40 foot bridges. They visit the hospital after a dump truck mangles their tiny Ford to pieces and shatters their bones. After their kid splits his face open with a porcelain fish…
This is why, when I got the call that the husband was in the ER, I knew it had to be something serious. Luckily no booze was involved in the making of this accident. What was involved was a pretty gnarly bike wreck that accounted for the ripping off of many fleshy areas of his body and some mega bonks to the grossly cracked helmet he was wearing
There is this total judgy side of me that tends to trust people with tattoos more than the un-​tattooed. So when the tattooed doctor walked in to introduce himself, I knew the husband was in good hands. Everyone from the front desk receptionist to the quirky nurse, were extremely laid back, funny and eager to help where they could. Another great thing worth mentioning is that the husband was added to their «saved by the helmet» list. They have a program where if your helmet saves your life, they give you a new one, take a photo of your mangled ass and showcase the importance of wearing a helmet in future «share the road classes.» The director Mike, was sweet and gleaming with pride as he presented the husband with a new helmet.
After two speedy hours of x rays, bandages, the good drugs and a new helmet, my crippled beau and I were out the door. I typically don’t look forward to visits to the hospital, but next time one of us decides to pull another stunt gone wrong, I know we will be well taken care of in the hands of Emmanuel.
