Hillsdale Art Supply Company

Kicking myself for not finding Hillsdale Art Supply Company sooner and when I was in need of new and recycled art supplies. It’s close to home, has a lot of cool stuff and instantly makes you feel creative and inspires you to create. I forgot to ask if they offer space for artists to work there in store, if they might consider having Sale Sundays or a certain day out of the week/​month where their inventory is discounted, if they offer artists to sell their art there on commission, and having gallery nights or hosting a featured artist month. If you happen to be in the area I highly recommend checking out Hillsdale Art Supply Company, a great place for all ages to get inspired.

I had a really great experience at this sweet art supply store! They have great customer service and many cute things to chose from. They also accept art supply donations which is really cool and eco-​friendly! I can’t wait to go back!

I love this place. It’s not big… or overwhelming… or pretentious. It’s quaint, has lots of cool stuff, and the staff are great – especially Ryan.

I stop by for a browse every time I go to the Hillsdale Library, and I always come out with some great find. The store is like a cross between an upscale SCRAP and a small art supply store like MUSE. The inventory is always changing, and it’s fun to do a little treasure hunting through the recycled materials. I’ve found great deals on gently used paints, brushes and pens. Fair prices on new materials too. The women who work there are always friendly and helpful and eager to talk about supplies or projects.

This place is so awesome I don’t want to write a review because I don’t want you to hear about it, because I want to keep it all to myself. Is that truthful enough? I love love love it. I have been there twice in 2 days. And I’ve brought a friend and she agreed! We have been spending so much we have to take a break. This place has everything used art related. If you want old maps, new paint, anything for collage. Bring a kid here or an adult and let them be inspired by all the found objects and make something all there own. This place also has new stuff too. They are very nice people, I’ve met two store clerks/​owners? so far, and they are polite and helpful. What a cool little spot.

This store has become one of my favorite places to shop. I always find some sort of treasure. I stop here before going to another art supply store because you never know what they might have. They have beads, craft supplies, scrap booking, stuff, and paints, oils, canvas fine art paper drawing supplies, stuff for kids, and so much more! The store is a sweet, cute, little place with a friendly relaxed atmosphere. Feel free to ask the owners anything and they will try to find the answer. I am a painter and I mostly use acrylics, but I decided to try liquid acrylics and I found some at Hillsdale Art Supply at a very reasonable price.
One of the owners, Ryan, also can help you set up an Etsy site! She helped my friend Jeannette set up her beautiful Etsy site and Ryan was very helpful and patient through the whole process.
This place is great for the budget minded artist or student!

Why only two stars? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice… two stars.
I found the staff to be helpful at first but if you are the only customer in the store, you should feel like you can ask anything right? It seemed to be social hour on both of my visits.
I thought it would be nice to support local but since this is not very local to me, I could do better at a craftstore or online.
I would have gave it three just for being there and for offering classes (which I never attended) but the atmosphere and lack of care for the customer killed it.

This little store is sweet and cozy. One of the owners, Ryan, is so helpful — she spent an hour with me on the spot helping me out with ideas. I’m so glad I found this shop, and will be back.

What I have to say on *that* review pretty much applies here. This is a cool small art supply store that you SW Portlanders can now come to in order to get good new art supplies and a damn fine deal on used and recycled stuff. Crafters and scrapbookers, DO NOT PASS THIS PLACE UP! There’s more cool small bits, retired crafting supplies, and inspiration than you can shake a hot glue gun at.
They also have craft and art classes, all sorts of encouraging beginner stuff. They’re part of the newer breed of art supply store, the sort that will not only sell you what you need but encourage you to create. They’re just as passionate about that as our other two irreplaceable local gems, I’ve Been Framed and Muse.
The prices on the new stuff is reasonable (Golden acrylics and Gamblin oils for 20% off list, and I found a nice basic Pentalic black diary-​size book for about $ 8.50, very reasonable pricing) and I saw quite a few used oil color tubes and watercolor tubes for not a lot of money.
It’s a little hard to find, but don’t let that discourage you. If you enter from Cap Highway, drive past the Jade Dragon restaurant and hang a ralph. It’s on the balcony overlooking that steep back parking area with a shingle reading ART SUPPLIES. It’s worth the search.

I just found this sweet shop in Hillsdale! The lady working there went out of her way to assist me with my questions and showed me a bunch of really inexpensive recycled items. I got Golden paints for $ 4 or $ 5 each. I was really excited to find such incredible deals. A great place for someone like me who loves to paint and can continue to on a tight budget. Thank you ladies at Hillsdale Art Supply I will be back.

Lovely sweet art space! I’m taking an art class and didn’t want to spend a ton of money on supplies, as I know from past experience it’s easy to do so. I got acrylic paints, palette, brushes, 3 canvases, some pastels, a sketch pad + pencil, and a little tote –all for $ 75. And the owner couldn’t have been more helpful and sweet. I’ll be back to support this small and local business!

Is Hillsdale Portland’s next hip ‘hood? Shhh!
Because of the hills it’s a tall bike free zone and more mom pants than skinny jeans, but it is not LO. There is actually a good argument for it as the next «it» spot. It is a walk to school neighborhood in an academically top K-​12 pod with reasonable housing prices, a handful of good small restaurants, a coop grocery, childrens’ resale, a library, brewpubs, a small WiFi enabled food cart pod, a farmers market Sundays and now an art supply store.
This small art supply store offers supplies and classes. They have some bargain items too, art supplies bought and never or little used. For instance, they had easels at a half to a third the usual new price.
They have a schedule of classes, for adults, and for children who would like to continue working on art while school is out for summer. The initial classes include encaustic, watercolor, drawing, printmaking and mosaic. They have a few adult sip and draw events, which I’m sure paralleled the experiences of many great artists now considered famous.
For their opening they had a great crowd.
A new spot for kids art classes in a small group setting with plenty of individual attention, a place for adult art classes and a small art supply store too!
