Inn at Marquam Hill

This Inn is just as described. Comfortable, clean, and quiet. I had a good size room upstairs with the bathroom across the hall surprising very private. Super close walk to OHSU. The breakfast quiche they served in the morning was great. The manager was wonderful and helped me with last minute accommodations and offered great advice.

I stayed the night ¹⁰⁄₂₅ while visiting OHSU for an interview. Since the bed and breakfast (B&B) was cheaper than any hotwire rate I could find downtown, I figured I would go ahead and book it. I ended up paying about $ 111 total for one night in a king sized bed. Here’s a breakdown:
Pros:
— Free wireless internet.
— Limited free parking with permit (more below)
— The couches in the living room were comfortable
Cons:
— The proprietor didn’t want to give me a parking pass. This is a residential neighborhood with two hour parking enforced until 5:00pm unless you have a parking pass. I had parked at 2:30 and called her around 4:00 requesting that I could get a parking pass, as I didn’t want to get a parking ticket. She said that I probably wouldn’t need it and asked if I would be leaving my car there the next day. It took a lot of convincing, but I finally got the permit.
— No one greets you at the door: you walk up to a house with instructions to come in. Your name is on an envelope lying on the table and then you follow the instructions inside the envelope. I’ve never been to a bed and breakfast before, but this seemed strange to me.
— all the doors were unlocked — you needed to request a key to lock your own door
— you share a bathroom. Think big house and you fight your siblings for who gets to pee first when you wake up in the morning.
— the website says they offer complimentary shuttle service to OHSU if you ask in advance and if the proprietor is available. I asked the day before my interview and she said that I should just walk there and that the shuttle is really only for families who have a family member in the hospital on campus. Seems like false advertising to me. If they don’t want to give me a ride, say so — don’t just make random things up. I left for my interview at 7am. The residential road I walked down had *very little* lighting. Most of the road on the way to campus didn’t have a sidewalk, so I had to walk on the street. I would have felt much more comfortable if I could have had a ride to campus.
— I came back around 10:15pm the night before my interview and my room was locked. Remember, I didn’t get a key, so it shouldn’t be locked. I called the proprietor’s phone number twice and left a message. I also knocked on the proprietor’s door several times. I was a little panicked because I thought I’d have to sleep on the couch in the living room that night. Finally, on the third knock, the proprietor woke up and unlocked the door for me. It was great. I got to feel super guilty for waking an old lady up past her bed time, just because I was never given a key to my room.
— the pillows on my bed were all very hard. They were the very rigid foam style. This was disappointing for me because I’m a pillow folder and it just wasn’t possible. I mentioned this to the proprietor and she said that the King beds don’t have feather pillows because it’s hard to find king sized feather pillows. I know you can buy them at Costco or
, just to name a couple of very convenient places.

— I didn’t get to try the made-​to-​order breakfast. I had to leave for my interview when breakfast started. You do have the option to request an earlier breakfast, as per the website. However, after requesting a ride to campus and being denied, I have a feeling the early breakfast request would have similarly been denied.
Overall, I had a very negative and disappointing experience here. Chances are, I will be very wary of going to another bed and breakfast. I should have just taken a regular hotel. I would have had a key to my room, privacy, and my own bathroom.

What a wonderful, comfortable, homey place! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
It is also very convenient for anyone connected with OHSU. The hospital and university is at the top of a crazy steep hill, with only a small neighborhood around it. It’s so steep that many of the students and faculty ride a gondola, like on a ski mountain, to get to work. Parking is difficult or impossible. All of that makes the Inn at Marquam Hill an ideal place to stay for anyone visiting OHSU.
At breakfast, it was a fascinating and eclectic group of visitors – a cancer patient who was spending 3 months in the vicinity of OHSU following a stem cell transplant, along with her mother for support; a Mexican woman visiting OHSU for retinal surgery, along with a number of her family members (including a little girl who saw snow for the first time and ran outside to build a snowman); an Australian surgeon spending a week at the hospital to learn advanced techniques in esophageal surgery; a young American woman who lives in China and was visiting her mother in the hospital; a pharmacy student doing a rotation at OHSU. We were visiting our daughter, who is a scientist in the Pediatric Cancer Biology group at OHSU.
The hospital and university is only a few blocks away, within easy walking distance. There is parking at the B&B. The owners make arrangements for people who stay for longer periods of time, renting by the month if requested. Altogether, we very much enjoyed our stay.

This was a wonderful and cozy Bed and Breakfast with the friendliest host ever! Not only was breakfast made personally to meet my tastes every morning (ie. blueberry french toast with homemade shredded hash browns and sausage!!!) but it was also truly delicious. The pricing was cheaper than any comparable hotel in the area and extremely convenient to get to OHSU. Although it is in close walking distance, it was raining so the host even offered me a quick ride to the hospital. Very accommodating.
Overall, great experience and I would definitely recommend the B&B to anyone looking for a comfortable and affordable place to stay in Portland.

— The interior décor is nice, quaint, and tasteful, but you can tell it’s a converted house, especially from the outside
Overall: Great B&B experience, especially if you need to be at or near OHSU or downtown. Definitely recommend for a short stay.
